7/15 Powell's TNA Impact Live Coverage: Big angle, Jeff Hardy vs. Jay Lethal, Motor City Machine Guns vs. Beer Money, Matt Morgan vs. D'Angelo Dinero, Victory Road fallout
Jul 15, 2010 - 10:00 PM

By Jason Powell

TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped at Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla.

[Q1] The show opened with a video recap of the TNA Victory Road pay-per-view... The show is called "They're Here?"... Mike Tenay plugged a few matches for the show...

The new TNA rankings (from 10-1): Rob Terry, The Pope, Kurt Angle, Hernandez, A.J. Styles, Jay Lethal, Samoa Joe, Mr. Anderson, Jeff Hardy, and Abyss is the top contender...

Abyss came to the ring with the weapon he can't use without killing someone and a big piece of meat. He referred to the weapon as Janice. "She's beautiful, she's tall, she's sophisticated, she's sexy, and she's sharp," he said regarding the weapon. He used the weapon to beat the meat. He addressed Rob Van Dam throughout the interview and said he was awaiting final instructions from "them"...

Powell's POV: Yes, Abyss just beat his meat on national television. In all seriousness, Janice is the name of Dixie Carter's mother, so I'm guessing that inspired the name of Abyss's weapon.

Backstage, Taylor Wilde and Sarita were brawling. Sarita yelled at Taylor when she was in control. I think she said something about BJ's and a jacuzzi. Wait, wrong audio. They cut to commercial with Sarita in control of the brawl... [C]

After the break, Taylor and Sarita were brawling in the arena. Tenay and Taz said this is their official street fight, so apparently it started during the break...

[Q2] 1. Sarita defeated Taylor Wilde in a street fight. After a long brawl at ringside, Sarita climbed on the ring apron and leapt toward Taylor on the floor, only to have a chair thrown at her. They continued to brawl on the floor. Sarita used a fan's purse to choke Taylor. I'll bet it belongs to the guy wearing the shades. The ref called for the bell due to Taylor being choked out...

Powell's POV: Do we even know why they're pissed at each other? I see this sort of behavior before around my house once a month for a few days and then things go back to normal.

Backstage, Rob Van Dam spoke about Abyss beating his meat. He said he had a hell of a weapon, and he wants to see if Abyss is ready to use it tonight... [C]

Backstage, Miss Teschmacher yelled at someone on the phone and said the person will be the first to go once she's in charge. Kevin Nash showed up for a meeting with Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff. She said they had a last minute thing come up. Nash teased leaving and then came back and told her to pen him in for 10:00 p.m.

2. Brian Kendrick defeated Douglas Williams in a non-title, I Quit match. Tenay hyped the best of five series between Beer Money and the Motor City Machine Guns. The ref carried a mic and asked the wrestlers if they wanted to quit at various points in the match.

[Q3] At 3:45, Williams reached inside his pants and pulled out the glove he used at the pay-per-view to climb the Ultimate X wires. He slapped Kendrick with it and then put it on for lord knows what reason. Kendrick came back and applied the Cobra Clutch submission hold. Williams yelled he quit to end the match.

After the match, Kevin Nash came to the ring and took a mic briefly. Kendrick yelled at him, so Nash picked him up and chokeslammed him. Nash took the mic and said he's tired of Hogan and Bischoff dodging him. He said that when he dies, he'll never be replaced.

Nash was about to powerbombomb Kendrick when Jeff Jarrett came to the ring and told him to relax. Jarrett said Nash has a personal issue with Hogan and Bischoff just like Sting does. Nash said he just came out to make sure he has the attention of Bischoff and Hogan.

Jarrett called Nash a glory hound and said he's an egotistical son of a bitch. Nash questioned why Jarrett is sticking up for Hogan and Bischoff. He said that if Jarrett wants trouble with him, he has it. Nash left the ring... [C]

Powell's POV: Very odd to have a non-title "I Quit" match on television. That seems like more of a feud ending style match to me. It was decent while it lasted. Kendrick got a rare win and then Nash had to come out and deliver the message that Kendrick is just a meaningless little X Division bitch. Thanks for the reminder, TNA creative.

Backstage, Nash pointed out that Hogan and Bischoff came in and took over the company from Jarrett, yet he's defending them. Nash said he'd probably have all the answers he needs around 10:00 p.m. tonight...

Powell's POV: The "meeting" is at ten, yet Nash expects to have all the answers he needs at the same time? He works quick. Embellish a little and say 10:15.

