5/22 Twilling's TNA Impact Live Coverage: Samoa Joe picks his four King of the Mountain qualifiers, ODB vs. Angelina Love, Angle family drama
By Rich Twilling May 22, 2008 - 10:01 PM

TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped in Orlando, FL

[Q1] Backstage, Jeremy Borash eavesdropped on Team 3D making a deal with someone unseen. Team 3D told Borash to get the hell out of there…

They played a love/hate themed video, highlighting Kurt and Karen Angle, SoCal Val and Black Machismo, Team 3D and Hector Guerrero, and Samoa Joe. The caption at the end asked if this was the beginning or the end for Kurt and Karen…

The opening video aired. Mike Tenay plugged ODB vs. Angelina Love. Don West hyped Matt Morgan vs. Robert Roode in a King of the Mountain qualifying match…

1. Homicide defeated Brother Ray (with Brother Devon) by disqualification in 3:26. Homicide was on a mission as he just kept coming at Ray despite being fought off repeatedly. Homicide brawled with Ray early. Ray took over after catching a charging Homicide with a big elbow.

Ray slowed the pace of the match down, using his size (and man, there is a lot of size) to overpower Homicide. Ray dedicated a middle rope backsplash (as Tenay called it) to Hector Guerrero, but he missed. Homicide hit multiple closelines, but he could not drop him.

Homicide hit two top rope moves followed by the Gringo Stunner. Before he could score the pin, Devon came in and hit Homicide with a kendo stick, causing the disqualification. Devon brought a table into the ring, but Hernandez came out and laid out both members of Team 3D.

Hernandez attempted to hit the Border Toss on Devon, but Booker T. came in kicked Hernandez in the face. The three then used the tag team title belts to bloody both members of LAX. Ray continued to taunt Guerrero by yelling into the camera. Ray powerbombed Homicide through a table…

Twill’s Two Cents: Homicide can definitely work and he did the majority of it here. This was a natural progression in the feud. I wonder though why Hernandez was not in Homicide’s corner at the start of the match.

Backstage, JB ran into Karen Angle. She told him to expect the unexpected. JB was immediately met by Awesome Kong and Raisha Saeed. Saeed told JB to read a note and they would be back later. JB read the note and it said something about $25,000 to wrestle fans… [C]

[Q2] Back from commercial, a video of The Beautiful People was shown, focusing on their role in Roxxi Laveaux getting her head shaved and Gail Kim losing her title match last week…

ODB said backstage that she hated pretty people, bleach blondes, and that her tits were real and filled with vodka…

2. Angelina Love (with Velvet Sky) defeated ODB in 3:03. Tenay said Gail Kim “severely strained” her ACL and would speak on it next week. ODB spit vodka in Love’s face. Sky distracted ODB right away, allowing Love to gain the advantage. She used the referee’s shirt to wipe her eyes.

Love grounded ODB with a reverse chin lock. She turned it into a sleeper, but ODB lifted her and backed her into the corner to break the hold. She hit a nice fallaway slam and nipped up. She hit a side slam for a nearfall.

The finish came when ODB was knocked out by Sky with the flask as both women approached the ropes. Love scored the pin. After the match, Love and Sky were going to shave ODB’s head. Roxxi made the save. She was going to shave Love’s head, but referee Rudy Charles stopped her. Roxxi hit Charles with the Voodoo Drop…

Twill’s Two Cents: Good match. Love used mat work and ODB showed off her power. I absolutely love The Beautiful People (especially Velvet Sky). Their characters have so many directions they can go in (and Sky can head in my direction).

Backstage, Samoa Joe and Kevin Nash were walking backstage as Tenay wondered whom Joe would choose. A plug for more Abyss footage was shown… [C]

Back from commercial, Tenay plugged Morgan vs. Roode in a qualifying match, as well as a second qualifying match to be determined once Joe made his picks. They wondered what would happen with Kurt and Karen, as well as the Awesome Kong fan challenge…

They showed a video of the history of the King of the Mountain. In one of Jarrett’s victories, you could hear Tenay say in a pissed off tone, “Jarrett is the champion again!” Yes, that was what the fans were thinking too. This was a very good video package highlighting the great moments of past KOTM matches…

[Q3] Samoa Joe came to the ring with Kevin Nash in tow. Joe was waiting to talk, but Tenay just went on and on and on. Joe said he and Nash had trouble deciding. His first pick was A.J. Styles. His second pick was Rhino. His third pick was Christian Cage. As he led up to the fourth pick, Nash was blushing. Joe named off a bunch of characteristics that described Nash.

He then named his fourth pick, Booker T. Nash was pissed. He took the microphone and asked how he could have Joe’s back without being in the match. Joe said the fans do not pay to have someone watch his back. Nash said he had a problem with someone who does not do what they are told.

