2/13 TNA Against All Odds PPV results and review: Mr. Anderson vs. Jeff Hardy in a ladder match for the TNA Title, Kurt Angle vs. Jeff Jarrett, Madison Rayne vs. Mickie James for the TNA Knockouts Title

A video played to open the show. Pyro was set off on the stage. Mike Tenay and Taz checked in from ringside as some atrocious music played...

Robbie E and Cookie came to the ring. Robbie asked the referee to count out The Bucks and declare him the winner of the match. The referee did so and proclaimed Robbie the winner by countout. Robbie celebrated like he won a hard fought match. Funny.

As Robbie was heading to the back, Kazarian came out and met him on the entrance ramp. Kazarian said there would be an X Division Title match. He said he would defend the title against Robbie and said he would be accompanied by "the garden gnome" Cookie. Robbie took a swing at Kazarian, who got the better of the exchange and took Robbie to the ring...

Powell's POV: For those who haven't been following along, Generation Me had travel issues that prevented them from appearing as advertised, so this is the make good match. Robbie was slated to face Max and Jeremy Buck in a three-way for No. 1 contendership, so this this is more than a suitable replacement match.

1. Kazarian defeated Robbie E (w/Cookie) to retain the X Division Title in 7:05. Kazarian started strong and then Robbie took control briefly when Cookie smacked Kazarian with her purse. Kazarian came back and hit the reverse tombstone and got the clean pin...

Powell's POV: A solid opening match. It was fine for what it was, but I'm still waiting for a standout match from Kazarian and Robbie. Kazarian needs a name for that reverse tombstone. Update: Dot Net reader Jason C. wrote to say that Kazarian's finisher has a name. It's "Fade to Black" after a Metallica tune. Works for me.

Backstage, Christy Hemme interviewed Scott Steiner and Beer Money. Steiner stuttered a couple of times and took a swig or two from James Storm's beer. Storm and Robert Roode both got some mic time. Storm was especially effective when it came to getting a reaction out of the live crowd for their six-man match.

Powell's POV: Beer Money have the potential to be the most over act in TNA. Roode nailed a strong promo on Thursday's Impact, and Storm's beer swilling character has always had great babyface potential.

2. James Storm, Robert Roode, and Scott Steiner defeated Rob Terry, Gunner, and Murphy in a six-man tag match in 10:00. A.J. Styles joined the announcers on commentary for the match. The live crowd chanted "Scotty" when he started the match against Gunner. By the way, Gunner and Murphy have real ring gear with their names on it, which is a major improvement.

The production crew switched to a shot that featured the match in a big box, the commentators in a smaller box, and a seizure inducing flash on the area outside the box. I know I'm hardly one to talk with the flashing on the main page, but here's hoping they never go to that shot again. Steiner hit a top rope Frankensteiner on Gunner and got the win for his team...

Powell's POV: The live crowd loved Beer Money and Steiner. A throwaway six-man tag match that served its purpose. I still have no idea what TNA sees in Rob Terry. He's a walking red flag, and he is downright terrible in the ring. By the way, major props for the fan sign that reads, "I'll pay Flair's bar tab." Hilarious.

Backstage, Hemme interviewed Devon, who had his sons with him in the locker room. Devon told his sons that they are not allowed to get involved in the match. He said the match is between him and Bully Ray. He ordered them to stay out of the match...

Powell's POV: Hey, I ordered the pay-per-view to see Devon's sons in action! Bait and switch!!! Okay, not really. Devon was solid with his explanation. My guess is this leads to Ray beating up Devon's sons while Devon makes his entrance.

The announcers said cooler heads prevailed, and then they set up a video package that focussed on Samoa Joe and D'Angelo Dinero. Strangest setup for a feud ever...

3. Samoa Joe defeated D'Angelo Dinero in 8:30. Dinero wore shorts that read, "Pope's gonna kill you." He tried to walk out on the match, but Joe's camera man Okada walked onto the stage wearing an outfit that was half Lone Ranger and half The Gimp from Pulp Fiction.

For some reason, Pope didn't just bitch slap Okada and walk right past him to the back. Rather, he backed down and headed to ringside where Joe went through the ropes to dive onto him. Back inside the ring, Joe hit a powerslam for a near fall. Dinero came back with a knee to Joe's head and then removed the top turnbuckle pad.

Joe came back and applied the rear naked choke out of a roll up attempt by Dinero. Pope tapped out immediately. The announcers noted that Dinero tapped out quickly. Pope clapped for Joe after the match. He got Joe to slap his hand, but then Dinero kicked him. Okada tried to help, but Pope took him out.

