5/22 Powell's TNA Impact Live Coverage: King of the Mountain qualifying matches, ODB vs. Angelina Love
By Jason Powell May 22, 2008 - 10:00 PM |

TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped in Orlando, Fla.
[Q1] Backstage, Jeremy Borash snuck up behind Team 3D as they made plans with someone who was behind a locker room door. They turned around and ushered him out of the picture... A recap of recent storylines aired... The title this week is "Kurt and Karen: The beginning or the end?"... The opening montage aired... Mike Tenay and Don West introduced the show and questioned who Team 3D was making a deal with in the backstage area...
1. Homicide defeated Brother Ray in 3:20. After a few minutes of solid action, Homicide had Ray pinned when Devon ran out and broke up the pin with a kendo stick shot. Hernandez ran out for the save and got the better of Devon. Booker T ran out and helped Team 3D beat up LAX. Tenay assumed Team 3D was talking to Booker earlier. Both LAX members bladed and the heels left them lying...
Powell's POV: Booker and 3D hooked up last week so why would anyone be surprised that they were together this week? The beatdown was okay, but nothing spectacular. It might be more effective if Team 3D didn't do that to every team they feud with. Oh, and the blood added soooo much. I can see why the Motor City Machine Guns are still being punished for not blading. Puh-lease.
Backstage, Borash greeted Karen Angle, who told him to expect the unexpected regarding her and Kurt. After Karen walked off, Awesome Kong and Raisha Saeed handed Borash a note. "$25,000 to wrestle fans?" Borash said while reading the note... [C]
[Q2] A video showcased Angelina Love and Velvet Sky's recent antics... Backstage, Lauren interviewed ODB, who said she dislikes bleached hair and fake breasts. Lauren questioned whether ODB's breasts were real. ODB grabbed Lauren's hands and placed them on her breasts to prove that they're real. ODB claimed her breasts are filled with vodka..
Powell's POV: If ODB"s breasts are real, then she had an incredibly late breast development phase since I saw her work on the indy scene a few years ago.
2. Angelina Love (w/Velvet Sky) defeated ODB in 3:05. West said he was dreaming of "boobies filled with vodka." Funny. In the end, Sky struck ODB with her own flask, allowing Love to score the pin. Afterward, Roxxi ran out to save ODB. She got love in a position to shave her head, but the referee took the the shears away for no good reason. Roxxi responded by giving him the Voodoo Drop...
A shot aired of Samoa Joe and Kevin Nash walking together backstage... [C] Tenay and West babbled at ringside...
[Q3] A well done video explained the rules of the King of the Mountain match. The video footage showed current TNA wrestlers as well as Jeff Jarrett, Ron Killings, and Sean "X-Pac" Waltman...
Samoa Joe and Kevin Nash walked to the ring wearing street clothes. Joe announced his picks for the King of the Mountain qualifying match: A.J. Styles, Rhino, Christian Cage, and Booker T. Joe put over Styles by saying he's wrestled him all over the world inside and outside TNA, and said he's damn close to being the best wrestler in the world.
Before announcing Booker's name, Joe built him up by saying he's a great competitor and has held titles everywhere he's gone. Nash thought Joe was referring to him. Nash took offense. He said he's sick of Joe not doing what he's told. "When you don't do what you're told, the machine breaks down," Nash said. "And when the machine breaks down, Joe, we break down. Joe, I ain't gonna allow that." Nash left the ring...
Powell's POV: Good, slow build. Well, except for the fact that they do these nice segments one week and come out acting like best of pals the next week. That being said, this was well done. Joe was also very good on the mic. He adjusted nicely on the fly when the crowd chanted Christian's name before he announced it.
Backstage, Borash followed Kurt Angle and Frank Trigg into the bathroom. They stood next to one another at two urinals and Borash stood behind them with the mic. Funny. Angle talked about getting back together with Karen and then turned his attention to going out to celebrate with Trigg. Frank suggested Kurt should be with Karen, but he said she'd be busy doing the laundry he hasn't done in a month and other household work. Funny... [C]
A TNA live segment showed clips of the wrestlers at house shows... Backstage, Lauren spoke to Black Machismo and SoCal Val about their upcoming wedding while a jealous Sonjay stood by. The Rock-n-Rave Infection auditioned to perform at the wedding. Lance Hoyt and Jimmy Rave played Guitar Hero guitars while Christy lip synched. Sonjay flipped and accused Christy of lip synching and said he's friends with an American Idol finalist. Hoyt punched Machismo from behind and the cameras cut away...
[Q4] Inside the padded cell. Abyss said the mental hospital graciously allowed the cameras to come back as a going away present. He said he's known as Chris Parks inside the hospital, but he'll always be Abyss. He said he was an addict and it's time go home. "It's time for Abyss to go home"... [C]
Powell's POV: Pretty much the same thing as last week. A nice teaser for his return even if they're not telling much of a story. Basically, we know he's addicted to pain and mutilation, which we pretty much figured it out before just based on watching his matches.
Backstage, Lauren interviewed Robert Roode, who said Booker finally understands what he'd been trying to teach him. He also questioned what made Matt Morgan worthy of appearing in a King of the Mountain qualifying match...
3. Robert Roode pinned Matt Morgan in 4:00 in a King of the Mountain qualifying match. Tenay announced that A.J. Styles would face Booker T in a qualifying match later in the show. Morgan lost his temper and picked up the referee out of frustration. Roode took advantage and used the ropes for leverage while scoring the pin... [C]
Powell's POV: Wow, that was boring. I like both wrestlers, but that just didn't go well. Morgan looked like a meathead for picking up the referee, and the match was just bland and forgettable. What's worse is that we're one hour into the show and we've seen roughly ten minutes of wrestling thus far.
