8/28 Powell's TNA Impact Live Coverage: Sting explains why he attacked Samoa Joe and A.J. Styles, Kurt Angle vs. Kevin Nash in a Four Ways to Glory qualifier
By Jason Powell Aug 28, 2008 - 10:00 PM

TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped in Orlando, Fla.

[Q1] A video recapped the Sting storyline... Sting arrived at the building in an SUV. Lauren ran up to him with a microphone and asked if the fans would hear from you. "The time has come and tonight is the night," he said... The opening montage aired with footage from the video game... Mike Tenay and Don West chimed in

1. Awesome Kong (w/Raisha Saeed) beat Sojourner Bolt in 2:45. Bolt scored some early offense, but Kong came back quickly and dominated her. Tenay mentioned that TNA and Gail Kim "parted ways." Kong finished her off with the Awesome Bomb. After the match, Kong continued to attack Bolt until ODB ran out for the save. ODB got the better of the brawl and had to be pulled off by referees.

Powell's POV: I'll be honest. I spent the match looking up a spelling for Bolt's name and had no luck. It looks like ODB will be getting a better push now that Gail Kim has left the company.

Backstage, Jeremy Borash interviewed A.J. Styles, who plugged that he will be facing Christian Cage in a Four Ways to Glory qualifying match. Styles also discussed Kurt Angle and told Borash that he doesn't know where Angle's gold medal is... [C]

[Q2] The latest Rough Cuts segment with Consequences Creed aired. He said he mailed a video tape to TNA via their website. He said he received a call from Terry Taylor, who told him the things he could work on. Taylor put over Creed's integrity and charisma. Styles discussed working with Creed in the NWA Anarchy promotion. Highlights aired from Anarchy of Bill Behrens presenting Creed with a TNA contract on the Anarchy television show...

2. Jay Lethal and Consequences Creed defeated Petey Williams (Rhaka Khan) and Sheik Abdul Bashir at 4:20. After some solid back and forth action, Bashir bumped into Petey as he was setting up Lethal for the Canadian Destroyer. Williams wasn't happy. He was even more ticked off after Lethal rolled him up for the win. Williams and Bashir bickered after the match. Referees entered the ring and pulled them apart...

Powell's POV: Petey wrestles like a babyface and plays to the crowd like a babyface, so maybe TNA is just giving in and turning him babyface.

Backstage, ODB cut a promo about Kong... [C]

[Q3] Abyss was the guest on Karen's Angle. He asked if he could make himself comfortable and then threw a chair out of the way and sat down on the ground. He said the doctors made him realize that Abyss is destructive, but "Chris" is a good person. Karen acted afraid. He said he doesn't know what lies ahead for Chris or Abyss, but they are one.

He stood up and asked Karen what she looks for in a man. He got in her face and asked if she likes someone who snarls, whispers, or screams. He laughed maniacally and then read her a poem that said he could take her with him, but she couldn't make a sound. He concluded the promo by ripping out strands of his hair and handing them to her as a gift...

Powell's POV: Strange, confusing, and disturbing. Abyss played his part well and Karen did a nice job of playing the terrorized victim.

Back live, Tenay said they received interesting comments and explanations from Abyss. Shouldn't he have been shocked by Abyss's antics?...

Backstage, Angelina Love and Velvet Sky cut a promo while Kip James played with their hair... [C]

Powell's POV: Love and Sky are very good on the mic, but sometimes less is more. I enjoy their act a lot, but I think there are times when they'd be more effective if they scaled back on their promo time.

Backstage, Jeremy Borash interviewed Kurt Angle and Frank Trigg. Borash referred to Angle as a "former gold medalist." Angle took offense and said he wouldn't go to sleep until he was wearing the gold medal. Trigg kept Angle cool by telling him to focus on his match with Kevin Nash. "Do you think after 10 years I'm going to leave you like Tomko did and go to Japan to be a shoot fighter?" Trigg asked...

Powell's POV: Well, at least Trigg mentioned Angle's match with Nash in the Four Ways to Glory qualifier. You'd think they'd be doing more to hype that match.

[Q4] 3. Curry Man pinned Jimmy Rave (w/Christy Hemme) in 2:35. Curry hit the Spice Rack finisher and scored the clean pin. Lance Rock came out and the Infection roughed up Curry until Super Eric and Shark Boy made the save...

Backstage, Lauren interviewed Jim Cornette, who announced that the Prince Justice Brotherhood will face the Rock-n-Rave Infection and Christy Hemme in a six-man tag match for the pay-per-view. Traci Brooks entered the room and Cornette declared her the "law" of the TNA Knockouts division. "Just remember the Knockouts division is your responsibility now"... [C]

Borash interviewed Booker T, Sharmell, and Team 3D inside Booker's locker room. The "Who is Suicide" graphic flashed across the screen as Booker was talking... Tenay and West hyped the second hour of the show...

Backstage, Boash interviewed Kevin Nash, who commented on Samoa Joe and the chance that he could face him at the PPV...

[Q5] Samoa Joe sat in on commentary for the Angle vs. Nash match. He admitted that he spent the day in the rafters looking for Sting. Doesn't he know what his car looks like?...