Pope hit the DDE on Joe in the corner with the exposed turnbuckle. Joe came up bleeding from the forehead. Tenay said this explained why Pope tapped so quickly. Joe let out a primal scream and went after Dinero, who exited the ring and mocked Joe by putting on his shades and smiling at Joe...

Powell's POV: This feud can't end quickly enough for me. Both guys desperately need to get on a winning streak rather than to have a back and forth feud. Plus, the storyline setup has been dreadful. Okada adds nothing to Joe's act.

Hemme interviewed Mickie James backstage... A video recapped the Mickie and Madison Rayne feud...

4. Madison Rayne beat Mickie James in a Last Knockout Standing match to retain the TNA Knockouts Title in 8:25. Mickie wore her Pochahontas ring gear. Madison played up the loaded glove from the start, but Mickie avoided it initially.

At 6:00, the announcers pointed out that Mickie picked up Madison at ringside even though the referee was counting her down. Tenay quickly reasoned that perhaps Mickie didn't want to give her a break. Nice cover. At 7:00, Mickie hit the Thesz Press off the top rope.

Mickie removed Madison's glove and put it on her own hand. The referee stopped counting even though Madison was down. Tara ran out and distracted Mickie and the referee. Madison pulled out brass knuckles and hit Mickie, who remained down for the ref's ten count...

Powell's POV: Mickie is a cowgirl one night and a Native American the next. I've wrote it before and I'll write it again, ditch the themes and just go back to looking like an athlete. Is it wrong that I figured Tara would play a part in the finish when she didn't accompany Madison to ringside? Another forgettable match from Mickie and Madison. Too bad.

Backstage, Jeff Hardy was applying facepaint. He wished Mr. Anderson luck and said, "You're going to need it, you asshole"...

Matt Morgan came to the ring in street clothes to a good reaction. He called for Hernandez to get his ass to the ring. Hernandez came out with a smile on his face. Morgan told him to start talking or he would kick his ass all over the Impact Zone. Heranandez asked if he wanted him to explain why he cost him his title shot on Impact.

Hernandez asked about his own title shot. Hernandez said he went to Mexico to be with his own people. He said the Mexican fans loved him and treated him like the star that he is. He said he's treated like a second class citizen in the United States. "As of today, the minority is the majority," Hernandez said.

Hernandez said he's in Hispanic America. He told the fans to look around and realize that they are the minority. He called Morgan a "punk ass white boy" and said that if he doesn't like what he's saying, he could take his ass "out of our country."

Hernandez kneed Morgan in the nuts. Hernandez picked up Morgan and hit an Attitude Adjustment. Hernandez mugged for the camera and then headed backstage while Morgan sold the injury in the ring...

Powell's POV: So TNA sent Hernandez to Mexico in hopes that he would become a Latino star only to bring him back and cast him as a heel? Granted, he's playing to the Hispanic fans to some extent with his mic work, but I felt like I was listening to a Konnan promo recited by a guy who can't talk.

Backstage, Hemme interviewed Matt Hardy and asked him the meaning of his new name Cold Blood. Hardy spoke about always being the good guy in the wrestling industry. He said it never got him anywhere. Hardy said he's going to write the final chapter of his feud with Rob Van Dam. "And I am going to do it with a smile on my face and cold blood running through my veins," Hardy said...

Powell's POV: Hardy should go back to the drawing board for his nickname. This Cold Blood thing doesn't do anything for me. Based on the lack of crowd reaction he received for the promo and his entrance, I don't think I'm alone. He's trying hard to sound like a deep thinker, but he's coming across like a second rate Raven.

5. Rob Van Dam beat Matt Hardy in 13:25. Jackson James is the ref of the match. Hardy is in better shape than he was when these two met in his debut match. They traded punches early on. There was an odd moment when it appeared Hardy was expecting Van Dam to punch him and he didn't.

There was another odd spot with Hardy applying a chin lock and RVD apparently thinking he was going for a snap mare, but they recovered from it quickly. Van Dam hit a split legged moonsault for a near fall. Hardy came back with the Side Effect for a near fall of his own.

Hardy played to the crowd and got a little heat. He kicked RVD and went for the Twist of Hate, but RVD fought him off and caught him with a kick in the corner. Later, Hardy went to the top rope and went for a moonsault, but RVD moved. Van Dam went up top and hit the Five Star Frogsplash to get the clean win...

Powell's POV: There were a couple of clunky spots, but this was much better than their Genesis match. Still, I'm surprised that Hardy has become just another TNA wrestler so quickly. He was never given that hot push from the start like most debuting wrestlers get. Rather, he just feels like a mid-card player. Perhaps that's where he belongs, but you'd think creative would have made more of an effort to get a return on Dixie Carter's investment.

