TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped in Orlando, Fla.
[Q1] A brief video recap of last week's show aired... This week's show is called "A Victory Road drive-by"... Outside the building, Jeremy Borash stood between Homicide and Robert Roode and said they had both accepted the rules to a parking lot brawl...
Powell's POV: Yeah, but it's not an NYC parking lot brawl like John Cena and JBL are having.
1. Homicide fought Robert Roode to an apparent no-contest in a parking lot brawl. Mike Tenay and Don West started screaming the moment the match started. Shocking, right? At roughly 2:30, Jacqueline jumped in and helped Roode. Moments later, someone wearing a hood showed up and attacked him. In a shocking twist, the masked man revealed himself to be James Storm.
The heels handcuffed Homicide and led him inside the building and into the ring. Hernandez ran out for the save. He beat up the heels and then hoisted Roode up for the Border Toss. He held him for several seconds while waiting for Storm to break it up. Looked bad. Hernandez took off his belt and whipped both members of Beer Money until they left the ring. Hector Guerrero and Salinas were out there tending to Homicide.
Sting's music played while LAX was still in the ring. The camera showed him hanging out in the rafters like he did over 10 years ago in WCW... [C]
Powell's POV: Have I mentioned that I hate the Beer Money name? It just sounds low budget and it doesn't fit Roode's persona whatsoever. Yes, I realize he's the money part of the name, but the overall team name doesn't work for him.
A video hyped the World X Cup. The narrator stated, "With each match, a new star is born." Sure... Tenay hyped the standings for this dorky tournament that only he cares about. Mexico leads with three points, Japan is in second with two points, TNA is in third place with one point, and team international blows and has yet to score a point...
[Q2] 2. Doug Williams pinned Masato Yoshino in an X Cup match in 5:00. Tenay did a nice job of selling the match as power vs. speed. In the end, Williams rolled through a rollup and turned it into a suplex and a bridge for the win. Cool move. Team TNA is now is last place. Losers...
Powell's POV: There are plenty of talented performers in this tournament, but I can't help but mock TNA's hyping that a new star is created with every match. There haven't been any new stars created because the tournament wins don't mean anything. The wrestlers involved are either newcomers or TNA performers that TNA fans have been conditioned to view as undercard performers, so it means nothing when one wrestler beats another.
Backstage, Borash followed Kurt Angle as he stormed into the Beautiful People locker room and told them to start preparing for their match. After Angle left, Angelina Love and Velvet Sky gave Jeremy Borash the brown bag treatment... [C]
Video footage aired of Sonjay Dutt instructing students at a yoga studio. He flirted with backstage interviewer Lauren, and then kicked out Petey Williams because he wouldn't make a donation. Jay Lethal showed up out of nowhere and attacked Sonjay until he hid behind a group of his young students...
The announcers hyped the remainder of the show including Angle and Love and Sky vs. A.J. Styles and ODB and Gail Kim... Backstage, Lauren interviewed Taylor about her title match with Kong...
Powell's POV: Taylor needs some work behind the mic. Terrible acting.
[Q3] A video hyped the Victory Road pay-per-view match between Angle and Team 3D vs. Styles and Christian Cage and Rhino... [C] The latest edition of Matt Morgan's "Rough Cuts" aired. More of the same with him talking about how great it is in TNA compared to WWE. Kurt Angle said he sees Morgan as being a special attraction. He said it's different than being a main eventer because a special attraction is so popular that he doesn't need a title...
3. Tomko and Kip James and Petey Williams (w/Rhaka Khan) defeated B.G. James and Eric Young and Matt Morgan in a falls count anywhere match in 4:45. Even West sounded bored while explaining that Young forgets about his pyro and falls down every time he comes out. Petey worked his ass off and ended up using a huracarana on Young at ringside for the win.
[Q4] After the match, the heels teased beating up Young with Petey's pipe (yeah, I wrote it). Rather, they stood around waiting until Abyss ran out for the save. Abyss cleared Tomko from the ring. He picked up the pipe and looked at it. Then he pushed it away and backed off, while the announcers questioned whether they were seeing a new Abyss... [C]
4. Taylor Wilde pinned Awesome Kong (w/Raisha Saeed) to win the TNA Knockouts Title and $25,000 in 8:00. Kong charged at Taylor and controlled the opening minute of the match. Roxxi came out and pointed at Saeed, and the announcers said she was there to watch Taylor's back. [C]
Kong continued on offense until she missed a second rope splash attempt. Taylor went on offense and scored a good nearfall with a missile dropkick. Later, Kong hit the Implant Buster, but Taylor kicked out. Kong flashed a great shocked look. A short time later, Kong went for the spinning back fist. Taylor ducked and then rolled up Kong for the win.
