2/14 TNA Impact Live Coverage: A.J. Styles marries Karen Angle
By Jason Powell Feb 14, 2008 - 08:00 PM |
|
TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped in Orlando, Fla.
[Q1] A video package recapped the pay-per-view... Jeremy Borash met Karen Angle and her daughter as they exited a white limo. Karen was dressed in her bridal gown. Eric Young entered the scene and tried to talk with Borash about his match against Rellik. “That’s killer spelled backwards,” Young said. Karen said Borash is busy tonight because he’s going to be her maid of honor... The opening montage aired... Mike Tenay and Don West introduced the show...
Jim Cornette stood in the middle of the ring and said he was there to sign Samoa Joe to a new contract. Samoa Joe joined Cornette in the ring. Cornette handed over the contract and turned around so that Joe could press the contract against his back and sign it. Joe was about to sign the deal when Christian’s music stopped him. Christian walked out and asked Joe to be his partner in a match against Tomko and A.J. Styles. Joe told Christian that his title chase is over. He said Corny had already promised him the next title match. Even so, Joe agreed to team with Christian. They shook hands and Christian left the ring. Corny said it was time to take care of business. Joe said he needed to take care of personal business and then maybe he would consider taking care of TNA business...
Backstage, Crystal interviewed Tomko, who said he didn’t need Christian to be a star. He complained about Christian interfering in his last match against Kurt Angle. “Finally and forever, me and Christian Cage are over.” Crystal asked where he stood with the Angle Alliance. Tomko said he planned to “have a little chit-chat” with Angle... [Commercial]
Powell’s POV: Tomko’s attacking Christian in the main event was positioned as a major event at the end of the pay-per-view on Sunday. TNA should have continued to make a big fuss out of this week by building up to an in-ring interview with Tomko. It just came off as something they snuck in before the commercial break.
[Q2] Backstage, Crystal informed Styles that he and Tomko would be defending the tag titles against Joe and Christian. He said this was already the worst night of his life because Karen is renewing her vows. Kurt overheard and asked A.J. to repeat himself. Styles said it was nothing. After Kurt left the room, Styles stood up and said, “He’s marrying my woman”...
1. Brother Devon (w/Brother Ray) beat Curry Man and Shark Boy in a handicap match at 3:32. Before the match, Earl Hebner came out and weighed Devon to make sure that he was under the 275-pound weight limit that is now in effect because of their pay-per-view loss. Devon made the limit. Bubba stood on the scale and flashed a big smile. Funny. Hebner told him he was “way, way over” the limit and ruled that Devon must work a handicap match. In the end, Ray hit Curry Man with the scale and Devon pinned him...
Powell’s POV: The weight gimmick was humorous this week. Bubba’s smile was great. However, I thought they were going back to being the killer heel Dudleys when they attacked the X Division guys recently?
Crystal approached Booker T, who was sitting on a chair outside the building. He said he was waiting for Robert Roode... [C]
[Q3] A Rellik vignette aired... The announcers previewed the show... Highlights aired of the Abyss vs. Judas Mesias barbwire match...
Scott Steiner, who was accompanied by “his latest freak” (the woman who interfered on his behalf at the pay-per-view), came out for a match. Abyss came out to his entrance music. He walked up the ring steaps, but turned around and walked back up the ramp. With his back facing the audience, he removed his mask, dropped it, and headed backstage. The live crowd booed... [C] Steiner introduced his freak as “Rocka Khan.” He issued an open challenge. Petey Williams walked onto the stage and took Steiner up on his challenge...
[Q4] 2. Scott Steiner (w/Rocka Khan) beat Petey Williams at 5:02. Same story as the pay-per-view. Steiner dominated Petey early on, but refused to pin him. Petey made a comeback and went up top, but Rocka pulled him down. Steiner scored the pin moments later. After the match, Steiner helped Petey up and patted him on the shoulder...
Powell’s POV: I did a google search for Rocka Khan in hopes of finding the correct spelling. The first listing was a MySpace page that belongs to a 74 year-old woman from New York City. Strange day for wrestling and Google.
Backstage, Tomko agreed to join the Angle Alliance. “At no point, will I be your bitch,” Tomko warned. Angle agreed and asked if he was coming to the wedding. “No,” Tomko replied... At ringside, Tenay said he was shocked that Tomko joined the Angle Alliance. Tenay said he just received word that Christian was knocked out backstage. A quick shot showed Christian knocked out on the floor of his locker room... [C] Backstage, Borash spoke to Karen until Young interrupted them. Karen threw a fit and kicked Young out of her locker room... West identified James Farrior of the Pittsburgh Steelers sitting int he front row...
Tomko and Styles came out for the tag title match. Joe walked out and accused Tomko and Styles of attacking Christian. Styles smiled and Tomko looked surprised. He said he had friends. “Big man, it’s time to go to work.” Kevin Nash walked out wearing jeans and a t-shirt...