Backstage, Hemme interviewed Bully Ray, who got in her face and intimidated her. Ray said he wanted Devon's kids to be involved. He said Devon's sons were born through their mother's ass. He remained right in Hemme's face as he spoke and said he was going to finish his feud with Devon tonight. He asked Hemme if she liked it and said, "Of course you do."

A video package recapped the Buly Ray and Devon feud...

6. Bully Ray beat Brother Devon in a street fight in 9:30. Ray came out first and hid so that he could attack Devon from behind. They brawled at ringside to start the match. Devon took drinks from the crowd and slammed them over Ray's face. Devon was in control of the match when his kids walked to ringside at 4:30 for no apparent reason.

Devon was distracted by his sons and ignored their pleas for him to turn around. Ray took advantage of the distraction and hit Devon with a chair. Ray wrapped a chair around Devon's head. Devon's kids entered the ring to no reaction and tried to stop Ray from hitting their dad. It worked, as Devon recovered and attacked Ray.

One of Devon's kids picked up a trash can and slammed it over Ray's head. The kids then held Ray's legs while Devon went to the top rope and did the Whassup spot. The kids led the crowd in a "Get the tables" call. They all went to ringside and grabbed a table, which Devon set up.

Ray recovered and low blowed Devon. Ray handcuffed Devon to the second turnbuckle in the corner. Devon's kids tried to help. Ray kicked one of them. The other punched away at Ray, but he blasted the kid with a kick and then pinned him. Devon showed anguish in the corner. Ray spat on him after calling him weak and saying he was a loser.

Ray picked up a chair and teased striking Devon over the head with it. Ray stopped and turned his attention to Devon's kids. Devon called out for security and then begged Ray not to attack his kids. Ray picked up one of the kids. He told Devon that he's weak and his kids are weak. Ray powerbombed one of the kids through a table in mid-ring.

Trainers came out and tended to the kids as Taz used a somber voice on commentary. Devon carried one of his sons over his own shoulder while the trainers wheeled the other son out on a stretcher...

Powell's POV: This was poorly booked. There was no reason for the kids to run out when they did. The fans have no reason to care about Devon's kids, so there was a loud "one more time" chant after the powerbomb through the table. Devon did an excellent job of selling it in the corner, but he's a victim of the angle being rushed. They introduced the kids too quickly. It also felt like a bad wrestling angle when Taz, who has already stood up and gotten involved in this feud, remained on commentary even though Ray was beating up Devon's kids. This could have meant more with better storytelling.

Backstage, Jeremy Borash interviewed Jeff Jarrett and Karen Jarrett. Jeff asked if Borash thought he would put his kids in harm's way. "Our kids," Karen stressed. Jeff rolled his eyes before repeating what she said. Jeff guaranteed victory and said Kurt will walk Karen down the aisle in Fayetteville on March 3...

Powell's POV: I wonder how many fans in Fayetteville are looking forward to going to the show on March 3 and have no idea that the taping actually takes place a week earlier?

In another part of the backstage area, Hemme interviewed Kurt Angle, who said it makes him sick to see Jeff use his kids as pawns. Kurt addressed his children and said they would be coming home with daddy after he beats Daddy Jeff's ass...

Powell's POV: I'm waiting for the three-way tag match with Devon's sons vs. Kurt's kids vs. Jeff's daughters. I guess TNA really is one big happy family just like the owner wants it to be. Sigh. By the way, I wonder what a judge would say if someone entered the courtroom and demanded custody of his children because he won it in a fight. Good times.

7. Jeff Jarrett (w/Karen Jarrett) defeated Kurt Angle in 16:05. If Jarrett wins, Kurt has to walk Karen down the aisle when they renew their vows. If Kurt wins, he gains custody of his children. Angle was in control of the match when they went to ringside. He punched Jarrett a few times and then Karen slapped Kurt. Angle responded by firing away at Jeff.

Jarrett came back with a nice superplex, but Angle quickly regained control. He had Jarrett pinned at one point, but Karen distracted the referee. The ref was bumped around 11:30 and they headed to ringside where Karen clawed Kurt's back. Apparently, this isn't the first time Karen has clawed Kurt's back, as he was so used to the feeling that he just no-sold it.

The wrestlers headed back to the ring and Angle picked up a chair only to have the referee recover and take it away from him. Jeff rolled up Kurt for a near fall. Angle went right back on the offensive. At 14:45, Angle applied the ankle lock. Karen reached in and tried to help Jeff, but Kurt pulled Jeff toward the center of the ring and brought Karen along for the ride. Jeff tapped out, but the referee was busy arguing with Karen.

