1/18 Mathieson's ROH on HDnet Live Coverage: Tyler Black and Colt Cabana vs. Austin Aries and Kenny King, Jay Briscoe vs. Mark Briscoe, Sonjay Dutt vs. Delirious, and Erick Stevens in action
Jan 18, 2010 - 07:00 PM

Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDnet
Taped in Philadelphia, PA

Opening video aired and Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak hyped Jay Briscoe vs. Mark Briscoe for tonight. Both had their money on Briscoe. We were taken straight down to the first match: Delirious vs. Sonjay Dutt in a submission match.

1. Delirious (w/Daizee Haze) defeated Sonjay Dutt in 11:00. Delirious continually went for the Cobra Stretch in the beginning. Sonjay worked on Delirious' leg, which Prazak noted was a change from his usual back strategy to set up for the Camel Clutch. Dutt used several dragon screws, a couple shinbreakers, and a single leg Boston crab.

Sonjay switched up to the back with several knees to the back, and locked in the Tarantula. At 8:00, Daizee Haze came up to the apron and Sonjay shoved her off. Hogewood flipped out. Dutt hit a few back-centric attacks, then went to ringside and got a chair. Paul Turner wouldn't let him use it, and Daizee capitalized with a dropkick behind his back. Delirious hit the Cobra Clutch suplex, and locked in the Cobra Stretch, forcing Sonjay to tap out.

Joe's Judgment: The crowd was dead until Sonjay shoved Daizee. Not what you'd like for what is I guess a big blowoff match. The match was pretty good psychologically most of the way, but the finish was pretty weak. Better than you'd think given the utter lack of heat though.

Highlights from Final Battle aired interspersed with an Austin Aries promo. Aries said that Tyler Black couldn't beat him, and that he was a fighting champion. He said that he was the MV3, and nobody could take the belt off of him.

Jay and Mark Briscoe were shown talking. They agreed that they wouldn't hit each other in the balls or eyes, and Jay wouldn't go after Mark's knee, and that the winner would buy the beer...

2. Jay Briscoe defeated Mark Briscoe in 13:30. Fairly slow-paced action for the first several minutes. Prazak mentioned that the last time they wrestled, it went to a double knockout in Liverpool, England in 2007. They exchanged various suplexes and forearms for much of the first several minutes.

At 10:00, Jay went to ringside, and Mark moonsaulted onto him. They brawled on the floor, pretty stiffly actually. Neither man could make it in before 20, so the match was ruled a double countout. Jim Cornette came out and offered them a choice: either the match ends with a double countout and nobody gets the money, or they could restart and get a real finish. They chose to restart.

After the restart, they kicked things up a notch. Mark hit a second rope ace crusher, and went for the cutthroat driver. Jay broke free, but Mark tried it again. Once again, Jay broke out, and then got what looked like a fireman's carry into a rollup for the pin.

Joe's Judgment: Before the restart, it was pretty bland. After the restart, it was pretty good, but it seemed like both Briscoes were mailing it in tonight.

"Prince Nana Presents Erick Stevens" was hyped as next... [C]

Nana, Mr. Ernesto Osiris, and Joey Ryan were in the ring. Nana announced the entrance of "the Ghanaian Express", Erick Stevens.

3. Erick Stevens defeated Harlem Bravado in :45. Suplex, lariat, Doctorbomb, pin, Embassy celebration, additional lariat.

Joe's Judgment: Stevens as a heel in the Embassy is so awesome. I'm really high on him and I'm glad ROH has finally given him some direction.

Tyler Black cut a promo. He said Aries' day was coming, and it was coming by his hand.

4. Tyler Black and Colt Cabana defeated Austin Aries and Kenny King in 12:20. The babyface team is Hogewood's dream tag team. The heel team is Prazak's "reality team". Not sure what that means, but it's what he said. A few minutes in, Colt backdropped Aries to ringside, and his head caught the apron.

Cabana and King did most of the in-ring work, with Aries coming in at strategic intervals. Aries and King hit some doubleteams, with one holding Cabana in a wheelbarrow position and the other jumping on him. Colt made the hot tag after lariating King when he was dancing.

Black tried to springboard lariat King, but King caught him for the Royal Flush, but Tyler countered into a DDT. Wow. The faces hit dives and the crowd suddenly came to life. Aries countered the buckle bomb into a huracanrana. He rolled up Black, but he kicked him in the head right after. Cabana tagged in and hit a Flying Asshole in the corner, then a Flying Asshole in the middle of the ring.

King hit a somersault kick on Black, and then Aries got a nearfall with a rocket launcher. Aries hit the IED, then tried for a spike piledriver. Cabana powered out, and sent King into the ropes, knocking Aries down. He then hit the Colt 45 on King for the pin.

Joe's Judgment: Fun main event that left me wanting to see more, something that I haven't been able to really say in a while. This match showed why Black is best kept as a tag wrestler, where he can hit all his signature spots and still have somebody else to rely on to keep the match fresh.