4. Kurt Angle pinned Kevin Nash in a Four Ways to Glory qualifier. Joe placed the belt on the desk in front of him and the camera got a really nice shot of the strap. Tenay asked Joe about his temper being an issue. Joe said he uses his temper to his advantage. The action in the ring during the first few minutes of the match wasn't very entertaining, but Joe's commentary helped keep things interesting. [C]

[Q6] Angle locked Nash in the figure four. Nash sold a sore knee even when he was on offense. Nash knocked Angle to ringside right in front of Joe. Nash followed Angle to ringside, told Joe, "Keep your eyes on me, bitch," and then slapped his head. Joe called Nash a motherf---er" and left the announcers' desk as Nash and Angle headed back to the ring.

Joe climbed onto the ring apron. Nash, who was about to go for his finisher, turned his attention to Joe. Angle recovered and hit the Olympic Slam for the win. Afterward, Joe taunted Nash as the announcers talked about Joe's temper... [C]

Powell's POV: Joe did a nice job on commentary. He put over both wrestlers nicely and explained his character's relationship with Nash better than all the backstage segments have. He explained that he's aware of Nash's desire to win the title. For the first time in recent memory, Joe didn't come across like a meathead who was being manipulated by Nash.

Nice work by Joe. He's already better than Don West on commentary and it would help his character a lot if he sat in on commentary more. I'm not sure how Joe's temper was to blame for this one, though, as Nash slapped him for no reason.

West hyped the upcoming house shows... A video recapped "the mystery of the guitar"... At ringside, Tenay and West said people have been speculating about who is responsible for the guitar shots. Come on. Tenay finally admitted the guitar shots have been "synonymous with just one man"... A Jeff Jarrett video package aired... [C]

Powell's POV: The Jarrett video package concluded with Jeff crying about the death of his wife Jill. The footage has aired before, but I feel like they are leaving themselves vulnerable to accusations of exploiting her death if they continue to air that footage on a regular basis.

[Q7] Backstage, Lauren interviewed SoCal Val, who had a really corny looking black eye. She got upset with Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt for fighting over her. She was so upset that she decided to hang her engagement ring above the ring and let the winner of their match win her. No, really...

Powell's POV: It doesn't make any sense, but I get a kick out of that stipulation.

A Knockouts video aired. Yes, Gail Kim was among the Knockouts featured...

5. Angelina Love and Velvet Sky (w/Kip James) defeated Roxxi and Taylor Wilde in 8:50. Four minutes of forgettable action led up to the break. [C] In the end, Kip handed his spray bottle to Sky, who sprayed it into Roxxi's eyes. Moments later, Love scored the pin. Afterward, they gave the brown paper bag treatment to Roxxi. Taylor came back and slapped Kip, but Love and Sky roughed her up. They teased cutting her hair. Rhyno made out the for the save...

Powell's POV: Wait, isn't Abyss the guy who saves everyone?

[Q8] [C] Another brief Sting video aired...

Sting headed to the ring for a promo. Sting said he considered retiring from pro wrestling, but he wondered what would happen if he turned over the future of the business to the next generation of wrestlers. He said it would be a grave mistake because they would spit in the face of it.

Sting recalled Samoa Joe having Booker T beaten, but refusing to take the pin. He said Booker is a legend. The crowd cheered. He said he came to the ring that night to help Joe. He said Joe flipped him off even though he paved the way for him. Sting recalled Ric Flair taking him under his wing. He said he respected Flair and everyone that paved the way. The crowd continued to cheer.

A.J. Styles was Sting's next target. He said he doesn't owe Styles anything because he paved the way for him to become a wrestler. He said A.J. should thank him every time he writes his mortgage check. Sting said most of the young guys in the back are "a bunch of spoiled rotten brats." The crowd cheered again.

"One way or another, I'm going to bring respect back to this business," Sting said. He invited anyone who wanted to tell him differently to come say it to his face. A.J.'s music played and he stormed to the ring.

"You're wrong, you're dead wrong," Styles said. A.J. said he looked up to Sting and idolized him. "I never, ever disrespected you, ever," Styles said. A.J. said that he helped get the company started. There were some scattered cheers. Sting said you can't respect someone and call them a coward all in one breath.

Sting said Styles took his match against Kurt Angle at Hard Justice one step too far. He said he could have scored the pin and walked away. "You don't see Michael Phelps spitting in Mark Spitz's face, do you?" Sting asked. Sting handed his bat to Styles, turned around, and invited Styles to strike him with it.

"Go ahead, A.J., hit me over the head with it," Sting said. He pointed to fans in the crowd and said some of them wanted him to do it. Styles spun Sting around and wound up with the bat, but Sting kicked Styles in the gut and hit him with the Scorpion Death Drop.

Jeff Jarrett's music played and Sting looked concerned. "Don West, you recognize that music just like I do," Tenay said. "And it's obvious to me that Sting is not the only one who is playing mind games"...

Powell's POV: Good mic work by Sting, but I'm not sure what to make of it since the fans were cheering him even though he's supposedly the heel. Tenay and West sound like absolute goofs when they avoid saying Jarrett's name. I'll have more to say about this show in the TNA Impact Hitlist on Friday.