[Q4] 3. Samoa Joe defeated Desmond Wolfe (w/Chelsea) and Rob Terry in 4:15. Magnus sat in on commentary and said the action between Joe and Wolfe looked like "Gorillas in the Mist." In the end, Joe applied the rear naked choke on Wolfe for the win. Afterward, Joe and Terry stood face to face. Joe slapped him on the shoulder and left the ring, as the announcers said it was an endorsement from Joe... [C]

Powell's POV: Decent match. They didn't really establish a reason for the match or why the Global Championship wasn't on the line unless I missed it. Magnus has a beard and did a nice job on commentary. Magnus is very charismatic and has a bright future, assuming he continues to improve in the ring.

Backstage, Ric Flair said that he will make an announcement that will begin to make history and help TNA become bigger. "Do you know why I'm doing that?" Flair asked. "Because I'm Ric Flair and I can"...

Highlights aired of The Guns beating Beer Money to win the tag titles at the pay-per-view...

4. Beer Money defeated The Motor City Machine Guns in a ladder match in 9:15. This is part of a best of five series between the two teams. Tenay pointed out that they were competing to get a contract that will allow the winning team to dictate the terms of the second of their five matches.

[Q5] In the end, Chris Sabin made it to the contract and pulled it down, which should have given The Guns the win. However, referee Earl Hebner was bumped and didn't see it. James Storm smashed a beer bottle over Sabin's head and took the contract. Hebner came to and saw Storm with the contract and gave the win to Beer Money...

Powell's POV: My match description doesn't do this one justice. There was some really good action in there with some innovative ladder spots. I'd have to write three pages of material to keep up with the various spots. Very entertaining match. It would have been nice to hear from the new champs beforehand. It does seem odd that they had The Guns win the titles before the best of five. It would have been more appealing to his viewer if Beer Money were the champions and The Guns were chasing during the best of five. Of course, there's more than one way to skin a cat, so we'll see how it goes.

Backstage, Abyss revealed that he's actually the old comedian Gallagher by smashing a watermelon with the weapon he can't use because it would kill someone... [C]

5. D'Angelo Dinero pinned Matt Morgan in 1:40. Morgan jumped out to the early advantage, but Pope hit the DDE and scored the clean pin. Morgan attacked him right after the bell to get his heat back. Morgan knocked Pope to ringside with the Carbon Footprint.

[Q6] Morgan set up Pope for the boot to the head against the ring post, but he stopped when Mr. Anderson's music played. Anderson came out in street clothes and threw Pope in the ring. Anderson teased attacking Pope, but instead punched Morgan and put the boots to him.

Once Morgan was out of the picture, Anderson picked up a chair and teased hitting Pope, but dropped it and offered his hand instead. Pope was reluctant and gave him a nod instead...

Powell's POV: I like the way they addressed the fact that a heel Anderson was responsible for Pope's injury from a storyline standpoint. It was a nice touch to have Anderson attempt to make amends, and even better that Pope didn't give in right away simply because they're both babyfaces.

Backstage, Lacey Von Erich tried to calm down Velvet Sky, who was pissed off at Madison Rayne for acting "high and mighty." Velvet said Madison plans to bring a fourth person into the group without talking to them about it...

The announcers hyped Jeff Hardy vs. Jay Lethal for later in the show... [C]

Madison Rayne stood in the center of the ring and said she is protesting the decision to disqualify her and hand over the TNA Knockouts Title to Angelina Love at the pay-per-view. The stipulation was that if another member of The Beautiful People interfered, she would be DQ'd and lose the title. She said that didn't happen.

Madison threatened to sue TNA for every penny that it's worth (insert your own joke here). Velvet Sky and Lacey Von Erich came to the ring. Velvet was pissed and asked why she invited someone to join their group without asking them. Madison accused her of taking "dumb blonde pills again." Velvet said Madison must have overdosed on hers.

Lacey stood in the middle and tried to place peacemaker. Velvet threatened to kick Madison's ass. Angelina Love walked onto the stage and questioned whether the bitches on "The Hills" or the bitches in the ring are worse actors. Angelina accused Velvet of driving the motorcycle at the PPV and said we'd recognize her fake boobs anywhere.

Velvet said she's never been so disgusted. She said the mystery woman had a dumpy ass, so it couldn't have been her. Velvet pointed to Madison and said: "This bitch is all yours. I'm out." Velvet and Lacey left the ring together. Madison demanded that Love come to the ring and give her the title back.

