5/1 Twilling's TNA Impact Live Coverage: Joe and Angle vs. Steiner and Petey, Deuce's Wild Tournament
By Rich Twilling May 1, 2008 - 08:00 PM

TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped 4/28 in Orlando, FL

[Q1] A recap video aired including all of the TNA storylines; Deuce’s Wild, the new gimmick match, and the TNA Championship three-way at the PPV.

The opening video aired and Mike Tenay immediately plugged tonight’s main event of Samoa Joe and Kurt Angle vs. Scott Steiner and Petey Williams. Don West hyped the show further.

1. The Motor City Machine Guns fought Curry Man and Sharkboy to a no contest in 5:20. Crowd was into this match immediately. The Guns hit a double suplex, followed by multiple leg drops at about 1:15. Curry Man took over. Sharkboy tagged in and isolated Sabin.

At 2:20, Sharkboy hit a second rope hurricarana. Curryman came in and hit a knee to a rope crotched Sabin. Sabin was able to hot tag Shelley, as he proceeded to clear the ring. He hit a double DDT on both opponents.

The Guns cleared the ring and then hit a double suicide dive to the outside as the fans showed their support. Out of nowhere, Scott Steiner’s music hit and he came out with Petey and Rhaka Khan.

Petey hit the Canadian Destroyer on Sharkboy. Steiner got on the microphone and stumbled through a promo punking out Kurt Angle. He said he was going take Angle’s gold medal and make him his bitch.

Angle immediately came out and took Steiner down. He cleared the ring of Petey and applied the Ankle Lock on Steiner. Petey came in and hit Angle with a steel pipe.

Steiner applied the Steiner Recliner. Samoa Joe was on his way to the ring, and then his music hit, and he cleared the ring of Steiner and Petey. Angle looked on in disbelief.

Backstage, Jeremy Borash told A.J. Styles that Jim Cornette told him that Styles needed to find a partner or he would be disqualified from the tournament. Cornette came out and made Styles look like a dumbass. He told him again he would forfeit his match tonight if he did not find a partner… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Wow, a lot went on there. This is yet another example of how quickly TNA books things. Angle did not need to come out yet. Steiner could have ended the segment with his promo. As for the match, it is difficult to make the tournament look important when a “main eventer” breaks it up.

[Q2] Back from commercial, West plugged all of tonight’s matches at about 100 miles per hour.

Tenay, standing in the middle of the ring, introduced Angelina Love and Velvet Sky. West sold the battle royale at Sacrifice. He explained the rules to everyone in case they were not aware yet.

This battle royale makes no sense. If you finish ahead of everyone but one person, you fight for the chance to wrestle Awesome Kong for the title, but if you lose, you get shaved bald.

The ladies gave somewhat of a promo, showing two potential bald Knockouts. Gail Kim and ODB came down to the ring. ODB grabbed the microphone, said something, and the babyfaces pushed the heels down, starting a brawl. The heels retreated up the ramp.

ODB challenged Love and Sky to a match and said, “You’ll be in your favorite position, on your back.”…

Backstage, Styles and JB looked for a partner. He ran into Kurt Angle, who told him to stay away from Karen. Styles went into Booker T’s locker room. Booker asked if Styles was someone’s little brother and if he had a pass. Ugh. Styles listed his title accomplishments. Booker kicked them out… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: The Knockout segment produced a match for later, but just like the X Division, TNA has something special with their women’s division, and this whole battle royale seems to be dumbing it down.

Back from commercial, Samoa Joe was interviewed, with Nash holding the belt behind him, and said he was looking forward to Angle being involved in the championship match at Sacrifice…

[Q3] 2. LAX (with Salinas) defeated Eric Young and Kaz in 5:24. Don West explained the reasoning behind the tournament, sort of. They did not start calling the match until Young took a beating and tagged in Kaz.

Kaz hit a series of moves for the first nearfall at 1:12. Kaz hit a huge dropkick on Homicide, but outside interference by Hernandez allowed Homicide to hit a Northern Lights Suplex.

The crowd got behind LAX and even booed Kaz a bit. Crowd is hot tonight. Hernandez hit a sit down powerbomb, but Young broke up the pin attempt at 3:30. LAX continued to hit double team moves on Kaz.

Homicide came off the top rope, with Kaz on Hernandez’s shoulders. The move looked botched; Kaz hit a scissors kick. Young came in and cleaned house. Homicide and Young had a short exchange, before Homicide rolled up Young for the victory.

