2/11 Twilling's TNA Impact Live Coverage: A.J. Styles and Samoa Joe look to grab the momentum heading into Sunday's Against All Odds pay-per-view, Eight Card Stud tournament qualifying matches
Feb 11, 2010 - 10:00 PM

TNA Impact on Spike TV
Taped in Orlando, Fl.

[Q1] Eric Bischoff putting Mick Foley in a no disqualification match against Kevin Nash last week was recapped. Scott Hall and Syxx Pac attacked Kevin Nash after the match. Tonight's show is entitled "Hulk's Moment of Truth." ...

The opening video aired and fireworks lit up the Impact Zone. Mike Tenay and Taz welcomed us to the broadcast. Hulk Hogan's music hit and he made his way out to the ring. He mimicked Scott Hall's walk and then told the camera man that is exactly what he did.

"Welcome to your Impact Zone brother." Hogan said regardless of where he goes, everyone is always asking about TNA. He said he was cool again because he was in TNA. Hogan said the Impact Zone is on Lockdown tonight. Scott Hall and Syxx Pac were on the outside.

Hogan didn't agree with "X Pac" taking liberties with Kevin Nash last week. If Hall and Pac somehow snuck into the building, they would have to deal with Hogan. He teased wrestling if he had to. "If I have to put on the red and yellow brother, I'll do what I have to do."

Eric Young's music hit and he came out to the ring. Young said he was tight with Nash and good friends were hard to find. He asked Hogan to let Hall and Pac into the building. He wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty. Hogan wanted to talk and named off a lot of Young's career achievements, saying Young was one of the reasons he came to TNA.

Twill's Two Cents: I doubt Hogan knew who Eric Young even was before coming to TNA and he never mentioned him by name.

Young said out of respect for Hogan, he would do things "Kevin Nash's way" and take them out outside of the Impact Zone. Hogan liked that idea. They shook hands and Hogan's music played...

Twill's Two Cents: Yet another face turn, this time by Eric Young. All in all, a pretty solid segment for Young. That was a huge opportunity for him and I felt he handled it just fine. Other than that, there wasn't anything too special about it.

Mick Foley was shown walking through the back. He asked someone if Bischoff was there yet and she told him he had been there all day... [C]

[Q2] Hall and Pac were shown sneaking around in the back somewhere...

1. D'Angelo Dinero defeated Orlando Jordan in an Eight Card Stud tournament match in 4:46. They showed footage of Jordan beating Pope two weeks ago and Pope beating A.J. Styles last week. Jordan worked on the same bad knee he took advantage of two weeks ago. Both guys wore black and red.

Jordan hit a swinging backbreaker and the fans chanted "You still suck" at him. Funny. Pope won the crowd over with a few comeback moves. Jordan hit a spinebuster for a nearfall. In the corner, Pope hit a couple of right hands. He followed up with the DDE (running double knees to the back) for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: Solid opener but nothing spectacular. The crowd crapped all over Jordan. He is not over at all.

Backstage, Jeff Jarrett approached Eric Bischoff and said he hoped he delivered in his match against Mr. Anderson two weeks ago. Bischoff told Jarrett he did deliver and he was a very valuable commodity to him and TNA. His tone was very mocking.

Jarrett asked for one of the spots in the tournament to determine a new number one contender. Bischoff said no because if Jarrett won the tournament and became the number one contender, that would be "the same old thing" and not having Jarrett start from the bottom. Jarrett was sad and walked away as Bischoff cockily said "Bye bye." ... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: I hope Jarrett didn't think Bischoff was being genuine during the first three quarters of that exchange. Bischoff's cocky heel character works so well, especially if a select couple of people get to get a shot or two in on him in the upcoming weeks. Jarrett is the sympathetic babyface again, although I'd be pissed at him if I was a young guy.

[Q3] 2. Matt Morgan defeated Suicide in an Eight Card Stud tournament match in 2:17. Morgan hit the "running sit on the back of a guy's head" but Suicide was draped over the top rope. Impressive. Suicide hit a couple of comeback moves, but Morgan hit the carbon footprint for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: Entertaining couple of minutes. Suicide is just another guy now, like Consequences Creed or Black Machismo. He's an opening match getting squashed guy. Morgan looked good.

Backstage, Mick Foley entered Eric Bischoff's office and said he was willing to do anything he could if both Jeremy Borash and Abyss would be taken care of. Bischoff said he was a man of his word and he would take care of both guys.

