6/5 Twilling's TNA Impact Live Coverage: X-Division KOTM Match, Cage and Rhino vs. Booker and Roode, Styles vs. Tomko, Velvet Sky vs. ODB
By Rich Twilling Jun 5, 2008 - 10:01 PM

TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped in Orlando, FL

[Q1] The opening video aired. Mike Tenay and Don West welcomed us to the show. Tonight is the first ever King of the Mountain match on free TV. The winner will receive a TNA World Championship match next week on Impact…

1. Christian Cage and Rhino defeated Booker T. and Robert Roode by disqualification in 4:56. Roode has one of the worst “hometowns” ever. He is billed from “Wall Street.” Cute. Rhino and Roode started the match. Christian tagged in and hit a sweet spinning heel kick on Roode.

Christian became the face who takes the prolonged beating in a tag match. Booker and Roode worked well together with multiple tags. Christian finally came back with an inverted DDT on Roode at 3:30. The ring has extra loud microphones underneath tonight.

Rhino and Booker tagged in. Rhino hit a shoulder block followed by a spinebuster. All four men came in. Christian took Roode out on the outside. Booker went for the scissors kick but missed. Rhino gored Booker, but before he could get the pin, Team 3D interfered. This is like the New World Order.

Team 3D set up a table and tried to take out the faces. A.J. Styles came out and evened things up. Styles took the mic and reminded Christian and the fans of their history. He said he hoped they could someday be on the same page. He then said he would beat the piss out of Angle at the PPV.

He then addressed Tomko. He said he would beat him tonight “in this very ring.” Jim Cornette came out of nowhere and officially made the match as well as naming Kevin Nash the special enforcer…

Twill’s Two Cents: The match was sort of a letdown given the big names. A.J. as the underdog who will not stay down is progressing nicely. It was logical to make him look strong here.

Jeremy Borash interviewed Samoa Joe earlier on as he was working out in the ring. Joe told Kevin Nash it did not matter whether or not he trusted him, because he trusted himself… [C]

[Q2] Back from commercial, Lauren said she was not paid enough to deal with The Beautiful People every week. Sky said the paper bag treatment was too good for Lauren. Sky had Lauren hold up a blown up trading card of The Beautiful People over her face.

Sky said she has pimples on her backside more attractive than the marks in the arena. Nice. Angelina Love said Sky would not break a sweat tonight as she continuously called ODB “Butch.”. Sky kissed the camera. Raisha Saeed and Awesome Kong approached Lauren to remind her of the fan challenge…

2. ODB defeated Velvet Sky (with Angelina Love and a brown paper bag) in a street fight in 4:14. ODB spit chew at Velvet Sky. ODB went to the outside and took out Love. She threw Sky into the crowd. ODB charged at Sky but missed and hit her knee into the wall.

They fought up through the crowd and back down. They finally got back into the ring. An Angelina Love distraction allowed Sky to knee ODB in the head. She scored a nearfall. Velvet locked in an Octopus. ODB powered out and abused Velvet from pillar to post.

She hit a fallaway slam. ODB attacked Love on the apron. Velvet charged and almost hit Love. ODB dropkicked Sky into Love. She then hit a running powerslam for the win. After the match, Love laid out ODB. Roxxi and Gail Kim came out. An unnamed woman came down and laid out the faces. They gave Gail the brown bag treatment…

Twill’s Two Cents: The beginning of the match was awkward. Once they settled in the ring, the action was very solid. Of course, I could watch Velvet all day long.

They cut to Jay Lethal’s bachelor party. Jeremy Borash handled the mic and he was drunk. Lethal was wondering where Lanny Poffo was. Sonjay had something serious to tell Lethal, but he is waiting until Sunday to tell him. James Storm, B.G. James, and Sharkboy all made comments… [C]

[Q3] Back from commercial, the latest Eric Young video was aired. He went to Graceland. He saw a Ferrari. He said he once had a Fiero. That was the most humorous moment of all these videos…

Tenay and West ran down the Slammiversary card. It is hard to believe this is already the company’s six anniversary…

Part three of the Sting interview aired. Tenay said one of the names most linked to Sting is Ric Flair. Sting said three of his top five matches ever were against Flair. Tenay made reference to Flair’s retirement ceremony. Sting said Flair and Brett Favre went out in 2008 and he is thinking along those lines as well… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: I like how they referred to Flair here. I know WWE sometimes likes to believe that no other time period or company ever existed (on the air). Is Sting really retiring or is he coming back for the 100th time?