[Q5] 3. Tomko and A.J. Styles defeated Samoa Joe and Kevin Nash in 7:00 when Kurt Angle interfered. Tomko and Styles rushed to ringside and began brawling with Joe and Nash. Both teams were in the ring and the show cut to commercial. [C] Joe worked most of the match for his team. He tagged Nash at one point, but the ref missed it and ordered Nash out of the ring. Nash picked up Hebner and moved him aside. While Hebner was trying to get Nash out of the ring, Angle ran out and punched Joe, who stumbled into Tomko’s finisher.
The new “Cross the line” video aired... [C] Backstage, Crystal tried to interview Joe and Nash. Joe took the mic and said Angle’s attack was a declaration of war. An intense Joe vowed to take out the Angle Alliance. Nash stood in the background and didn’t say a word...
[Q6] 4. Rellik vs. Eric Young at 2:04. Young cowered from Rellik, as Tenay explained that he’s “scared to death of monsters.” Young threw a few punches late, but Rellik put the mask on that he wears to the ring and scared Young. No, really. Rellik nailed Young with a clothesline for the win...
Powell’s POV: Young plays his character exceptionally well. He gets way too much camera time, but one can only assume that his character gets over with kids.
Backstage, Hermie Sadler interviewed the Motor City Machine Guns and LAX while two NASCAR drivers stood by... [C] A shot aired of Booker sitting outside the building waiting for Roode...
Powell’s POV: Not much to the NASCAR interview. The Guns tried to make a connection between wrestling and NASCAR by saying that one wrong move in either business could lead to a broken neck. Homicide said the only type of cars he likes are those in his friend’s chop shop. Ugh. Remember when LAX was the coolest thing on the show? Now they deliver stereotypical lines. Maybe next week they should drive lawnmowers to ringside. What a waste of talent.
5. Homicide (w/Hernandez, Salinas, Juan Pablo Montoya) defeated Chris Sabin (w/Alex Shelley) and Jimmy Rave (w/Lance Hoyt) in a short match. Jimmy Spencer sat in on commentary and marveled at there being three wrestlers in the match. Montoya hit Hoyt with a chair. Rave turned his attention to that and was rolled up for the win. There were two other NASCAR drivers at ringside, but they didn’t do anything worth mentioning...
[Q7] [C] A history piece video recapped Rhino’s alcohol issues. The narrator noted that he had conquered his problem... Rhino ran out for a promo. He said he hurt his family, friends, and fans by letting alcohol get the best of him again. “I have a question for you, James Storm,” Rhino said. “Are you a man? Do you have balls?” The crowd chanted his name. Rhino challenged Storm to an Elevation X match...
Powell’s POV: The crowd reacted to Rhino questioning whether Storm had balls because they found it to be edgy. The rest of the promo was mostly the same hyper yelling that makes Rhino so one-dimensional...
An Awesome Kong video was shown. “How do you stop a monster when winning the title isn’t good enough?” asked the narrator... Backstage, Crystal interviewed ODB, who hyped her match against Kong. Gail Kim walked onto the set and said she would have ODB’s back. ODB welcomed her to the party...
6. Awesome Kong (w/Raisa Saed) beat ODB in a street fight at 4:30. ODB, wearing a t-shirt and jeans, ran up and the ramp and brawled with Kong when she walked through the tunnel. Kong quickly took control and they brawled around the arena. [C] Saed interfered briefly, which brought Kim to ringside. Kong left the ring and whipped Kim into the rail.
[Q8] Later, Gail held Kong by the ropes. ODB charged, but Kong moved, causing ODB to run into Gail. Kong hit the Implant Buster for the win. Afterward, ODB and Gail exchanged shoved. Angelina Love and Velvet Sky ran out and pulled them apart. Here comes the three-way...
Outside the building, Payton Banks approached Booker T and said Robert Roode just called her he won’t be at the building. Booker told her to tell him that he’ll go looking for him if he doesn’t show up next week. Jim Cornette entered the picture and said Booker would get his chance to get revenge on Roode when they meet in a match at Destination X. Corny added that Booker will face Angle in a singles match next week... [C]
Powell’s POV: Cornette never mentioned the TNA Title, so it will probably be a non-title match.
Vow renewal time. A minister (I believe he was involved in the recent skits at A.J. Styles’ house) introduced the participants. A miserable Styles stood up for Kurt, while Borash served as Karen’s maid of honor. Funny. Joe interrupted on the mic and said he and Nash couldn’t let Kurt make the same mistake again. Joe punched Styles into Karen. The minister lost his glasses during the melee. Joe and Nash stripped Angle down to his boxers at ringside. Joe rammed Angle into the wall at the top of the entrance ramp. In the ring, the blind minister continued the ceremony, not realizing that Kurt was at ringside. A.J. and Karen stood in front of the minister, who pronounced them man and wife. He said A.J. could kiss the bride. A.J. planted a kiss on a surprised Karen’s lips while flipped at ringside. Funny...
Powell’s POV: People will either love or hate the wedding angle. I got a kick out of it. It could have been worse. The backstage segments with the Angles were limited and the end result was a cute cliffhanger. Honestly, I expected a lot worse. I’ll have a lot more to say about this show in Friday’s TNA Hitlist.
