11/4 Powell's TNA Impact Live Coverage: D'Angelo Dinero vs. Abyss, Mickie James and Ink Inc. vs. Generation Me and Tara, final hype for Sunday's Turning Point pay-per-view
Nov 4, 2010 - 08:00 PM

By Jason Powell

TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped at Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla.

[Q1] The show opened with a recap of last week's angle with Matt Morgan... The show is called "Kung Fu Bischoff"... Backstage, Ric Flair pumped up Eric Bischoff, who was dressed in a gi. They ordered a referee to follow them to the ring. They made their entrance and Bischoff performed karate kicks while Flair rooted him on.

Mike Tenay and Taz checked in on commentary as Flair and Bischoff made their way to the ring. Once inside the ring, Bischoff said he had major business, but wanted to start by addressing the issue with Morgan. Bischoff said he, Flair, and Hulk Hogan talked it over and Morgan is no longer part of Fortune or Immortal.

"Stay the hell away from the Impact Zone and good luck with your future endeavors," Bischoff said regarding Morgan. Bischoff turned his attention to Mr. Anderson. Bischoff said he would give Anderson a match against Jeff Hardy if he could he could him in a match first.

Bischoff said he wanted to give Anderson a taste of what he's in for. He called for the referee and accused him of wrongdoing in the Morgan vs. Jeff Jarrett match last week. Bischoff attacked the referee and threw him to ringside. "You're fired," Bischoff told the fallen ref. Flair bowed to Bischoff. Tenay explained on commentary that Anderson has post concussion syndrome and was at home...

The opening montage played... The announcers ran through the advertised matches... Backstage, the remaining members of Fortune badmouthed Morgan. Douglas Williams didn't look pleased... [C]

Powell's POV: The opening segment was nothing special. People will complain about Bischoff putting himself in the spotlight, but there's a serious shortage of over heel talent right now. Granted, some of that might be attributable to Bischoff and Hulk Hogan taking so much of the spotlight in the past, but it's not like this particular angle would work with A.J. Styles or Jeff Jarrett in a similar role to what Bischoff is playing tonight.

[Q2] Backstage, Tommy Dreamer, Rhino, and Stevie Richards tried to convince Rob Van Dam that he was feeding into the paranoia that Bischoff was trying to create. Fortune showed up. A.J. Styles said one of the EV2 members are going home (per the pay-per-view match stipulations).

Styles got in Rhino's face and said he thinks he will definitely be the one. Rhino tried to gore Styles, but ended up goring Van Dam accidentally instead...

Powell's POV: We're supposed to think it's Rhino going home, but there are reports that Sabu is actually finishing with the company this week. I guess we'll find out on Sunday.

Tenay and Taz spoke with Mr. Anderson on the phone as footage played of Jeff Hardy striking him on the back of the head with a chair shot. Anderson said he's had a couple of concussions during his career already and he doesn't know when he'll be ready. He said his short-term memory went away and it was a scary feeling.

Anderson said he was on his way to the Mayo Clinic to have his head looked at. The announcers mentioned that Matt Morgan stood up for him last week. Anderson said he appreciates it, but he doesn't even know if he can trust Morgan at this point given everything that has happened lately...

Powell's POV: I guess Anderson's short-term memory made him forget that he was in the same role a while back when Jeff Hardy wasn't sure whether he could trust Anderson. Solid promo from Anderson, who toned things down and sounded like a sympathetic figure rather than deliver a promo using his usual amped up persona.

Backstage, Velvet Sky spoke with Angelina Love briefly before leaving the room. When Sky left, Angelina turned around and spotted Winter (a/k/a Katie Lea Burchill) in the mirror. Love turned around and spoke to her. Winter said Love would never have to be alone again. Love said she likes to be alone and she left the room. When the camera went back to the mirror shot, Winter was gone... [C]

Powell's POV: There was a lot of speculation that this was similar to the old Ultimate Warrior mirror hallucination angle, and the fact that Love turned around and still saw her should put that to rest. I dig what they're doing with Winter, and she's playing the character in a very dark and eery manner. Um, can we have a match now?

1. Sarita defeated Velvet Sky in 4:05. The announcers noted that Sky told Love she had something to prove in their locker room conversation. Love performed an early head scissors that Taz sold by acting surprised she performed the move.

[Q3] After some back and forth action, Sarita powebombed Sky scored the clean pin...

Powell's POV: A forgettable match. Sure, Sky performed a new move or two and the effort was there, but it was still clunky. Worse yet, the live crowd didn't seem to care once the ass shaking stopped and the bell rang.

Backstage, Bischoff warmed up by hitting padded gloves that Jarrett was wearing. Bischoff praised Jarrett for "apologizing" to Kurt Angle, and questioned whether Jarrett would apologize to Samoa Joe. Jarrett asked him whether Hogan would apologize. "Nah," Bischoff responded... [C]

A Turning Point pay-per-view ad was shown...
Backstage, Ric Flair told the bickering Kazarian and Douglas Williams that he wanted to settle it Horseman style by having them work a match against one another. They both agreed. After the rest of Fortune split, Christy Hemme tried to interview Williams, but her mic wasn't working. A Mr. Anderson style mic dropped from the ceiling instead...

