TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped in Orlando, Fla.
[Q1] Highlights aired from last week’s show... This week’s show is called “Alligator Honeymoon”... Backstage, Jeremy Borash stood by with a mic while Kurt and Karen Angle bickered. Kurt told her to take care of the mess with A.J. Styles “or else.” He said he doesn’t like the boys laughing behind his back. Karen complained that it’s always about Kurt. “Why don’t you take your drama somewhere else,” Kurt asked. Karen said she’d take it to someone who appreciates is... The opening montage aired... Mike Tenay and Don West introduced the show...
Powell’s POV: Karen has been a pleasant surprise since she arrived in TNA, but this was not one of her better acting performances.
1. A.J. Styles and Tomko defeated Kip James and Bob Armstrong (w/B.G. James) at 3:38 to retain the TNA Tag Titles. B.G. used crutches to get to ringside. Tenay said B.G. severely hyperextended his knee at the PPV. Kip wore Torrie Wilson’s outfit again. Karen walked to ringside with a big smile on her face. The monster Tomko had to sell for Bob again. I know this will shock everyone, but Kip turned on Bob and B.G. this week. He took B.G’s crutch and hit the old man with it. Then he struck B.G. with it.
Powell’s POV: The tag champions needed a heel turn to beat a guy dressed up in Torrie Wilson’s outfit and a 90 year-old man.
Backstage, Gail Kim and ODB told Crystal they would go through anyone to get to Awesome Kong. The women left the area and A.J. and Karen entered. Styles said he kissed Karen last week because someone had to. Karen acted like they are married. A.J. was reluctant to go along with it until Karen told him that Kurt said she should go to her other husband...
[Q2] [C] Backstage, Crystal interviewed the guy wearing Torrie Wilson’s outfit. Kip said he just got rid of a 250-pound piece of shit (censored)...
Jim Cornette stood in the ring with Matt Morgan, Sonjay Dutt, Alex Shelley, and Chris Sabin. Cornette put over Machismo’s accomplishments and thanked him for saving the X Division. Jay Lethal wore a Black Machismo shirt, but spoke in his normal voice. He said he got his smile back at Against All Odds. He thanked Christopher Daniels, Jerry Lynn, and A.J. Styles for being founding fathers of the X Division. Lethal called So Cal Val to the ring. He got down on one knee and asked, “Val, will you go out with me.” She replied, “Oh yeah.” He went into Macho Man mode by saying, “Oh yeah, dig it”...
Powell’s POV: Are there any X Division wrestlers left other than Johnny Devine and the guys who were in the ring? One can only hope that this will somehow lead to Daniels abandoning the Curry Man gimmick and knocking the Machismo out of Lethal.
Backstage, Crystal interviewed Kas until Eric Young interrupted. Eric begged “Frankie” not to wrestle Rellik. “He’s just another wrestler,” Kaz told him... [C]
[Q3] West hyped the upcoming house shows... Backstage, Crystal stood by while Cornette presented Samoa Joe with his contract. Joe said he wanted to do it in private because they’ve been interrupted so many times. Joe, wearing shades, told Cornette to hold on. He said he wants a fair shot at the TNA Title. He said the only way that could happen is if he, Kurt Angle, and Christian cage wrestle the Angle Alliance at Destination X. Then, he said he wanted his title match inside a cage at Lockdown. He said he would sign his deal after he wins the belt at Destination X. If he didn’t win the title, he said there would be no point in him being in TNA...
2. Kaz beat Rellik at 2:33. Rellik played the monster role throughout the match. He locked in a choke hold, but Kaz pushed off the ropes with his feet and he landed on top of Rellik. Kaz got the pin even though Rellik didn’t release the hold. Afterward, Black Reign ran out and attacked Kaz. Eric Young thought about running out, but he backed away in fear of the monsters....
Backstage, Booker T cut a promo about his match with non-title match with Angle and Bobby Roode. Good, confident promo from Booker... [C]
Powell’s POV: Let’s back up here for a moment. Please tell me the main event of Destination X is not the six-man tag match that Joe proposed. One can only hope there’s stipulations involved or they have another main event in mind because that’s just not a pay-per-view caliber main event on paper.