Nash said when someone does not do what they are told, the machine breaks down and they break down. Nash said he would not let that happen as he left the ring…

Twill’s Two Cents: I like how Joe named the four quickly and did not drag it on. I hope they do not have Nash, a notorious manipulative person, get the best of Joe mentally. Joe is already physically tough; if he is one step ahead of Nash, it would take his character to another level.

Backstage, JB was walking with Kurt Angle and Frank Trigg. As they both took a piss, Angle asked Frank to have beers with him after the show. Frank said he should be with Karen instead. Kurt said Karen had a bunch of household chores to do, like cleaning and laundry. Trigg wondered why JB was in the bathroom with them and why he was always around… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Angle cannot wrestle so some of this backstage stuff is funny. When he comes back, I hope he gets serious.

They plugged live events coming back from commercial. If they come to your town, try to go. TNA does a great job making it worth your while…

Backstage, Lauren was so excited for Val and Lethal getting married. Val was excited and said the Rock ‘N Rave Infection wanted to audition to be their wedding band. Val thought Christy Hemme’s (lack of) clothes were inappropriate. Sonjay said he already had an American Idol finalist singing at the wedding. I think he said Ace Young. I have no idea who that is. They argued and Hoyt hit Dutt with a plastic guitar…

Twill’s Two Cents: Why would they audition someone when they already had a singer for the wedding? They should call Robbie Hart. He is a good wedding singer.

[Q4] Tenay introduced yet another video, this one of Abyss. The pads in his room look like sheets tacked from the ceiling. He said he was fixed and they told him he was better now. He said he would never be better but it was time for Abyss to come home…

They plugged the Angle drama as well as Roode vs. Morgan… [C]

Back from commercial, Robert Roode was interviewed backstage. Lauren said Roode should give Jim Cornette credit for putting this together. Roode faked a smile but then said he has been spinning his wheels for four years, but he finally has a shot at the heavyweight championship.

Roode congratulated Booker T. for finally seeing things his way. Actually, he has to like him now because they are both heel. He said Matt Morgan did not even qualify to be in the same ring as him. He said he will be in the King of the Mountain match. Good promo.

3. Robert Roode defeated Matt Morgan in a King of the Mountain qualifying match in 3:57. Morgan towered over Roode. That surprised me a little bit. Tenay read a note from “TNA management.” The second qualifying match tonight will be A.J. Styles vs. Booker T.

Morgan followed a huge back body drop with a big boot. He went for another kick, but caught his leg up in the ropes. Roode chopblocked the other leg and continued to work on it. Roode kept Morgan grounded, but did not do much else.

Morgan finally got to his feet and hit a headbutt and closeline. He then hit a sideslam. Morgan powered Roode into the corner. He picked up referee Earl Hebner in a chokehold and dropped him to the ground. Roode rolled up Morgan, put his feet on the ropes and scored the three count…

Kurt Angle, dressed in a suit, made his way through the backstage area…[C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Roode did his best to carry Morgan. Morgan should have been disqualified, so that did not make much sense. Hopefully this rub with help Roode move to the next level.

[Q5] Does anyone else get annoyed with the stupid crowd shots they show us coming back from commercials? Maybe it is just me…

Tell you what does annoy me for sure though, Eric Young looking for Elvis. He thought he found him but it was a cardboard cutout. He met a guy named Kenny who smoked away most of his brain cells. Even he knew Elvis was dead…

They showed another “As the Angle Turns” video. Some of this is stupid and corny. Other parts are hilarious. However, the theme music and the “serious” narration is absolutely classic. Here we go…

Angle made his way to the ring. West said Angle was being sincere in his own mind. Angle introduced “the most beautiful woman in the world,” Mrs. Karen Angle. A “Karen Styles” chant broke out. Funny.

Is Karen wearing a shirt or a table cloth? Karen was crying. Kurt asked Karen to accept her role. Kurt said Karen gets caught up in Dr. Phil drama. Karen said she came tonight with a shred of hope they could work it out. She said she wanted a divorce.

Kurt told Karen he could change; that he could be the man she wanted him to be. He asked if she was seeing A.J. Styles. She said they were just friends and A.J. was there for her. Kurt went down on two knees and begged Karen to stay. Karen dropped the microphone and took off.

Kurt yelled at Karen as she walked away. “Do it for the kids!” “I can change.” “Karen! Karen! Karen!” Angle was “heartbroken” in the ring as Karen retreated up the ramp… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: I just praised Kurt Angle’s comedy earlier in this report. However, I stand corrected. That was just stupid. I cannot think of a better way to say it. It was stupid.

[Q6] Back from commercial, they plugged the best of TNA 2007 DVD and more live events…

Tenay said Petey Williams would defend the X Division title against Kaz at the PPV. He said JB “had his hands full” backstage with Kong and Saeed. JB wanted nothing to do with the fan challenge, but if he did not go throw with it, Kong would destroy him…

Twill’s Two Cents: Earlier, JB was in the bathroom watching Angle and Trigg urinate. Later in the show, they say he “had his hands full.”