Bischoff put Abyss in the tournament and booked him against Foley for the pay-per-view, which means Foley gets the last slot. He told Foley that if they tried anything, they would unmask Abyss. Foley was disgruntled... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: Bischoff was more smartass during the Jarrett segment, but it was the same basic character. Nice stuff from Eric here and Foley was great in his reactions. I hope Jarrett was watching that.

They announced Pope vs. Wolfe and Hernandez vs. Morgan on one side of the bracket and Angle vs. Anderson and Foley vs. Abyss on the other side for the tournament on Sunday...

Christy Hemme interviewed Anderson and Angle backstage. Anderson gave his normal promo about becoming the next TNA World Heavyweight Champion. Angle said if Anderson intended to screw Angle like Hogan did, he would snap his ankle faster than "that stupid microphone could fall from the ceilling." Angle left. A mic lowered for Anderson and he did his line... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: A microphone in the locker room? I get that it just follows him around, but that's just dumb. The microphone gimmick is cool, but they can make it old very quickly. By the way, I like the winner of the Anderson vs. Angle first round match to win the tournament.

[Q4] Backstage, Kurt Angle approached Eric Young and said he appreciated that he wanted to stand up for Kevin Nash. He said Young could not take on Hall and Pac by himself, so he would go get them alone, without Eric. He told Young to stay behind. Young punched the locker...

Twill's Two Cents: That made Young look pretty minor league. He looked like the angry little brother kicking and screaming when he yelled, "Look at what they did to Kevin!" They could have made Young look better by having Angle say he had Eric's back or something like that.

3. Doug Williams defeated Amazing Red to retain the X Division Championship in 4:48. Red hit a corkscrew plancha on Williams after kicking him to the floor. He followed with a missile dropkick for a two count. Williams avoided a Swanton and hit the rolling German with a bridge for the win...

Twill's Two Cents: Good match. Williams works an interesting X Division style in that he is not a high flying guy, but he is solid in the ring. Red was impressive in defeated.

The announcers promoted Angelina Love and Tara vs. The Beautifui People in a handicap match... [C]

[Q5] A long video package aired showcasing the feud between Tara and Angelina Love from 2009...

Twill's Two Cents: Nice job by TNA remembering the feud since Tara and Angelina are teaming tonight.

Christy interviewed Angelina and Tara backstage. Angelina was in completely babyface mode and said she pounced on Tara when she came to TNA because she didn't like her, but the past was the past. Tara said things were going to get ugly for TBP. "Real ugly," added Angelina...

4. The Beautiful People (Velvet Sky, Madison Rayne, and Lacey Von Erich) defeated Tara and Angelina Love in 9:29. Velvet ran from Angelina when she tagged in, but distractions from Rayne and Lacey allowed Velvet to gain the advantage. Tara and Angelina hit dropkicks to all three opponents as they stood on the floor... [C]

Back from commercial, Madison and Velvet worked over Tara in their corner. Lacey tagged in, did a moonsault, and hit an elbow. It was the most coordinated thing she has ever done in a ring. "That was a lot of work for an elbow," said Taz. Funny line.

Angelina received the hot tag and took out all of her opponents. Chaos broke loose and Angelina had Velvet pinned but Lacey hit Angelina with the ugly stick out of view from the distracted referee. Velvet rolled over on Angelina for the win. After the match, TBP attacked and stood over Tara as well...

Twill's Two Cents: I'm curious to see if the fifth quarter hour is the highest one on the whole show. That was the longest match of the night and it was decent at times but nothing too special with a predictable finish. Lacey's moonsault was so good that the crowd thought she missed it at first when she landed on her feet.

[Q6] Christy interviewed Desmond Wolfe backstage. It was like they were having a conversation. Wolfe dropped a couple of cliches about poker and life and that he would be the one to win the tournament to become the number one contender for the TNA Championship... [C]

Scott Hall and Syxx Pac were shown lurking around like the Repo Man in the parking lot...

5. Kurt Angle and Mr. Anderson defeated Hernandez and Desmond Wolfe in 6:12. Anderson kept his own intro relatively short. It's still a cool gimmick, but it definitely has a shelf life. The announcers put over the weird partnerships. Hernandez overpowered Anderson out of the gate.