After the match, the teams exchanged fist bumps as West put over the sportsmanship of both teams. Homicide got on the stick and called Hector Guerrero to the ring. The show went to commercial as Guerrero headed to the ring… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: Forgetful match, but at least the right team won. I do not like the “surprise babyface rollup finish,” but if LAX ends up with the belts, maybe they can turn heel then. They used to be a very cool act, but they need direction.

Back from commercial, LAX stood in the ring with Hector Guerrero. Homicide said they have studied Eddie Guerrero for years, as well as the entire Guerrero Familia. An “Eddie” chant broke out, followed by a “Hector” chant.

Homicide said he respected Hector and the entire Guerrero family. He told Hector he wanted him to be in the corner of LAX at Sacrifice. Hector agreed as the four celebrated in the middle of the ring…

[Q4] Backstage, Cornette and Traci Brooks were having a discussion. Matt Morgan came in and Cornette did not want to hear what he had to say. Kip James entered and a brawl ensued between Morgan and James… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: I like the idea of Hector with LAX. I never understood why everyone felt LAX needed a mouthpiece, because Homicide has always been great on the mic when given the chance.

Back from commercial, Styles knocked on Kevin Nash’s door. Nash was telling stories to Christy Hemme. Hemme told Styles “We’re gonna rock you tonight baby, Woooo.” Styles told Nash there was big money in them being tag champs.

Nash said the big money was in being the heavyweight champion. JB said Joe was the champion. Nash responded with, “Damn right he is, damn right he is,” before he walked off…

Twill’s Two Cents: I hate how Styles has been booked over the past year or so. I like the intrigue with Nash here.

3. ODB and Gail Kim defeated Angelina Love and Velvet Sky in 4:35. West sold the division by saying all four women want the title. Tenay wondered if one of these four would get their head shaved as the crowd chanted, “ODB, ODB.”

ODB started with Love, but nothing really happened until Sky and Kim tagged in. Kim hit a closeline, dropkick, and bodyslam, before giving Love a shot on the apron. Kim was crotched on the ropes by both Love and Sky. Sky had a cover on Kim as the show went to commercial… [C]

[Q5] Back from commercial, the heels were on the offensive. Kim scored a few surprise nearfalls at 6:20, but Love herself scored a nearfall before a double closeline grounded both women.

ODB came in an hit Sky with sledgehammers before hitting a fallaway slam on Love. She hit a middle rope Thesz Press for a nearfall. In the ring, ODB hit a running powerslam on Sky for the victory.

After the match, Love came in an attacked both babyfaces from behind. However, Kim and ODB outnumbered her, but Love retreated before any more damage could happen. Roxxi Laveaux came in to give the babyfaces the advantage. She gave Love a VooDoo Bomb…

Backstage, JB was with a drunk James Storm and a calm Robert Roode. Styles came in and said he needed a partner. Physicality took place as Roode got in Styles’ face and told him no.

Styles was desperate and wondered with JB what he was going to do. They saw someone off camera and Styles smiled and asked if he would be his partner… [C]

Back from commercial, the new “Cross the Line” commercial aired again. Booker T. sounds hilarious in this. Tenay plugged the tournament match and wondered who Styles found as his partner.

4. A.J. Styles and Super Eric defeated The Rock N’ Rave Infection (with Christy Hemme) in 5:26. Seriously, will someone take that silly crown off of him? This is a former Heavyweight Champion Champion of the World.

Super Eric came out as Styles’ partner. Crowd chanted for him. Styles started and was worked over by both opponents. A distraction by Hemme at 2:35 allowed Rave to hit a huge closeline. Styles continued to find himself on the receiving end of the punishment. Lance played him like a guitar. Cute.

[Q6] An “A.J. Styles” chant broke out. Super Eric was tagged in and he cleared the ring. Eric had both men in the corner. Later, Styles was backdropped by Young into a hurricarana. Nice. After the ring was cleared, Young scored the pinfall victory.

Twill’s Two Cents: Is anyone else taking this seriously? I did not think so. Nash was right, the money is with the Heavyweight Title, and Styles deserves more.

Backstage, JB interviewed Sting. Sting has never been a good promo. He said something about not trusting anyone and how he needed to find out what was up Cornette’s sleeve… [C]

Back from commerical, Tenay talked about what separated TNA from the competition. He plugged the six-sided ring. West talked about Ultimate X and Elevation X. This led to the promotional video of “Terror Dome.” It will be unveiled at Sacrifice.

