4/19 ROH in Chicago: TNA's Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley vs. The Briscoes, Lacey leaves Jimmy Jacobs for another wrestler
Apr 20, 2008 - 01:42 AM

ROH in Chicago, Ill.
Report by Herb Kraft

In a pre-show match, Danny Daniels and Rhett Titus defeated Trik Davis and Ernie Osiris.

1. Austin Aries defeated Silas Young. Aries made Young tap to the Horns of Aries. This was competitive until the end. Aries was a huge crowd favorite. Jimmy Jacobs, wearing a strange red hair piece (?) arrived after the match to congratulate Austin on joining Age of the Fall. Austin, however, indicated that he engaged in “verbal and non-verbal communication” with Lacey. He informed Jacobs that AOTF is “weak” because it must beg people to join. Jacobs became highly upset, and Aries warned Jacobs to stay away from both of them.

2. Alex Payne “Sugarfoot” fought Mitch Franklin to a no-contest in a “bonus” match. Payne and Franklin started the match and Jimmy Jacobs came out to “show that the AOTF is about action.” Payne and Franklin are highly irritated that their match has been interrupted and accepted the challenge of Necro Butcher to a fight (can’t call it a match). Necro had barbed wire wrapped on his hands and beat both wrestlers. The beating continues after the end of the fight.

3. Claudio Castagnoli and Pelle Primeau beat Brent Albright and Adam Pearce (with Larry Dempsey and Larry Sweeney). Pelle put up a good fight but Pearce and Albright manhandle Pelle. Especially vicious chops and a few very serious kicks straight to the face. Sweeney distracted the ref, Pearce tried to hit Claudio with his briefcase, but instead hit Brent. Claudio hit the Ricola Powerbomb for the win. Larry Sweeney screamed at Albright in a rather strangely high pitched voice. Albright left unmoved by the reprimand. By the way, in yesterday’s report on the Detroit show, I noted that Adam Pearce did not make the show. This was courtesy of United Airlines.

4. MsChif defeated Lacey and Daizee and Ashley in a four-way match. MsChif, who has an ear piercing scream, won while Lacey and Daizee Haze were fighting outside the ring.

Jimmy Jacobs arrived again and asked Lacey to deny that she is romantically involved with Aries. Lacey refused to discuss the issue in public. Lacey, exasperated with Jacobs, stated that “she didn’t want to embarrass or hurt you…” Aries arrived and is greeted by Lacey, rather enthusiastically. The happy couple left. Jacobs wept in the ring, and was rewarded with the largest shower of streamers I’ve ever seen. AOTF came out to console Jacobs, who was inconsolable.

5. Chris Hero defeats Delirious. Delirious spent the match patting the top of his head and then head butting or ramming Hero with his cranium. Delirious needed help back to the dressing room.

6. Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley defeated The Briscoes. The Motor City Machine Guns were greeted with “welcome back” chants. Very, highly competitive match. MCMG won after the Briscoes were beat up after quite a number of high impact moves. After the match, Sabin and Shelley shook hands with the Briscoes. AOTF arrived and attacked the Briscoses, leaving both very bloody. Jacobs then spiked himself. AOTF left dragging Jimmy with them.

7. Ibushi defeated El Generico. Ibushi is a new generation of athlete. Some of his moves are chains of three highly acrobatic moves that are unique. Wow. Generico does very, very well in the beginning, but falls victim to a reverse 450. Unbelievable. Standing ovation and chants of “Please come back.”

8. Zack Gowan and Tyler Black and Joey Matthews defeated Jack Evans and Ruckus and Jigsaw. Evans looked great (after his horrible injury in Japan and facial reconstruction surgery) and put on an outstanding display of break dancing and violence. Jigsaw was very impressive. ATOF was losing but Tyler pulls out a package piledriver out of nowhere for the win.

Yes, it’s Jimmy Jacobs time again. He stated that his heart was broken by Aries, and that “he has to do this himself." He called out Aries. Aries runs out and gets caught coming in the ring, but Aries quickly gains the advantage.

AOTF runs out and Aries dives and knocks down all three AOTF cronies. However, four-on-one isn’t good odds. Aries was hit with a cane. Jacobs wanted to spike him, but Lacey arrived and begged for Aries until Jacobs relented. AOTF left and there was more confused than before. Aries and Lacey left together.

9. Nigel McGuiness defeated Kevin Steen to retain the ROH Title. Nigel assumed his regular posture (stretched out with his buttocks up) and Steen planted an enormous kick. McGuiness and Steen brawled, and almost ran over the ring announcer before the introductions were complete. Nasty contact with the ring barricade for both. McGuiness attacked Steen's arm, and hurt Steen, but each move that McGuiness tried was countered effectively. Of the recent challengers, Steen is by far the best foil for McGuiness.

After sentons and several sharpshooters, it appeared that Steen would finally beat McGuiness. Nigel dug his fingers into Steen’s eyes. While Steen was trying to clear his eyes, McGuiness crushed him with a clothesline for the win. Instead of heading for the parking lot, half the crowd cheered Steen.