2. Mickie James and Ink Inc. defeated Tara and Generation Me in 5:45. The heels isolated Jesse Neal and worked him over in the corner when the referee wasn't looking.

[Q4] Tara got involved with the men a couple of times and broke up Shannon Moore's pin attempt at one point. Mickie ran in and pounded her with a series of punches. Mickie superkicked Max Buck and then Ink Inc. hit him with their finisher to get the win. After the match, the heels attacked the face team from behind to get their heat back...

Powell's POV: I remain convinced that The Farmer's Daughter look isn't a wise move for Mickie. Generation Me are made to look weaker every week. Some guys can get away with selling a kick from Mickie, but Generation Me isn't there because they've never been established as tough guys in TNA.

A "specialist" interviewed Orlando Jordan and Eric Young. Young said he should talk first since he's the leader. Jordan complained that he's always been on top (get it). The bad comedy continued with Young talking about all the partners he's had in his life, but nothing has felt this good...

Powell's POV: Minor league and not the least bit funny to anyone who doesn't hang out with Eric Young backstage.

Jeff Jarrett was shown walking backstage. Tenay said he was coming to the ring. Dumbass Tenay asked if Jarrett would do the right thing by apologizing to Samoa Joe... [C]

Powell's POV: Apparently, Tenay hasn't been paying attention to the angles he's involved in. I know he's playing a part, but is there any reason why he would suspect Jarrett's character might do the right thing?

A video aired of Team 3D and the Motor City Machine Guns talking about their match and having a good time. The Guns put over Team 3D for blazing the trail. Team 3D spoke about how they'll be sleeping with the TNA Tag Title belts. "May the best in the world win," Chris Sabin said and everyone else agreed...

Powell's POV: It wasn't particularly effective, but at least they're thinking outside the box and trying to promote the match in an untraditional manner.

A video package recapped Jeff Jarrett's attacks on Samoa Joe and Matt Morgan... Jeff Jarrett came to the ring for a promo and badmouthed Kurt Angle for "running around like a thief in the night."

[Q5] Jarrett turned his attention to Samoa Joe and said he would face him at Turning Point. Jarrett said he probably has the advantage since Joe is recovering for his fall, but good guys, which he used to be, always come back. Jarrett told the fans not to chant "You sold out" at him because "I bought in."

Jarrett walked up the ramp and played to the fans. Suddenly, Joe broke through the entrance ramp and attacked Jarrett. Joe took Jarrett to the ring and roughed him up. Security guys Gunner and Murphy ran out to save Jarrett. Joe attacked security and Jarrett ran off. The security guys recovered and jumped Joe, who eventually cleared one from the ring and hit the Muscle Buster on the other...

Powell's POV: Jarrett's promo was routine and cliche. Joe emerging from the stage was kind of cool, but I would have saved that for a big surprise moment rather than just a routine "Joe is back after missing a show.

Backstage, Rob Van Dam said people shouldn't be surprised if he looks out for himself since he doesn't know who is his brother and who is not. He said he's angry... [C]

A shot aired of Eric Bischoff stretching out backstage...

3. A.J. Styles defeated Rob Van Dam and Rhino to retain the TNA TV Title in 3:45. Rather than discuss the title match, the announcers spent time bickering about Bischoff. They eventually settled into calling the match.

[Q6] Van Dam caught Styles with a kick that sent him to ringside. RVD did his thumb bit. He started to climb the ropes, but Rhino stopped him. RVD and Rhino argued until Styles springboarded off the ropes onto both of them. Styles rolled up RVD and got the pin.

Van Dam and Rhino continued to argue until the rest of EV2 hit the ring. Cue the crickets. Dreamer told RVD that it was enough and he can't understand why he doesn't trust him. RVD said Dreamer is the leader and questioned what Dreamer has to hide since he's so concerned about him finding out the truth.

Dreamer said Van Dam needs his head fixed. "I say we go old school," Dreamer said. He said it would be RVD vs. Dreamer at Turning Point. RVD told Dreamer to tell his man Bischoff that the match as on. Taz said he was surprised...

Powell's POV: Disappointing all around. The match was forgettable and served as nothing more than a way to establish that Van Dam is paranoid. It wouldn't bother me so much if they had given us more in-ring action and some type of hype for the TV Title match. The belt means just as little as it did when Booker T introduced it as his little, red, toy belt. Either make the belt matter or throw it away. Meanwhile, Van Dam seems to be the only guy in EV2 getting any type of a crowd response.

Backstage, Abyss said Immortal will live forever just like Hulkamania. He said he's going to snatch Pope's congregation one by one...

Powell's POV: Go away for six months and maybe then people can pretend to forget how lousy your character has become.

Ric Flair joined the announcers on commentary...

4. Kazarian defeated Douglas Williams in 4:05. Beer Money came to ringside during the opening minute. Flair said he couldn't believe Kazarian went "unseen for so long" when he first saw him, and then told a joke about "career suicide" (plays on the Suicide character).