5. Cheerleader Melissa defeated Daisy Haze in 2:25. Tenay and West sort of put over the two by saying, “TNA is looking for new talent.” Of course, we all know they have it with these two women.

Haze hit two hurricaranas, but Melissa took over using her brute strength. A “Let’s Go Melissa” chant broke out. Seemingly out of nowhere, Melissa scored the victory. They abruptly cut backstage to Steiner and his crew.

Twill’s Two Cents: Tenay and West put over everything but this match. You have two potential huge female stars and you give them two minutes, with the announcers barely talking about them. Nice booking.

Steiner talked about a lot of mathematics. He spewed off a bunch of percents and ended up with saying he had a 141% chance of winning the title at Sacrifice. Steiner called Joe a fatass. He said he was going to be the champion after Sacrifice… [C]

6. Samoa Joe and Kurt Angle defeated Scott Steiner and Petey Williams in 10:32. Does anyone else think Petey looks like a jackass? Well, at least he is in the main event and we got to see the Destroyer.

Joe started with Petey. Petey tried a springboard crossbody, but Joe walked away as if he was uninterested. Joe tagged in Angle. You have three main eventers here and Petey Williams. That has to be a good thing for Petey, right?

Steiner came in and hit Angle with forearms and chops. Angle hit a nice overhead belly to belly suplex. Angle and Joe worked well together here. Petey blindly tagged in and began to work over Joe as the show went to commercial… [C]

Tenay welcomed us back at Steiner hit a big closeline on Joe. Looks like the champion took the brunt of the punishment over the break. Petey tagged in and Steiner’s illegal maneuver from the apron allowed Petey to keep the advantage.

[Q8] Steiner tagged in and Joe had a brief comeback attempt thwarted by Steiner, who hit a nice double underhook belly to belly suplex. Both men worked each other over before Petey tagged in. He jumped from the top but Joe put up his boot.

Angle wanted to tag a tired Joe, but Joe flipped him off and beat the crap out of the heel team, including a snap powerslam on Petey. Angle came in and closelined Steiner over the top rope.

Angle attacked Joe from behind. Joe and Angle fought before Joe was able to get rid of him. He then hit the Muscle Buster on Petey for the pinfall victory.

After the match, Angle hit a released German Suplex on on Joe. He locked in the Ankle Lock. Steiner came in with the pipe. Angle retreated from the ring and Steiner knocked out Joe with the pipe. Steiner’s music played as Steiner and Petey celebrated in the ring.

Backstage, JB interviewed Cornette. Cornette said he was about to “shock the world.”… [C]

Twill’s Two Cents: I was wondering when Joe and Angle were going to go at it. I am surprised it took them that long to get the three main eventers in the spotlight.

Back from commercial, in case you just began to tune in, they showed a replay of what just happened with Joe, Angle, and Steiner, with Steiner standing over Joe with the TNA World Heavyweight Championship.

Cornette stood in the middle of the ring. He said four teams have already qualified for the tournament. He said eight wrestlers would be randomly paired to make up the other four teams.

Twill’s Two Cents: Anyone else fed up with this? By the way, if this was such a “shocking” announcement, how could all of the competitors be ready to come out to the ring when they are announced?

In order, Cornette brought out Matt Morgan, Kip James, B.G. James, Cowboy James Storm, Booker T., Robert Roode, and Sting. Cornette thought he was finished, but he forgot one more participant.

Since Sting apparently is not that important, he announced the eighth competitor who could become one half of the next TNA Tag Team Champions would be….. the TNA Knockouts Champion, Awesome Kong. The other seven looked in disbelief as Tenay screamed about it and the show went off the air…

Twill’s Two Cents: Whew. This is a case of a lot of good and a lot of bad. TNA has always been about distinct divisions, from the X Division, to the Knockout’s Division, and the Tag Team Division. I like the main event attention the tag teams are getting. However, this tournament is a mess. They do not need to reinvent the wheel here; they should put the titles on a great team, like LAX, and have other great teams feud with them. Simple as that.

I know Kurt Angle wanted to wrestle Awesome Kong when he was champion, but she cannot be presented as a legitimate threat to the men. If she is, then every Knockout who has a competitive match with her should also be a threat to the men and we all know Kong is the only one who could even have a remote possibility of hanging with the male wrestlers. It just kills the mystique of the Knockout’s Division.

What did you think of the show? Feedback is appreciated and welcome. Rich Twilling can be reached at dotnetrich@gmail.com.
