Hulk Hogan and Friends: Hogan and company comment on Randy Savage, John Cena, Steve Austin, working for Vince McMahon, and much more
May 27, 2011 - 09:53 AM

Dot Net reader Dave attended the "Hulk and Friends" Q&A event in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Thursday and sent in the following report.

After two delays getting to Green Bay, "Hulk and Friends" finally made it here after six months. Hulk Hogan, The Nasty Boys, Brutus Beefcake, Koko B Ware, Greg Valentine, and Jim Duggan all appeared.

Because of the delays, they held an autograph session that they didn't have planned for the original shows I don't believe. It was awesome to meet all the wrestlers up close, and the real highlight of the night for me. They signed past the time because there was a huge line with the usual autograph hounds, the average fans, and the diehards dressed up like Hulk. The line went so slow because they all were extremely generous to each fan and took countless pictures and signed tons of items.

In quick summary, I can say they were all extremely nice. The real story from the session was Hulk Hogan, though. He was so nice to every fan, posed for pictures, and listened to what each said. He also joked around with the wrestlers all around the table, and it was surreal to be up close to him, and I don't ever mark out at much these days. Considering every fan probably told him about the same thing, he really listened to what each said, and had nice responses and made conversation.

When I got up to him he shook my hand for 30 seconds as I told him different stories of me being a fan over the years and he had a big smile the whole time. Hogan talked about how the NWO were "rocking back then." When there was silence as he signed other autographs coming down the table from other fans, he kept talking to me to my surprise as I approached Koko. Say what you want about Hulk Hogan, but even the biggest of his haters would have had a hard time putting him down as a person if they would have witnessed his interaction with fans for two hours.

As for the show, it only lasted an hour and a half. Jimmy Hart wasn't there, so The Nasty Boys, mainly Brian Knobbs, was the host. He is hilarious, quick witted, and any time the show got dull he picked it up. They brought out each one by one to start and they all thanked the fans for coming and each spoke briefly about Randy Savage, gave tributes to him, and thanked fans for coming. They all also repeatedly apologized for taking so long to get here.

Other notes from the Q&A Show:

-They walked around and gave out microphones, and there was some good questions but lots of silly ones from kids or elderly people.

-Hulk Hogan told the story (that you guys posted the video of) of meeting Macho for the last time last year at the hospital. He said that's one of his favorite memories of him because he was so happy and full of life.

-The Ultimate Warrior must be one of the least respected guys ever, as they all had nothing good to say about him. At one point, Greg Valentine said wrestling him were his scariest matches ever because "his head was in outer space."

-Jim Duggan constantly got the crowd going and let out various "Hooooos"

-One woman asked them to talk about the new "network wrestling" they were involved in. Oh man, TNA really is that unknown to the casual fan. Hogan went onto talk about Impact Wrestling and TNA and said the same things he has in recent interviews about the direction of the company.

-Hogan was asked if he ever will wrestle Stone Cold. "That's the one, brother," he said. He added that right now it's 50/50 if he'll ever wrestle again himself, but he said he saw Austin on Tough Enough the other night and he looks awesome.

-A fan (stupidly in my opinion) asked if they regretted working for Vince McMahon, and they all said they wouldn't be here right now if it weren't for Vince. Valentine said you aren't anybody in history unless you work for Vince. (Which is where I, as a huge Sting fan, thought about him in my head how he has a strong place in history and never worked for WWE).

-Throughout the show, all the wrestlers gave huge respect to Andre the Giant anytime his name was brought up.

-One fan asked if Hulk was going to come back to WWE and "save us from Cena" to which Hogan replied, "John's doing a great job, he's awesome."

-Hilariously, the Nasty Boys gave a fan the "pit stop" on stage when his question was what it's like to receive one. The kid actually sold it hilariously as Saggs dragged him by the hair.

-They shared opinions on kayfabe when one fan brought it up. Hogan said it makes it more interesting now that the fans know so much, but Beefcake said how fans now have no emotional attachment to characters. he said that when he watches wrestling on TV now, he sees fans sitting on their hands.

-Koko said Owen Hart was a great partner, and a ton of fun. He told a story how he got to dress as the Blue Blazer once, but he was more like the Black Blazer. The Nasty Boys told a funny story how Owen once rear-ended their car when Owen was worried about making it to a show on time.

-No one asked about Savage stories, which made me regret not asking a question, but all the wrestlers said personal things about him, and Hogan said great things about him. He also does a great "oh yeah" impersonation and let out one to start and end the show, and had the crowd give out a collective one to end the night.

-I would estimate that there were about 500 people in attendance.

Final Thoughts: All in all it was a great time. I'm an autograph kind of guy so that really made the night. The show was some good entertainment with them BS'ing around. This was their second show in 10 months of "Hogan and Friends" so who knows if they'll do more? If you can get to a show near you, it's worth the time. I will say if they only had really good questions asked it would have been great, because the guys were full of stories and opinions on wrestling past, present, and future. All the guys thanked the fans numerous times, and all said how they're so grateful to be here at this point in their life as they reflected on their "countless fallen brothers."

I know there's a lot of Hogan haters and I'm not here to persuade anyone's opinions, but he was just a classy guy all night, told no tall tale stories that some would expect, and just was genuinely having fun and enjoying the time with the fans, which was great to see. He seems to be at a really great place in his life, and talked about how he's doing great after his recent personal issues and is thankful for each day.