A video featuring the King of the Mountain match aired. It was a historical piece and a description of the match at the same time. Out of character interviews putting over the match and the title from all five competitors were shown…

[Q4] 3. Kaz defeated Jimmy Rave (with Christy Hemme), Chris Sabin, Johnny Devine, and Curry Man in a King of the Mountain match in 16:16. Curry Man and Sabin paired off, as well as Devine and Rave. Rave took out Kaz on the apron. Sabin hit a suicide dive on Rave. Devine climbed the penalty box and hit a moonsault on all of them… [C]

Back from commercial, Rave rammed a ladder into another ladder into Kaz. Rave scored a pin on Curry Man during the commercial, becoming the first eligible winner of the match.

Rave went up the ladder, but Sabin hit a springboard dropkick on the ladder. He pinned Rave. Sabin went up the ladder, but Kaz threw a ladder at him to knock him down. Sabin used the X as a weapon. Sabin and Kaz both climbed ladders and fought each other off.

Curry Man monkey flipped Kaz into a ladder. Devine set up a ladder and suplexed Curry Man onto it. Sabin drove the ladder into Devine. He set up a ladder in front of his face and hit the hesitation dropkick… [C]

Devine and Curry Man hit a simultaneous superplex. Sabin and Kaz fought at the top of the penalty box. They teased big moves. Sabin hit a high cross body on Curry Man. Devine tried to hit Kaz with a ladder, but Kaz used it on Devine. Kaz splashed Rave with the ladder and pinned him. Devine scored a quick pin on Kaz.

[Q5] Devine climbed the ladder but Sabin stopped him. He went up again but Curry Man grabbed him and hit the Spice Rack for the pin. He threw Sabin out of the ring. Kaz beat up Devine in the penalty box. Curry Man inexplicably moved one ladder to set up another one.

Kaz came in and knocked Curry Man from the ladder. He intercepted the X, climbed the ladder, and hooked it to win the match…

Twill’s Two Cents: Great spot match. I guess I see the reasoning in having the match; it might wet the appetite of those on the fence to order it with the main eventers. Unfortunately, that match will not be as good as this one was. Everyone worked hard here and put their bodies on the line. Impressive.

They showed another King of the Mountain video with the competitors talking about their favorite King of the Mountain matches from the past…

Jeremy Borash, Awesome Kong, and Raisha Saeed came out to the ring. Once again, anyone who accepts the challenge and defeats Kong will win $25,000 and the Knockouts Championship. Borash said he recognized a few of the volunteers. Daffney from WCW was there. Borash mentioned knowing her from WCW. Kong selected Daffney…

4. Awesome Kong (with Raisha Saeed) defeated Daffney in a $25,000 challenge and Knockout’s Championship match in 2:34. Daffney came right at Kong. Kong came back with a bunch of nasty looking shots. She put her up in a rack and hit Daffney’s foot against her head. Kong threw her to the outside.

Kong did some damage on the outside before throwing Daffney back into the ring. Kong hit an Awesome Bomb and scored the pin. The other women, who Tenay referenced as professional wrestlers, looked on in disbelief…

Twill’s Two Cents: It was cool to see Daffney, but squashing her did not serve much purpose. I am getting into this gimmick. I love the shoot aura about it, complete with the waiver. Borash is playing his part well here.

[Q6] They aired the latest Abyss video. He did an evil laugh and kept repeating “three more days.” Of course, the PPV is in three days…

Backstage, Lauren interviewed Kevin Nash. Nash said he had a gameplan. Lauren asked what that was. Joe came in and wondered the same thing. Joe was pissed and confused regarding Nash’s actions.

Nash told him to take the bass out of his voice. Nash told Joe to shit or get off the pot. He gave Joe the bat and turned his back on him, threatening him to end it now. Joe said if he came to Nash, he would not need the bat and Nash would not need to turn his back…[C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Great backstage promo. Joe’s intensity was fantastic and Nash was at his manipulative best.

Back from commercial, they went back to the bachelor party. Sonjay had telegrams from the groomsmen. In order, Koko B. Ware, George “The Animal” Steele, and Kamala. Everyone hooted and hollered. Sonjay said every bachelor party needed a stripper, so he brought out Kip James. Everyone booed and Sharkboy vomited…

5. Matt Morgan and LAX (with Hector Guerrero and Salinas) defeated Lance Hoyt (with Christy Hemme), Kip James, and James Storm (with Jacqueline) in 6:06. After a series of irish whips and reversals, Homicide hit a sweet overhead belly to belly suplex on Storm. Homicide crotched chopped James before going back on the offensive.