Twill's Two Cents: By the way TNA, nice job playing the entrance music louder. It still isn't on par with WWE in terms of "hear music, know who is coming to the ring," but tonight is an improvement. That being said, way to shit on the tag titles by having them on two guys wrestling each other in singles matches at the pay-per-view.

Hernandez hit a backbreaker on Angle for a two count. Wolfe tagged in and worked on the arm and shoulder of Angle. Angle locked in the ankle lock and Wolfe tapped, but the referee was busy keeping Anderson out of the ring. Angle ran the ropes and suplexed Hernandez.

[Q7] Wolfe tagged in. Anderson pulled his tag back on Angle, forcing Angle to stay in the match. In the ring, Wolfe set Angle up for the Tower of London, but Angle countered and hit the Angle Slam. Anderson tagged himself in, threw Angle to the floor, and pinned Wolfe...

Twill's Two Cents: For a television tag team match, Angle bumped his ass off here. I guess I am supposed to be, but I'm just not into Angle and Anderson not getting along here because there was no reason to believe they would. So, the finish was predictiable. Hernandez and Wolfe especially looked solid in defeat.

Samoa Joe was shown walking through the backstage area... [C]

Samoa Joe came out to the ring. Tenay said he was ready for Joe, but wondered if he was ready for Joe and Flair. Joe said he came out for one reason, to talk to Styles, so he called him out. Styles wasted zero time in coming to the ring in a suit with Ric Flair in tow.

Joe told Styles, "You absolutely disgust me." Joe took the babyface role in the same promo they delivered when Joe turned heel and joined the Main Event Mafia. Joe put over their history as two of the best ever in TNA. Joe said Styles threw it all away and took a shortcut in his match against Kurt Angle.

Flair said he wasn't going to talk, but he wanted to make it clear that Styles was the champ. He said he would teach Joe respect. Joe said, "You can strut your way to the ring to teach me respect, but you'll be limping your ass to the hospital afterwards." Great line. Styles said Joe "turned more coats than the dry cleaners." Bad line, but great point by Styles.

Joe said he stood in the face of every new star, while Styles dropped to his knees and kissed the ring of his new sugar daddy. Styles got pissed. He took of his jacket and tie and jumped into the ring. Joe set up Styles for the muscle buster, but Flair delivered a low blow.

Styles and Flair put the boots to Joe. Styles continued the beating as referees tried to stop him. Flair got the mic and yelled in the face of Joe. Styles' music hit and he took off with Flair with a big smile on his face... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: Main event segment for the main event guys. That actually could have closed the show. You have the World Champion, the legend, and the strong challenger verbally sparring and then going at it physically. Because they just threw this match together, they couldn't build slowly to it, but they did a nice job selling this match tonight.

[Q8] Backstage, Styles was on his phone and was approached by Eric Bischoff. Styles was really laying on the Flair impression. Bischoff said he was going to referee the match on Sunday between Styles and Joe. Styles jumped on his phone and said, "Naitch, we've got a problem." ...

Tenay and Taz ran through the entire card for Against All Odds. Check the main page and I'll have the updated card up there...

Angle was leaving the building to get Hall and Pac, and Hogan stopped him. Angle said he knew Hogan had bad intentions and would do bad things in TNA. Hogan said The Band would kick his ass, but he wanted them to do it "in my house so someone might save your ass." Angle said he would see all three of them in the ring... [C]

Twill's Two Cents: I like Angle's odds against Hall, Pac, and Hogan. If Nash and Young are joining up with The Band, it will probably happen tonight.

In the ring, Angle said he wasn't going anywhere until Hogan's boys came out. Pac came to the ring and Angle beat him up. Hall got there and Angle put him in the ankle lock. Pac hit Angle with brass knuckles. They laid Angle out.

Hogan's music hit and they over teased him joining The Band, so you knew he wasn't going to. Hogan put the brass knuckles on. Hall held up Angle and Hogan hit Hall. He then hit Pac. Angle stood up. Hogan looked at him and tossed away the brass knuckles...

Twill's Two Cents: Okay, my problem with this is that is came after the segment with Joe and A.J. Out of Hogan, Angle, Pac, and Hall, only Angle is even wrestling at the pay-per-view, and none of them are in the main event. On top of all of that, this is 2010 and TNA is supposed to be looking to the future, so the very good, main event level, Styles and Joe segment should have closed the show.
