8/21 Twilling's TNA Impact Live Coverage: Kurt Angle vs. AJ Styles in a ladder match, Awesome Kong vs. Gail Kim in a street fight in what could be Kim's final TNA match
By Rich Twilling Aug 21, 2008 - 10:00 PM

TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped in Orlando, FL

[Q1] Footage aired of last week's show. After the video, Jeremy Borash interviewed Kurt Angle as he exited his vehicle. Angle said everyone knew who was behind the guitar and that this was not two years ago. He said he would get his gold medal back tonight...

The opening video aired. Mike Tenay and Don West ran down tonight's show...

1. Hernandez (with Hector Guerrero and Salinas) defeated Robert Roode (with James Storm and Jacqueline) in 6:24. Hernandez hit Roode with a delayed vertical suplex at the one minute mark. Salinas stupidly distracted the referee so Beer Money could double team Hernandez.

Hernandez looked like he was attempting the Border Toss, but he hit a Dominator instead for a two count. Roode then hit a Blockbuster for a two count. Storm tried to interfere but it backfired, allowing Hernandez to hit a torture rack slam for the win... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: In between all of the interfering, this was a pretty good match.

[Q2] JB interviewed AJ Styles backstage, who was wearing the gold medal. Styles called himself an Olympic gold medalist. Styles said there was no mystery as to where the guitar came from, just like there was no mystery as to where Angle has been getting the baseball bat. Styles said he would give Angle a chance to win the medal back tonight in a ladder match. Angle tried to get to Styles but was held back by security...

Twill's Two Cents: Is it annoying to anyone else that they announce the Impact matches on TNA.com, but then they make it seem like Styles is making the challenge for the first time? By the way, I could steal a gold medal from Shawn Johnson, but that would not make me a gold medalist.

2. BG James and Eric Young defeated The Motor City Machine Guns in 3:48. The Guns ran circles around both Young and James in the first two minutes, including multiple double team moves. After a series of impressive moves, Young surprisingly scored the pin on Sabin after a modified reverse neckbreaker.

After the match, Shelley slapped hands with James and Young, but Sabin did not. Sabin spit in his hand and slapped James in the face. They brawled for a while before they were broken up by security...

Twill's Two Cents: What the hell? Why are the Guns jobbing to these guys?

Backstage, Angle was about to enter Booker's locker room as JB tried to explain the rules to him. Upon entering, Booker told both Angle and JB to remove their "footguards." Angle asked Booker to be in his corner tonight so they could figure out what is going on behind the guitars. Booker said he had business to take care of with "one Rhinoceros" but he would be in Angle's corner... [C]

[Q3] A history package involving Jay Lethal, Sonjay Dutt, and SoCal Val aired... Karen's Angle aired with SoCal Val as her guest. Val could have won an overacting award. Sonjay approached Val and told her to pick him. She started to kiss Val but was absolutely ambushed by Lethal. Val was laid out after trying to break it up...

Twill's Two Cents: Wow, that was bad. Karen's Angle has to be the shortest interview show ever because someone always breaks it up in about twelve seconds.

Rough Cuts featuring Consequences Creed aired. Creed put over Kurt Angle as he and his high school friend talked in length about a high school wrestling match Creed had. This was another very good segment featuring Creed...

The voiceover guy plugged the Gail Kim vs. Awesome Kong and Kurt Angle vs. AJ Styles matches... [C]

3. Matt Morgan defeated Frankie Capone in 2:00. Morgan sounds a lot like Goldberg. Too bad he did not have Goldberg's coordination. Morgan dominated before hitting the Hellevator for the win...

After the match, Brother Ray came out with a microphone in hand. Ray called Morgan a moron and asked him how it felt to beat a guy with no future in the business. He baited Morgan toward him and Devon attacked Morgan from behind. Abyss came down and cleared the ring of Team 3D...

Twill's Two Cents: Was Ray absolutely correct or what? By the way, Frankie did not us Italians proud in this match!

Gail Kim was shown taping up in preparation for her match... [C]

[Q4] Mike Tenay interviewed Kevin Nash in a pretaped segment. Nash said he played a big part in bringing Joe to TNA. He said he liked Joe and that they were friends. Nash said Joe's temper management was three steps forward and two steps back.

In talking about Sting, Nash referred to the business being much different than it was twenty years ago. He said he gave up his chair to Harley Race at his first house show. Race told Nash he was broken in correctly. Nash said the locker room was full of men back then but now it is full of boys. He said they understand the pecking order but they do not care about it. Nash said Sting would speak for himself and would be on the show next week...

Lauren interviewed The Beautiful People and talked about Angelina Love challenging Taylor Wilde for the Knockout's Title at No Surrender. Kip James came in and whispered something to Love and my wife. They walked in a room where Wilde was having her hair done. They attacked her and drew on her face...

JB interviewed Rhino. He said he would defeat Booker T and go onto the main event at No Surrender...

Twill's Two Cents: Three interview segments in a row? Slow down TNA; this is not a race to cram as much into each quarter hour as possible.

4. Booker T (with Sharmell) defeated Rhino in a Four Ways to Glory match in 10:16. Booker danced around for awhile before the two men finally locked up. Booker and Rhino exchanged hammer locks as the pace remained relatively slow at the beginning.

[Q5] Sharmell interfered but Christian Cage came out and physically removed her from ringside... [C]

Booker hit a roundhouse kick for a two count coming back from commercial. Booker missed the axe kick and Rhino landed a huge closeline. Rhino missed a top rope move and Booker hit the axe kick for the clean win...