[Q7] After four minutes of solid wrestling that the fans didn't respond to because they were given no incentive to cheer either man, Williams was thrown into James Storm, who was standing on the ring apron for no good reason. Kazarian rolled up Williams and pinned him.

Afterward, Williams was pissed about Storm standing on the ring apron and costing him the match. A "We want Morgan" chant broke out. Flair wanted Williams and Kazarian to shake hands. They eventually complied...

A pre-tape aired with D'Angelo Dinero hyping his match against Abyss... [C]

Powell's POV: Williams wrestles stablemate Kazarian, and RVD is wrestling stablemate Dreamer. Does TNA realize that they're telling the same story within the same feud? Maybe it will all come together on Sunday. Yes, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.

More footage aired of the Orlando Jordan and Eric Young therapy session. Jordan "came out" and admitted that he's bi. Young assumed he meant bipolar...

Powell's POV: Amateur hour garbage.

5. D'Angelo Dinero fought Abyss to an apparent no-contest in 3:00. Pope rushed to the ring and got the better of an early brawl with Abyss. However, Abyss came right back with a shot to Pope's taped ribs. Abyss went to ringside and stood face to face with a fan who was jawing with him. He looked at the fan and then pie-faced the guy next to him.

[Q8] Abyss started beating up planted fans in the crowd. D-Lo Brown, Al Snow, and security came out to stop him. Pope took the mic and said that if Abyss wanted to beat up members of his congregation, they could have a lumberjack match at the pay-per-view. Pope said the lumberjacks will all be members of Pope's congregation.

Abyss said he would never speak for Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff, but he doesn't think they'll mind in this case. He said the match is on... [C]

Powell's POV: If Dinero's character cared about his congregation so much, wouldn't he run to ringside and beat the hell out of Abyss rather than challenge him to a match "three days from now"? Seriously, that was ridiculous.

Robbie E and Cookie delivered a backstage promo about Robbie's match with Jay Lethal at the pay-per-view... The announcers discussed the pay-per-view... A Turning Point pay-per-view video showcased the various matches...

Backstage, Eric Bischoff walked by a cameraman and said someone was going to get their ass kicked one way or the other. After Bischoff was gone, the cameraman could be heard saying: "Hey, watch it, man. Asshole"... [C]

A Jeff Hardy video/promo aired. He said he's let a lot of people down and that doesn't matter because there's no turning back now. "Celebrate the anti-Christ of professional wrestling," Hardy said. "Celebrate Jeff Hardy"...

Powell's POV: Cool video. Slick production. Does it make sense that the top heel (apparently next to Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff) has the coolest pieces on the show?

Eric Bischoff came to the ring wearing his gi. He ordered ring announcer Jeremy Bischoff to read a prepared introduction for his match. Borash complied and introduced Bischoff as having four percent body fat and having a 34-0 record with all wins coming via TKO. Funny.

[Overrun] Borash continued to read the prepared introduction as he introduced Mr. Anderson as being from the "frozen inbred tundra of Green Bay." Nice. He was also introduced as "the pussy willow of Wisconsin" and "the President Obama of head trauma." Borash stopped and said it was ridiculous because he wasn't there. The fans chanted, "Read it." Funny.

Bischoff took offense. He said everyone knows that Anderson isn't in the building, but the fans came to see a match. He suggested Bischoff vs. Borash. Bischoff struck Borash in the gut and then knocked him over. Bischoff hovered over Borash and started throwing punches.

The lights went out and Mr. Anderson's entrance theme and video played. With Bischoff facing the entrance, Matt Morgan appeared behind him and delivered the "Anderson" line to followup on Anderson's entrance music.

6. Matt Morgan pinned Eric Bischoff. Morgan drilled Anderson with the Carbon Footprint and pinned him.

TNA Reaction

Morgan picked up the open contract that Bischoff brought to the ring just in case Anderson beat him and signed it. Morgan told Bischoff to tell Hardy that he'd see him on Sunday at the pay-per-view.

Ric Flair came to the ring and cut a promo on Morgan, who had already headed backstage. Flair said Morgan would bleed, sweat, and pay the price when he faces Hardy at the pay-per-view. Flair helped Bischoff get to his feet..

Powell's POV: Does this mean the overseas viewers have no clue what the pay-per-view main event is since they don't get TNA Reaction? I hope TNA was wise enough to edit that so it goes on the overseas television show. The final segment was fun. The introduction that Borash read for Bischoff was filled with some fun lines and Morgan's boot to the head looked good. Maybe I'm thinking too hard, but why would Bischoff even go through the trouble of bringing a real open contract if Anderson wasn't going to be there?

Unfortunately, the match between Hardy and Morgan doesn't have a lot of steam simply because it had to be booked on the fly. Morgan has heat with Fortune and Bischoff, not Hardy. I am curious to see how the live crowd reacts to the two wrestlers since both are newly turned.

The bulk of the show was flat and didn't get me excited about the various pay-per-view matches. It was a weak go-home show with the exception of the final segment. I'll have more to say about the show on Friday in the TNA Impact Hitlist. Thanks for watching along with me tonight.