Jacqueline beat up Homicide on the outside. Salinas was bout ten minutes late getting over there. Jacqueline shoved her on her ass. Hoyt hit a nice fallaway slam on Homicide. Morgan received the hot tag and awkwardly took out the heels. He is not real smooth.

[Q7] Morgan hit Undertaker’s Old School, but Hoyt hit a moonsault on Morgan. West called it a “backward moonsault.” Yes, that is the opposite of a frontward moonsault. All hell broke loose in the ring. Morgan hit his finisher, sort of, and scored the pin on James…

Twill’s Two Cents: If I needed a bathroom break, that would have been the time to take it. Morgan needs a lot of ring work before he can capitalize on his immense size and power.

Backstage, JB interviewed Scott Steiner, while Petey Williams and Rhaka Khan looked on. Steiner was at his incoherent best here. He asked who Kaz has ever beaten. He called Terror Dome a circus act. He tried to say “unadulterated.” Petey tried to speak, but the show had to go to commercial… [C]

Back from commercial, Kurt Angle and Karen Angle, live via satellite in Hollywood and Pittsburgh, respectively, got ready for “point-counterpoint.” Kurt said he was the victim. He said he gave his wife a nice house, a great life, and two children. Karen said she appreciated all of those things, but she just wanted him. She said she loves Kurt.

Kurt said love was a tricky word. Yeah it is. Kurt asked what was so wrong about him putting his career ahead of his family. He said Karen cheated on him with Styles, probably in his own bed. Tenay chimed in, obviously taped earlier due to zero crowd noise, and Angle told him to shut up.

Karen said nothing ever happened between her and Styles. Kurt repeated “bullshit” over and over again. He stormed off from his interview area. JB interviewed Styles for his reaction. Styles started yelling and screaming. He told Angle, “screw you” and said Angle would not get up at Slammiversary…[C]

Twill’s Two Cents: I cracked up when JB said something to Steiner earlier and he replied with, “Shut up Jeremy!” I did the same when Kurt said “Shut up Mike” to Tenay. Sometimes the announcers need to do just that. This whole angle with Kurt and Karen has been hit and miss with me, but I thought Kurt was funny tonight.

[Q8] Ace Young was at the bachelor party. He said Sonjay’s family sent a cake from New Delhi. Christy Hemme came out of the cake. Hopefully she was not in the cake during the plane flight. Sonjay then introduced ODB, who wheeled out a box. There was a huge snake in the box. Sonjay said Jake Roberts was also going to be at the wedding…

Twill’s Two Cents: This is the worst bachelor party of all time.

6. A.J. Styles defeated Tomko with Kevin Nash as the special enforcer in 7:46. Styles hit a somersault suicide dive over the top onto Tomko onto the floor before the opening bell rang. Awesome. They fought back into the ring. Tomko backdropped A.J. to the floor and he hit his arm on the apron. Nash stood over Styles as both competitors were in serious pain…[C]

Back from commercial, A.J. hit an awesome dropkick. During the commercial, Nash involved himself by pulling Tomko off of Styles. Styles went for the Styles Clash but Tomko hit a two handed chokeslam. While that happened, Kevin Nash cut off Robert Roode before he could get to the ring.

Booker T. tried to get to the ring as well, but Nash cut him off also. Styles hit the Pele kick, followed by the frogsplash for the win. Nash entered the ring and stood with Styles. Booker came in and attacked Nash with a chair. Here we go.

Roode, Team 3D, LAX, and Samoa Joe joined the already crowded ring. Joe and LAX cleared the ring of most everybody. Joe hit Booker with short jabs. Nash swung a chair at Booker but he ducked, causing the chairshot to hit Joe instead. Nash tried to apologize but Joe pushed him away…

They played a music video while hyping the Slammiversary card…

Twill’s Two Cents: I think Styles vs. Tomko could be a big PPV feud, so giving away their first meeting in an eight minute match was odd. However, no one will remember this match in a month. After the last two shows, I said more people should have come to the aid of A.J. Styles. This week, everyone came out and it was a mess. I absolutely hate the “accidental chairshot.” It is obvious Nash was trying to hit Booker. Joe looks stupid for getting pissed. Then they may portray it as Nash going after Joe the entire time, which also makes little sense. Oh well, I am busting balls here. There were a lot of positives on this show and the PPV buildup was pretty solid.