Twill's Two Cents: Despite a couple of sloppy spots, this was an entertaining and solid match.

Lauren asked Gail Kim if she thought it was a good idea to involve herself in a street fight with Kong. "What kind of stupid question is that? You expect me to pack my bags because I am in a street fight with Awesome Kong?" Kim put over the fact that she is not the nice, innocent girl she is portrayed as... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: I guess she decided to pack her bags after all.

A movie called "Righteous Kill" is coming out starring Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino, the two greatest actors of our time...

Footage aired of Petey Williams defeating Consequences Creed at Hard Justice...

[Q6] 5. Consequences Creed defeated Petey Williams (with Rhaka Khan) by disqualification in a X-Division Championship match in 7:11. Creed and Williams had an impressive chain wrestling exchange in the first minute or so of the match. With Petey on the floor, Creed tried a baseball slide but Petey sidestepped him and guided him into the guardrail.

Petey took the advantage into the ring. Sheik Abdul Bashir stood and watched from the stage. Creed hit a huge leg drop from the top rope but could not get the win. Petey went for the Canadian Destroyer but Creed fought out of it. Petey hit a sweet snap swinging neckbreaker for the nearfall.

Creed hit a gorilla press slam into a gutbuster combination maneuver. Bashir came down but Creed hit a suicide somersault plancha onto both men on the floor. Back in the ring, Creed was approaching a victory, but Bashir blatantly interfered, causing the disqualification...

After the match, Petey and Bashir argued in each other's faces...

Twill's Two Cents: Very good match until the very disappointing finish. They worked too hard for something that blatant and anticlimactic.

The Prince Justice Brotherhood delivered a "summons" to The Rock 'N Rave Infection for embarrassing rock and roll music. Curry Man tried to pronounce "Miley Cyrus." The Infection attacked the Brotherhood with their little play guitars... [C]

[Q7] As Awesome Kong made her entrance, Katie Kim looked like she was going to cry...

6. Awesome Kong (with Raisha Saeed) defeated Gail Kim in a street fight in 6:10. Kim and Kong fought on the floor at the beginning of the match. They then fought into the stands. All this did was show how cheap this facility is with their crappy looking bleachers.

They keep showing a concerned Katie Kim. I guess she went to the same acting school as SoCal Val. Kong grabbed a kendo stick but Kim was able to intercept it and use it on Kong. Kong missed a closeline and hit the steel post instead. Back in the ring, Kim beat the shit out of Raisha Saeed with a kendo stick.

Kong slid a chair into the ring but Kim used it first for a long two count. For future reference, the chair was wedged into a corner. Remember that. Kong charged into the corner at Kim but rammed the chair instead. After a few exchanges, Kong hit the Implant Buster for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: There would have been money in Kong holding onto the title for about a year, obliterating people along the way, and having Kim, who is Kong's biggest rival, finally defeat her for the belt. Oh well. That only went six minutes? That was a very good street fight.

After the match, Kong and Saeed set up a chair and had a plan for Gail. Referees unsuccessfully broke things up. Katie entered the ring and instead of dragging Gail out, she sat there and consoled her. Kong pulled Katie up by the hair and was going to give her the Awesome Bomb, but ODB and Roxxi ended that party. Kong and Saeed took off as Tenay and West sold it as the worst thing ever...

Kurt Angle was shown walking through the backstage area with a ladder... [C]

[Q8] 7. AJ Styles (with Samoa Joe) defeated Kurt Angle (with Booker T and Sharmell) in a ladder match to retain Kurt Angle's Olympic gold medal in 13:24. Angle tried to get the medal before the match started. Booker kept Styles from the ring but Samoa Joe hit the ring to even up the sides.

Twill's Two Cents: I wonder if Christopher Daniels is pissed that Styles and Joe are where they are and he is dressed up as a human spice.

After some very fast paced and impressive action, Styles and Angle were both down on the floor. Sharmell came down to the ring to apparently try and get Booker to leave the ringside area... [C]

Angle was choking Styles in the ring coming back from break. Sharmell and Booker were still in Kurt's corner. Angle hit a drop toehold onto Styles onto the ladder. Ouch. Angle set up the ladder and hit a released German suplex. He then applied a very intense reverse chinlock or chokehold.

Angle went for the Olympic Slam but Styles countered it into a DDT. Styles hit a move that is best described as a FU into a backbreaker. Styles set up the ladder but Angle rose to his feet. AJ threw Angle into the ladder and his cut could have been reopened.

Styles climbed the ladder but Angle hit an Olympic Slam. Angle then climbed the ladder but Styles tipped the ladder over. Because of the six-sided ring, Angle landed very awkwardly in the corner. Joe and Booker brawled outside the ring. Sharmell slipped Booker a bat and kissed Joe to distract him. Booker knocked out Joe with the bat.

Both Angle and Styles climbed the ladder. The lights went out and Jeff Jarrett's music hit. The announcers, despite the music, still did not mention Jarrett by name. When the lights came back on, Styles had the guitar and hit Angle with it. Angle fell off the ladder and Styles grabbed the gold medal for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: Just say his name already! Give Angle and Styles credit. They worked their asses off here and gave the fans a free PPV quality match. I am probably in the minority, but I am looking forward to the return of Jeff Jarrett.

This was a mixed bag show for me. If they let their talented wrestlers wrestle and slowed things down a bit storyline wise, this would be a very entertaining two hours. What did you think? Let me know by shooting an email to dotnetrich@gmail.com.