[Q4] A video recapped Abyss’ latest story line... At ringside, the announcers questioned why Abyss would walk out of the Impact Zone. West said they didn’t know where he went. The announcers hyped the remainder of the show...
3. Petey Williams defeated Sonjay Dutt and Johnny Devine in a three-way match to determine the No. 1 contender for the X Division Title in 3:00. Hey, there is another X Division wrestler. Sweet. Scott Steiner and Rocka Khan walked to ringside. Steiner interfered and helped Petey pin Devine. Afterward, Petey reluctantly shook hands with Steiner...
A handheld camera followed Styles and Karen on their “honeymoon.” They went to a restaurant. A.J. presented her with flowers and a snow globe that his grandmother gave him... [C] Pre-taped footage aired of Tenay conducting a sitdown interview with Rhino, who discussed his feud with James Storm and hyped the Elevation X match...
Backstage, Crystal interviewed Curry Man and Shark Boy. Curry and Crystal danced until Shark Boy went into Stone Cold mode...
[Q5] Curry Man, Shark Boy, and Team 3D made their ring entrances. “If you’re not entertained by Curry Man and Shark Boy, then you don’t have a pulse,” West said... [C]
Powell’s POV: Oh shit! Whew. West lied. It’s still beating.
4. Brother Ray (w/Devon, Johnny Devine) beat Shark Boy and Curry Man at 4:30. Before the match, Brother Ray weighed in under the limit. However, Devon was over this week. Ray chastised Devon for being oveweight. Early on, Ray knocked Curry down and performed his own dance routine. Funny. In the end, Brother Ray hit Shark Boy with the scale and scored the pin...
Backstage, Crystal interviewed Kurt Angle. He said his wife and A.J. can have each other. His focus is on the TNA Title... [C]
[Q6] Footage aired of Styles taking Karen to “Gatorland.” A.J. prodded an alligator with a rake. Karen screamed. He said he was taking her to see birds on the next stop... Back in the studio, Tenay noted that it appeared Karen was falling for A.J.’s boyish innocence...
5. Roxxi Laveaux and Miss Jackie beat ODB and Gail Kim at 7:24. Roxxi ditched the silly heavy makeup now that she’s done with VKM. Back and forth action until the break. [C]
[Q7 Late in the match, Roxxi pulled ODB into Gail’s missile dropkick. Roxxi pinned Gail. Afterward, ODB and Gail fought and had to be separated by security. Gail broke free and dove off the top rope onto ODB and two security guards at ringside...
Backstage, Crystal interviewed Joe, Nash, and Cage. Christian said he thought of Tomko as family and always had his best interest in mind. He said Tomko knew he’d never be as good as him. Christian did all the talking while Joe and Nash just stood there... [C]
Powell’s POV: Is Nash getting paid by the word or something? Dutch Mantel loved his sense of humor, but now he gets paid to just stand in the background.
Borash and the cameraman followed A.J. and Karen to a hotel. They stood in front of a hotel room door, where Styles kissed Karen on the cheek and said he’d make everyday their honeymoon. He entered the room and told her goodnight. Karen looked like Styles had swept her off her feet...
6. Kurt Angle pinned Booker T at 15:36 in a non-title match. Booker controlled the early action and clotheslined Angle to the floor before the break. [C]
[Q8] Angle and Booker picked up the pace for a few nice exchanges before they went to yet another break. [C] Late in the match, Robert Roode walked to ringside and distracted Booker. Angle hit the Olympic Slam for the win. Afterward, the heels beat up Booker. Christian ran out to even the numbers. Samoa Joe ran out and cleared the ring. Nash got in the ring, grabbed the mic, and challenged Angle to a one-on-one match next week...
Powell’s POV: Nash speaks! I’d like to say I’m surprised that the main event ended as a result of outside interference, but most TNA main event matches end that way. The people who make these calls have to know how tired and predictable it is. The main event was solid, but nowhere close to great before the cheap finish.
I’ll have much more to say about this show in Friday’s TNA Hitlist.