[Q5] Afterward, Borash interviewed Wilde at ringside. She said it was the happiest night of her life and that dreams can come true... [C]
Powell's POV: Good match. Taylor's promos are really corny. The announcers did a solid job of selling the upset. This was a big enough deal that I would have had all the babyface Knockouts come out to celebrate Taylor's win. That really would have put it over the top. The post-match interview was a nice touch, but they cut away too quickly. Hell, she should still be celebrating at ringside after the break.
Backstage, Borash interviewed Team TNA. Kaz handled all the mic work and did a much better job than usual. He said he wasn't going to let a team come into their house and win. Um, too late. Last place losers...
5. Kaz pinned Ultimo Guerrero in an X Cup match in 5:35. The rest of Team TNA walked onto the entrance ramp and cheered for their teammate. After some solid action, Kaz tried to springboard off the top rope, but he slipped and fell to the ground. He came up holding his knee. Guerrero immediately went for a pin, as the announcers explained that the ropes get slippery throughout the night.
In the end, Kaz hit the Wave of the Future and scored the clean pin. His teammates celebrated on the ramp. Team TNA is now tied for first place with Team Mexico. TNA is tied for first place! I always knew they could do it. Never had a doubt. Those guys are winners...
[Q6] Backstage, Lauren interviewed A.J. Styles, Gail Kim, and ODB. Styles spoke about how much he respected Kim and ODB. They all took turns on the mic... [C]
Powell's POV: It's cool to have the men put over the women and they certainly deserve it. However, A.J. probably isn't the right guy to be doing it. He already looks like a henpecked wuss for following around with his best girlfriend Karen Angle.
West hyped upcoming house shows... The announcers ran through the pay-per-view lineup until Jim Cornette came out and interrupted them. He said Taylor is the new star of the X Division. He announced Taylor vs. Kong has been added to the show...
Backstage, Angle got upset because the Beautiful People were backstage tanning. He said they are just like his wife in that all they care about is what they look like and how big their boobs are. "Screw your boobs," Angle yelled... [C]
[Q7] A video recapped the Samoa Joe and Booker T storyline... Booker came to the ring and asked Samoa Joe to join him in the ring. Tenay and West said he had promised to issue a public apology to Joe. The champ walked out wearing street clothes with the belt draped over his shoulder.
Booker said he respects Joe and added that he's sorry... "for what's going to happen in my hometown of Houston, Texas." Booker said Nash is right—"You can't beat me, Joe." Booker said Joe is a paper champion who hasn't beat anyone. Booker got in Joe's face and demanded to know who he's beaten. Booker started running down the list of people he's defeated. For some bizarre reason, he started with Rick Martel. Then he mentioned Steve Austin and Chris Jericho.
Booker said it's not personal. "This is business." Booker extended his hand to Joe and said may the best man win. Joe accepted Booker's handshake and then pulled him in close. Joe took the mic and said Booker would be sorry he called him out, said his name, and spoke to him with bass in his voice.
"Live in Houston, Texas, in front of your friends, in front of your family, and in front of your wife, you're going to be sorry the words Samoa Joe ever came out of your mouth," Joe said. Nice.
Sting's entrance music interrupted Joe and Booker at just the right time. Sting walked down the entrance ramp with the tired baseball bat in his hand. Sting said Joe and Booker have him hooked. He polled the crowd. He said he doesn't know who is going to win at Victory Road, but he's going to be there to watch... [C]
Powell's POV: Major league mic work from Joe and Booker. Booker carried the segment and then Joe hit a home run with his short and sweet response. Ideal use of Joe on the mic. Keep his comments short and make every word mean something. Well done.
A video featured clips of Gail Kim and Angelina Love discussing their pay-per-view match. Good mic work by both women. Love was fantastic...
[Q8] 6. A.J. Styles and ODB and Gail Kim beat Kurt Angle and Angelina Love and Velvet Sky in 9:15. After some back and forth action, Frank Trigg walked to the ring for the Angle team. Meanwhile, Karen Angle walked down the other entrance ramp. Call me crazy, but I'd rather have the MMA guy in my corner. [C]
Highlights aired from during the break of Trigg arguing with Styles, which let Angle attack his opponent from behind and take control of the match. Later, A.J. dove over the top rope and onto Angle at ringside. In the ring, Kim pinned Sky to win the match for her team.
Afterward, Kurt attacked Styles from behind. While everyone else was fighting, Karen snuck in and punched Kurt below the belt. Trigg entered the ring and slammed Styles. Kurt, who clearly has amazing ball recuperation abilty, jumped up and put the ankle lock on Styles... A video hyped the Victory Road pay-per-view to close the show...
Powell's POV: This wasn't a great go-home edition. It had it's moments and the last 30 minutes were entertaining, but it failed to get me more excited about Sunday's pay-per-view than I was coming in. I'll have more to say about the show in the TNA Impact Hitlist.