[Q5] In Memphis, Eric Young continued his search for Elvis. A man told Young that Elvis died in 1977 and directed him to another part of town...
Powell's POV: The payoff better be good because these segments are just awful.
A video recapped the Angle family follies... Kurt walked to the ring and introduced his wife as the most beautiful woman in the world. Karen has now has her own entrance music and video. The crowd chanted, "Karen Styles." Karen told Kurt he's not capable of changing. Kurt asked if she's seeing A.J. Karen said there's nothing between her and A.J. "We are just friends," she said. "He's been there for me. He understands me."
Kurt got down on his knees and begged Karen to give him a second chance. Karen moved toward Kurt, but put the microphone down and left the ring. Kurt begged for her to stay. "Do it for the kids," he said. She left the ring as the fans sang, 'Sha-na-na goodbye"... [C]
Powell's POV: The Angle segment was pretty much exactly what you would expect it to be. I could live without the Karen entrance video, though. Anyway, a friend just emailed me to say that Ace Young, the American Idol contestant that TNA mentioned, is "a loser from two seasons ago." I don't watch Idol, but my friend is not impressed. "Way to be topical," he wrote. "What a f---ing joke!" Wow.
[Q6] Backstage, Borash told Saeed that Kong couldn't wrestle a fan. Kong grabbed him by the throat and said Saeed told him he'd go through with it... A video recapped the birth of Little Petey Pump and recapped Kaz winning the TerrorDome match to earn a title shot...
Powell's POV: I'm so happy we got to relive the birth of Little Petey Pump. Ugh.
Backstage, Lauren interviewed Styles, who said he's just friends with Karen. He also said he had to find a partner while Tomko was "in Japan." Tomko showed up and complained that A.J. lost their tag titles. Tomko shoved Styles, and this time Styles shoved him back and said he's sick of Kurt and everyone else. Tomko shook Styles's hand and said A.J. could be his own man by himself... [C]
The second part of Tenay's interview with Sting aired. Tenay said personal issues have prevented Jeff Jarrett from appearing in TNA. He asked if Sting has had contact with Jarrett. Sting said no, then corrected himself and said he's only spoken with him briefly a few times. Photos aired of Jeff's late wife and daughters while Sting commented on him. Sting recalled going to Jerry Jarrett's house to cut promos and seeing a young Jeff hanging out...
Powell's POV: I thought these segments were supposed to rebuild Sting in some way? I guess not. So far, they've done more for a guy who doesn't work for the company and a guy who hasn't appeared on the air in over a year. It's fine if Ultimate Warrior is coming in and Jarrett is returning television, but it does seem odd that Tenay is asking Sting to stroll down memory lane rather than discuss his current career.
In the ring, Borash explained the rules of the King of the Mountain match while a ladder was set up behind him. He said it was time for the second qualifying match, but Kong and Saeed walked out and interrupted him. They forced Borash to issue their $25,000 challenge to the fans in attendance. A blond woman named Melissa stepped up and accepted the challenge...
[Q7] [C] 4. Awesome Kong squashed Melissa the fan in a $25,000 challenge match in 1:25. All Kong, who won with the Awesome Bomb. Replay showed that Melissa's knee struck her own head while she was taking the Awesome Bomb...
Powell's POV: A fun old school gimmick.
Backstage, Lauren interviewed Team 3D cut a promo. Well, actually, Ray spoke about LAX, then introduced Booker T, who was sitting behind them on a locker room bench. Booker said he's been in TNA for six months and doesn't get as much respect as he deserves. He said he hangs with Team 3D rather than peons like Styles. Booker complained about the dumpy locker room and then picked up a plaid shirt and said, "Look at this." Brother Ray took it from Booker and said it was his. Booker apologized, then pulled down a shelf and continued his rant... [C]
Powell's POV: Good promo by Booker with a good humorous bit snuck in. I like the new Booker.
[Q8] 5. Booker T defeated A.J. Styles in a King of the Mountain qualifier in 4:50. Early in the match, the announcers hyped a Nash promo, and comments from Sting regarding Ric Flair's retirement in the third part of his interview. Great, now they're hyping retired wrestlers who never worked for the company. Maybe there will be some intrigue to see what type of worked comments Sting will have about Flair.
After a few minutes of routine opening action, things picked up when A.J. went on offense. Tomko walked to ringside. A.J. went for a springboard off the ropes, but Tomko reached in and pulled him down. Booker took advantage by hitting the Bookend for the win. Afterward, Styles and Tomko shoved one another until they were separated by the refs... [C]
Powell's POV: It looks like they're teasing a Styles vs. Tomko match just in case Angle isn't ready to wrestle at the pay-per-view. Maybe they'll turn it into a three-way if he's healthy.
After the break, Styles and Tomko were still exchanging shoves. Booker and Team 3D came to the ring to help Tomko. Styles fought them off, but was eventually outnumbered. The heels (all former WWE wrestlers) beat the hell out of Styles. Karen ran out to save them, but Bubba shoved her aside. The attack continued on A.J.
Karen returned with Kurt Angle, who brought a chair to the ring. The heels ducked out when Kurt entered the ring. Karen knelt over A.J. That didn't sit well with Kurt, who pulled her off and then nailed Styles with a chairshot. The other heels held Karen while Kurt held up A.J.'s bloody head and yelled at Karen to close the show...
Powell's POV: The beatdown angle was really well done. The blood definitely helped in this case. Am I the only person who notices that all five heels are former WWE wrestlers? Am I the only person who noticed that Tomko stopped taking his Flintstones chewables? The announcing did nothing to enhance the angle, though, because Tenay and West only know one speed and they're both really bad at faking emotion. I'll have a lot more to say about this show in Friday's TNA Hitlist.
