7/19 Kester's TNA Impact Wrestling Live Coverage Review: Open Fight Night featuring another Gut Check, Bobby Roode to call out Austin Aries, and the fallout from Aces and Eights' latest assault
Jul 19, 2012 - 07:00 PM

By Ryan Kester

Impact Wrestling on SpikeTV
Aired live from Orlando, Florida.

[Q1] Previously on Impact, Claire called AJ Styles her baby daddy and Aces and Eights attacked Sting and Hulk Hogan…

Taz and Tenay narrated a recap of the recap we just saw and showing us a twitpic of Hogan's latest surgical scar…

The opening video aired…

The BFGS leaderboard update showed that James Storm returned to the top of the list during house show scuffles…

James Storm made his entrance and congratulated Austin Aries. He said he's still gunning for the title and he still wants to beat up Roode. He then turned his attention to Aces and Eights and warned them that this wasn't the Wild West and he claimed that they were lacking in the testicular department.

Storm said he hopes Hogan gets well soon and then he called out Kurt Angle for his Open Fight Night challenge. Kurt's music played but he did not make his entrance. They tried a few more times, but he still didn’t come out.

Storm sent a camera to the back, who found Angle getting the tar kicked out of him by Aces and Eights…

Ryan's Reaction: I like and dislike this at the same time. I like that they are furthering the Aces and Eights group and continuing to sell them as an uncontrollable threat, but I really don't like the idea of Storm getting involved with them. Storm already has a story in wait with Roode and he has to split some of that focus on Aries because he is the current champion. He doesn't need to be involved in a third angle, especially not with a group that needs to get over just as much as he does.

[Q2] [C] Tenay and Taz recapped the attack on Kurt Angle…

Samoa Joe challenged D'Angelo Dinero to a match in the BFGS.

1. Samoa Joe vs. "The Pope" D'Angelo Dinero in a Bound For Glory Series match. The two men exchanged strikes early, and Pope managed to get the better of Joe after a series of sift jabs. Pope hit an STO for a near fall.

Pope locked in an arm vice and rolled it into a pin attempt but Joe's legs hit the ropes. Pope got in Joe's guard, however, and Joe locked in an armbar for the submission victory…

Samoa Joe defeated D'Angelo Dinero in 3:21 via submission to earn 10 points in the BFGS.

Backstage, Bobby Roode walked with the Hervey cam and he denied that Aces and Eights were a worry for him. Roode confirmed that he would be calling out Austin Aries before Hervey got his camera time…

Ryan's Reaction: Taz gets under my nerves when he tries to get all technical with the hold and MMA jargon and then gets things wrong. Just a pet peeve of mine. Beyond that, I love what they are doing with Joe's submission story. I was surprised to see Pope back and even more surprised to see him control so much of the match. Pope looked to be extremely rusty here as he was sloppy form start to finish, but Joe sold well enough that it made up for a lot of that.

[C] Before Jeff Hardy could say who he was calling out, he was interrupted by Robbie E.

[Q3] 2. Jeff Hardy vs. Robbie E (w/ Robbie T) in a Bound For Glory Series match. Robbie charged Hardy early, but Hardy quickly regained control. Robbie E feigned a hurt eye long enough for Robbie T to attack Hardy.

Hardy wasted no time in making a comeback off of Whisper in the Wind. Hardy took out Robbie T on the floor and was counted out in the process…

Robbie E defeated Jeff Hardy via countout in 2:47 for five points in the BFGS.

Sam Shaw was shown getting ready for his Gut Check backstage...

Ryan's Reaction: That was a disappointing effort. The entire match was interference and very little wrestling and it only served to give Robbie E some points, and I doubt anyone is actually taking his place in the series seriously.

[C] ODB and Eric Young reunited backstage and Young had a long story about why he's been gone. He plugged his new show in the process. They snogged for a spell…

A video recapped the "Claire has a drugged baby of questionable parentage" storyline…

Christopher Daniels and Kazarian backstage were talking to the Hervey cam. They mocked Styles' manhood and said he should just come clean…

Sam Shaw made an awkward entrance full of odd jumps and squats. Shaw yelled about how he's wanted to be a wrestler his entire life and he would prove it tonight. Aces and Eights came out and destroyed Shaw.

Halfway through the assault, the show cut to commercial…

Ryan's Reaction: Well, that was odd; both how Shaw was acting and the commercial cut. Again, more Aces and Eights attacks are good, but they risk overexposure if they have any more attacks this evening.

[Q4] [C] Back from the break, Taz and Al Snow were watching over Shaw as trainers helped him to his feet. Tenay set up a recap of the pre-commercial assault. Shaw was ushered out of the Impact Zone…

Mr. Anderson called out AJ Styles for his BFGS opponent.

3. Mr. Anderson vs. AJ Styles in a Bound For Glory Series match. The two worked some chain wrestling spots early, and they traded holds and pin attempts…

[C] Back from the break, Styles was in control and he got a near fall on Mr. Anderson.

[Q5] Mr. Anderson turned the tables and locked in a series of rest holds on Styles. The two men traded finisher attempts and Anderson managed to hit the Green Bay Plunge for a near fall. Anderson followed with a superplex.