They showed a video showcasing the transformation of Petey Williams into someone Scott Steiner could be proud of. Highlights of Kaz winning the Terror Dome was shown as well…

Lauren interviewed A.J. Styles backstage. Styles reiterated him and Karen just being friends. He addressed Tomko being mad at him for finding a new tag team partner. Styles wondered where Tomko has been. Tomko was pissed at Styles for losing their titles.

Styles stood right up to Tomko saying he is tired of people trying to intimidate him. He said he is going to do what he wants, when he wants. Tomko respected that and shook Styles’ hand, telling him he was now on his own… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Finally! I hope A.J. becomes the A.J. of old and simply steals every show. An extended program with Joe and Styles sounds damn good to me.

Back from commercial, part two of the Sting interview took place. Sting said he has barely seen Jeff Jarrett due to his personal tragedies and he is missed by the entire locker room. He mentioned Jim Hellwig again...

JB stood in the ring surrounded by the King of the Mountain “set.” He explained the rules of the match because they are pretty ridiculous and easy to forget…

Awesome Kong and Raisha Saeed came to the ring. JB said he wanted nothing to do with this. Why are they going to JB with this? Why aren’t they going to Cornette? Kong would destroy JB if he did not make the challenge…

[Q7] JB said a female of at least 18 years of age was welcome to accept the challenge. An athletic looking blonde woman took the challenge. Tenay told JB to have her sign the release waiver now!… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: The women’s division is loaded, so Kong should be working her way through all of them. That being said however, I will give this a “wait and see.” It could lead to something.

4. Awesome Kong defeated Melissa in 1:15. Kong beat the crap out of her and hit the Awesome Bomb for the pin…

Backstage, Brother Ray told Lauren what happened tonight was payback. He said Lauren was turned on by their attack as he rubbed her cheek. They warned A.J. Styles because he was facing Booker T.

Booker said he has been disrespected since he came to TNA. He called himself the most decorated champion in wrestling history. He said A.J. would be a stepping stone. Booker was upset with his locker room. He grabbed a shirt and said, “Look at this!” Ray grabbed it and said, “That’s mine Book.” Booker turned over a locker and kept bitching… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Booker T. has always been a mid-carder to an upper mid-carder in my book (no pun intended). When TNA signed him, I feared he would push someone like Styles down a spot.

5. Booker T. defeated A.J. Styles in a King of the Mountain qualifying match in 4:52. For all of those people who complain about the Wrestlemania DVDs cutting out classic theme music, it makes me wonder how TNA can use basically the exact same song for Booker.

[Q8] Slow start to the match. Booker was able to control the offense with punches, kicks, and chops about a minute into the bout. Styles gained the offensive advantage and began to whip Booker into multiple corners.

Booker hit a huge kick and bodyslam. Booker punched Styles and West noted Booker had to open up his fist. I have not heard that since Gorilla Monsoon pointed out that rule back in the 80s.

Booker controlled A.J. for awhile but Styles hit a sweet springboard top rope forearm. Tomko made his way to ringside. Styles went for a springboard again, but Tomko tripped him. Booker hit the Bookend for the victory…

Tomko confronted Styles. Styles punched Tomko and before they could brawl, two referees stopped them… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: The match was obviously a way to progress to storylines, so it was not much. Styles vs. Tomko intrigues me. Hopefully they do not give Booker the title.

Back from commercial, Styles and Tomko were still going at it. Team 3D ran to the ring. Brother Ray needed an oxygen mask. Styles held his own for awhile, but the four on one advantage proved to be too much.

Tomko hit Styles in the head with a steel chain. Booker warned Hebner to stay out of it. Styles bladed. All four men traded off hitting their moves. Does A.J. have any friends? Is this going to go on for the rest of the show?

Tenay called for help. Karen Angle ran to the ring. That will even things up! Karen covered A.J., and then slapped Brother Ray. Feeling intimidated, she went and got Kurt Angle. He had a chair. You know what is coming next. After being egged on by the four, Angle swung and sort of hit Styles with the chair.

Karen covered up Styles again. Angle threw her off and held up Styles as the others forced Karen to look. Kurt screamed at Karen that all of this was her fault as the show went off the air…

Twill’s Two Cents: Wow, that was gruesome. I actually liked the beating though because it will make Styles look stronger when he starts to pile up victories against these guys. What I don’t like is that no one came down. Last week, LAX let Hector Guerrero get beat up. Team 3D was involved in this; where were they? Booker T. was involved; where was Samoa Joe? It looks like it could be a nice summer for fans of A.J. Styles; let’s hope they do not screw this up.

As for the show, it was like they crammed in twenty videos and backstage segments. There were long stretches without matches. I don’t know; this was definitely a strange show tonight, but it did progress some things while beginning others, so it was not all bad.

What did you think of the show? Your emails are appreciated. Rich Twilling can be reached at dotnetrich@gmail.com. To my west coast readers, feel free to follow along with me during Smackdown tomorrow night.