In the end, Kurt was attempting to apply the ankle lock out of a roll up, but Jeff sat down on him and got the clean pin. Kurt looked like he was trying to cry in the corner as Karen tended to Jeff on the floor. The Jarretts stared at Angle and he stared back at them. Kurt looked to the ground as Jeff and Karen slowly made their way up the stage.

Kurt took off his boots and placed them in the middle of the ring. "For those who don't know what that means, that means you're done," Taz said. "Done, retired." Tenay started to spaz on commentary when Taz told him to hold on. Taz pointed to Kurt's shoes in the ring. "I didn't know he was going to do that if he was not victorious in this match," Taz said. "Wow"...

Tenay played on the Angle situation by switching gears to the TNA Title match. Fortunately, Taz said he was speechless due to the Angle situation. Tenay said he understood and then sent it backstage...

Powell's POV: Good near falls down the stretch. Are we supposed to believe that Kurt is done for real this time when he just came back from a self-imposed retirement? It was a nice change to see Jarrett win without using a guitar or some other eye rolling heel tactic.

Backstage, Hemme interviewed Mr. Anderson, who did a lousy Jesse Ventura impersonation. He mocked Jeff Hardy for attracting pre-pubescent girls. He said he thinks the girls love Hardy more than Justin Bieber. Anderson said he'll win because he just so happens to be a bigger asshole...asshole...

Powell's POV: Weak promo. I keep waiting for Anderson to step up and carry himself like a champion or the star of the company, but it hasn't happened yet. Granted, part of the problem is the way he's been used since he captured the title. However, I really thought he would raise his mic work to a new level and carry himself like the start of the show, but it hasn't happened yet.

A shot aired of the Jeff Hardy version of the TNA Title hanging above the ring. Tenay ran through the Tale of the Tape... Hardy made his entrance and carried a the spray painted ladder to the ring with him. Anderson came out next to a mediocre crowd reaction. Jeremy Borash handled the in-ring introductions for the title match. The fans got behind Anderson at that point...

Powell's POV: Jackson James and Earl Hebner were both named referees for the match. Um, what? Please let this be a Russo swerve of a swerve rather than some crappy finish with two referees seeing two different things.

8. Jeff Hardy defeated Mr. Anderson in a ladder match to win the TNA Title in 18:10. Taz said he would be a little nervous if he were champion and saw that his challenger was as calm and cool as Hardy. Nice sports-like call. Hardy spat in Anderson's face to start the match. They immediately went to ringside and brawled. Anderson ran Hardy into one of the ladders.

Hardy came back, but when he tried to bring a ladder to the ring, Anderson grabbed the other end of the ladder and used it to run Hardy into the ring. Back inside the ring, Hardy hit a neckbreaker on the ladder.

Both men ended up on a ladder at 6:15. Hardy performed a sunset flip into a powerbomb off the ladder in the first big spot of the match. Hardy followed up by leapfrogging the ladder and dropping a leg on Anderson on the mat. Hardy then backdropped Anderson onto a ladder set up in the corner.

There was a ladder that was set upside down for several minutes. Eventually, Anderson tried to suplex Hardy onto that ladder, but Hardy's leg caught it first and it folded up and they didn't get the spot they were going for. Anderson set up a ladder and made a slow move for the belt, but Hardy got up and hit him with the Twist of Hate.

Hardy called for his spray painted ladder. Jackson James handed it to him. "I guess he doesn't like the one that's on the apron," Taz said. Anderson recovered and bumped Hardy on the ladder. He went up top and went for a senton, but Hardy moved. Anderson held the back of his head as the announcers played up his recent head injury.

At 16:35, both men ended up on opposite ladders underneath the title belt. They wobbled as they traded punches. Anderson stopped Hardy from grabbing the belt and then swung it so that it swayed back and forth. Anderson went for a Mic Check off the ladder. Hardy tried to hang onto the belt and/or pull it down, but he failed and fell to the mat. Hardy climbed the ladder and took the belt down to win the match...

Powell's POV: It would have been a cool finish if they had been able to pull off Hardy grabbing the belt while taking the move off the ladder. That said, do you go for such a difficult move as part of the finish for your match and risk having that happen? Both men tried hard and Anderson took a lot of big bumps.

Unfortunately, it didn't feel like a major league main event. In fact, the show had a low budget feel throughout the night. Yes, even more than usual. I wonder if Hardy will bring the belt with him when he goes back to court on Wednesday? I'll have a lot more to say about tonight's show in the Dot Net Members audio coming up later tonight, as well as in the TNA Against All Odds Hitlist on Monday.