[Q7] Angelina headed to the ring. Madison punched Love, which led to Love jumping on her and hitting her. The mystery woman drove the motorcycle to the ring and attacked Love. Madison set a chair in the ring and DDT'd Love onto it as the mystery woman cheered. The mystery woman and Madison drove away together... [C]

Powell's POV: For those who missed it, the mystery woman is Tara, who is back in TNA. The segment dragged on, but I'm really impressed by how comfortable Madison is on the mic. She looked out of place early in her title run, but she's really coming into her own on the mic.

6. Jeff Hardy beat Jay Lethal in 4:25. The ECW faction of Raven, Tommy Dreamer, Stevie Richards, and Rhino walked through the crowd and took their usual spot in the crowd. Tenay announced Beer Money has opted to face MCMG in a street fight, and Kurt Angle will face Hernandez next week. In the end, Hardy hit the Swanton and scored a clean pin on Lethal...

A shot aired of Abyss walking backstage...

Powell's POV: The announcers tried to give Lethal an excuse by saying the letdown factor was at play following his dream match against Ric Flair at the pay-per-view. Nice sports comparison, but I don't understand why they would go out of their way to make Lethal look strong by having him beat Flair only to lose clean in a short match to Hardy. Perhaps it's part of Lethal's next storyline.

[Q8] [C] After the break, Ric Flair stood in the ring with A.J. Styles and Kazarian. Flair introduced Styles and Kazarian as the first two members of Fortune. Desmond Wolfe came out and said he deserved credit for helping them at the pay-per-view, but Flair blew him off.

Abyss's music played and he headed to the ring with the weapon named after Dixie Carter's mother. Flair and company left the ring. Abyss took the mic and said, "RVD, come to me." Van Dam's music played. RVD came out and walked to the ring with the TNA Title draped over his shoulder.

Abyss told Van Dam that it was time for him to share the plan that "they" have for him. Abyss said "they are coming to TNA" very soon. He said "they" will take TNA over. He said "they" want Abyss to pave the way for them by taking the TNA Title off RVD. Abyss said he wants to hang his weapon above the ring and then have the most extreme match in the history of wrestling.

Abyss claimed his weapon wants a piece of RVD's ass. "How about you and me get extreme," Abyss asked. RVD took the mic and said the TNA Title belongs to him. "You know what I really love about being the World Champion?" RVD asked. "Whenever I'm faced with a monstrous challenge like you."

RVD hit Abyss with the TNA Title belt. They fought in the ring. Van Dam went for a monkey flip in the corner, but Abyss fought him off and chokeslammed him. Abyss went to the corner and grabbed his weapon.

Mick Foley walked onto the stage and smiled at Abyss. The ECW faction hit the ring. Dreamer, Rhino, Raven, and Richards attacked Abyss in the ring. TNA security jogged to the ring only to be laid out by the ECW faction. Douglas Williams, Magnus, and Okada hit the ring, but they were thrown out.

Desmond Wolfe and Brian Kendrick ran out, but they were also outnumbered. D-Lo Brown and Terry Taylor entered the ring and tried to calm down the ECW faction, but they were also roughed up. Pat Kenney and Al Snow came out and ended up helping their fellow ECW alums.

Jay Lethal, Eric Young, and Matt Morgan came out and fought the ECW crew. Pope was also in the ring, so I missed his entrance. Devon ran out and helped the ECW faction. Jeff Jarrett tried to calm everyone down. A shot aired of Dixie Carter sitting i the stand with a concerned look on her face.

Dixie Carter stood up at ringside with a mic in hand and said: "Stop. Stop." She stood on the entrance ramp. "Listen to me," she said. "Stop it. Listen. I invited them. I invited them." Jeff Jarrett and other TNA wrestlers looked at her with surprised looks on their faces...

Powell's POV: Lots of commotion with a decent cliffhanger from Dixie at the end. Fans of the ECW crew will be happy with this development, but this was nowhere near as hot as the initial Nexus attack on Raw. It's hard not to compare the two. In fairness to the TNA angle, I've been hearing about it since Monday night, so it lacked the element of surprise for me that the Nexus angle had.

Overall, this was an entertaining two-hour show. I was most encouraged by the fact that Abyss didn't annoy me as much as he had been. His delivery is getting better and I hope they eliminate the neurotic laugh from his promos once and for all. There were some strange bookings choices, but I enjoyed the bulk of the show even though the ECW faction does nothing for me in 2010. I'll have more to say on Friday in the TNA Impact Hitlist.