Anderson managed to reverse a rollup attempt to pick up the pinfall victory…

Mr. Anderson defeated AJ Styles in 13:34 via pinfall to earn seven points in the BFGS.

Claire shrieks rang throughout the arena and she demanded that Styles come talk to her. Apparently she's been calling AJ all week without a reply. Styles tried to get Claire to the back but she refused. Claire asked how he couldn't remember that special night. She said it was a passionate, hot night. Ugh.

Claire showed Styles some blurry creeper picks from her "phone." It was basically her making a bunch of odd faces on top of a sleeping Styles…

Ryan's Reaction: That match was ok. Their timing seemed off which led to several clumsy spots. On top of that, a lion's share of the match took place in the commercial, which I feel hurt the flow they were going for. As for as the Claire stuff, please excuse me while I go vomit. I cannot wait for this story to end.

[C] A recap of Claire's photo collection aired…

Styles was backstage staring at the creeper pics…

Sean Wheelock, a Bellator Commentator, joined the announcers on commentary…

RVD called out Christopher Daniels.

[Q6] 4. Rob Van Dam vs. Christopher Daniels in a Bound For Glory Series match.RVD took control early and hit a tree-of-woe running dropkick. Daniels quickly battled back and the two men traded control several times in quick succession.

Daniels eventually settled into controlling the match through a series of kicks and rest holds. Van dam made his comeback and went for Rolling Thunder but Daniels rolled out of the way. Daniels rolled up RVD and had a hand on the ropes for the 1-2-3…

Christopher Daniels defeated RVD in 4:43 to earn seven points in the BFGS.

The Hervey cam caught up with Aries backstage, who claimed that Bobby Roode was the clear fluke and he recalled some of Roode's less than stellar moments with his title reign. Aries found an Aces and Eights warning sign among his cape…

Ryan's Reaction: The Bellator commentator managed to add something to the match despite the constant plugs for his home promotion. The match was rather brief, but Daniels and RVD managed to make it fun.

[C] Taz and Tenay checked in with Brooke Hogan via the phone about Hulk Hogan's condition. She said he was in bad condition despite the photo we saw earlier of a smiling Hulk and his tweet about how he would be getting his revenge…

Joseph Park spoke with Garett Bischoff backstage about how his name was a legal liability. Bischoff countered with a question of what Park did after his match with Bully Ray last week.

[Q7] Bully Ray attacked Magnus before their match could take place. Magnus managed to take over and he beat Bully ray around the ring.

5. Bully Ray vs. Magnus in a Bound For Glory Series match.Magnus and ray battled into the ring and the referee had the bell sound. Finally, a referee in TNA that doesn't ring the bell when men are fighting before a match. Bully Ray quickly regained control as Tenay announced that Sam Shaw would have his Gut Check next week.

Bully ray continued to work over Magnus. Eventually, Magnus made a comeback and locked in a Texas Cloverleaf. Ray managed to make the ropes. Magnus followed with a Michinoku Driver for a near fall.

Magnus missed an elbow drop and Ray capitalized with a cutter for the pinfall victory…

Bully ray defeated Magnus in 4:44 via pinfall to earn seven points in the BFGS.

Samoa Joe took the lead again thanks to his submission victory earlier. James Storm is once again in second place…

A Chavo Guererro vignette with some country music backing aired, announcing his debut for next week…

Bobby Roode made his entrance. He once again said Aries was a fluke and he called out the TNA Champion…

Ryan's Reaction: That match was entertaining. Magnus and Ray work well together and I'd love to see more form them.

[C] Roode continued spewing his fluke mantra and he called Aries out again.

[Q8] 6. Austin Aries vs. Bobby Roode in a non-title match. Roode pounced on Aries and the two men worked an intense, back-and-forth style. Aries roughed up Roode on the floor as the show went to break…

[C] Back from the break, Roode was in control. He continued to rough up the champion. Taz and Tenay decided that Roode must have a connection to Aces and Eights despite the only evidence being a warning sign from the group.

Aries battled back and locked in the Last Chancery, but Roode got a finger in Aries' eye to break the hold. Roode hit a spear for a near fall. Roode set up for a superplex, but Aries fought him off and followed with a flying dropkick. Aries went for the brainbuster but Roode reversed it into a crossface.

Aries reversed the hold into a roll-up. Aries sent Roode to the floor and followed with a suicide dive. Aces and Eights attacked Aries and Tenay went into squeaky voice mode.

Austin Aries vs. Bobby Roode ended in an apparent no-contest in 13:15

Roode looked on in wonder as Aces and Eights put the boots to Aries. Aces and Eights then turned on Roode and the show went off the air with the group attacking both champion and challenger.

Ryan's Reaction: Oh, good. I was worried that Roode was actually going to get paired with the biker gang, which would have made no real sense at all. This move put the group over as a threat to the entire locker room, which I think is the best idea possible for getting the new stable over. Overall, this was a decent edition of Impact. There was plenty of wrestling, but not a lot of I was particularly enthralling to watch. What's worse, this felt like a regular edition of Impact rather than an Open Fight Night because TNA both didn't feature a defending champion and they found a way to renege on the night's Gut Check. Even the challenges ere fused with the BFGS. It all boils down to a show that worked, but not one that managed t set itself apart or produce anything memorable outside of Aces and Eights' continued build.
