1/4 Mathieson's ROH on HDnet Live Coverage: The Only Hour of Pro Wrestling Tonight, featuring Roderick Strong vs. Davey Richards, Rhett Titus vs. El Generico, Eddie Kingston vs. Claudio Castagnoli, and Steve Corino in action
Jan 4, 2010 - 06:55 PM

Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDnet
Taped in Philadelphia, PA

The show opened with a Mike Hogewood voiceover what looked to be an area of backstage. He said that just as the show was going on the air, they received some footage. The footage was of a bunch of referees and Kyle Durden running to Eddie Kingston, who was clutching his knee with a chair lying on the ground behind him. He tried to stand up, but was unable to. One referee was seen picking up a playing card: the king of diamonds.

Joe's Judgment: Interesting way to open the show. Without spoiling anything, the card has some significance.

Claudio Castagnoli entered for the first match, followed by Kingston, favoring his knee heavily.

1. Claudio Castagnoli defeated Eddie Kingston in 5:00. Claudio went right for Kingston's knee, and King sold it extremely well. Kingston hit a quick uranage, but got up in pain from his knee. He tried a spinebuster, but couldn't lift Claudio due to his knee.

Claudio got Kingston up for the airplane spin, spun him around, and then let go with his hands for the UFO. That never ceases to amaze me. Kingston hit another uranage, but again could not follow up due to the injured knee. Castagnoli locked in a horse collar lock, and Kingston was forced to tap.

Joe's Judgment: Nice little five minute match that told a pretty good story with Kingston's knee injury. These two have absolutely great chemistry together.

Kyle Durden was backstage with Davey Richards. Richards said that he doesn't like to talk much, that he prefers to let his fists do the talking. He reminded us that he and Roderick Strong were in the No Remorse Corps together, and that tonight "the hunt is..." then changed his mind and went with "no remorse"...

2. Steve Corino defeated Andy Ridge in 3:00. Corino is actually dressed to wrestle this week. After a quick sunset flip from Ridge, the match was all Corino. Ridge got another nearfall with a backslide, but shortly afterward, Corino hit a reverse piledriver, then the Sliding C Special for the pin.

Joe's Judgment: Corino's not in the best shape, but then when was he ever in the best shape? Decent squash, and Ridge actually looked not as pathetic as one would expect. He didn't get Sugarfooted.

3. El Generico defeated Rhett Titus in 9:20. Titus worked a wristlock before doing the thing where he puts on a weak armbar and strokes the guys arm while it's sticking through his legs. Yeah.

Lots of back and forth action with neither man maintaining an extended advantage. Several strike exchanges as well, culminating in Titus hitting Generico with a Rocker Dropper type move. He hit a Falcon Arrow, then a top rope X-Factor, then went up top, but slipped, and landed in perfect position for Generico's Yakuza, which was followed up with a brainbuster for the win.

Joe's Judgment: Fun little match. Titus did quite well and while I never thought he was going to win, the match was competitive and enjoyable. Generico was awesome as always.

4. Roderick Strong defeated Davey Richards (w/ Shane Hagadorn, Sara Del Rey) in 16:10. After some tests of strength and counter wrestling, both men exchanged pin combos, resulting in Strong cinching in a surfboard variant. The two went to the floor, where Strong threw Richards into the barricades, and they brawled for a bit.

Back in the ring, and they exchanged strikes with Richards getting the better of it. The crowd really liked Richards. Strong dropkicked Davey off the top rope. They exchanged some more strikes. Lots of kicks from Davey. Strong tried the gutbuster, but it was blocked. Richards hit his handspring enzuigiri and grinned while the crowd cheered for him, but it wasn't a babyface-type grin, more of a sadistic-type one.

They continued to exchange strikes. Davey got a nearfall with a missile dropkick, and Strong got one with a rolling prawn hold. He tried a Tiger Suplex, but Davey countered into a crucifix for two.

In the center of the ring, they did the classic strike exchange, ending with Davey doing the Kawada step kicks. He locked in the Cloverleaf, but Strong made ropes. They went to the apron and Davey teased the DR Driver, but instead they traded big boots. Strong hit a uranage in the ring. Davey responded with a capture suplex. Both men traded big boots to the head. Davey got a rollup, but it was immediately followed with a gutbuster and Gibson Driver from Strong for the pin to close the show.

Joe's Judgment: Really, really good match. I could see these two going for about 45 minutes sometime, but this was really good for a match about a third of that length. Both were evenly matched, and both came off as big stars. Great match to close a good show.
