12/14 Mathieson's ROH on HDnet Live Coverage: Tyler Black vs. Sonjay Dutt and Delirious vs. Kenny King for spots in the Pick Six, plus Steve Corino and Erick Stevens in action
Dec 14, 2009 - 07:00 PM

Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDnet
Taped in Philadelphia, PA

The new intro that debuted last week was back. Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak welcomed us to the show and took us right down to our first match.

Joe's Judgment: For both of you following along live instead of watching Raw, thank you. Okay, maybe two is a bit too much. Still, if you're out there, thanks.

1. Delirious (w/ Daizee Haze) defeated Kenny King (w/ Rhett Titus) to earn a spot in the Pick Six and a $2500 match bonus. Delirious took control early. He worked over King with headlocks and armdrags, eventually knocking him to the floor. Back in the ring, Delirious maintained his advantage until King dodged a senton and then planted Delirious with a spinebuster.

King cinched in a front facelock and grinned at the crowd the whole time. He continued to beat on Delirious and grin at the crowd. King went for a suplex, but Delirious blocked and got a suplex of his own. Delirious hit a few forearms and dropped King to the apron, but King came back in with a blockbuster. He followed that up with his shotgun knees in the corner for a nearfall.

Delirious kicked out and hit a suplex, then the Panic Attack. He went for Shadows Over Hell, but King jumped up and kicked him. He rolled up Delirious with the aid of the tights, much to the anger of Hogewood. Delirious kicked out, then got a crucifix for the pin.

Joe's Judgment: Meh. Thoroughly forgettable, and while it was far from either man's worst effort to date, it wasn't the best way to follow up last week's great show. I'm still waiting for King to have the match that justifies the hype so many have placed on him. The crowd is really hot tonight, by the way.

A Steve Corino interview aired, interspersed with pictures of him with the ECW Championship. He's stopped dyeing his hair; it's now completely dark brown. He said that he was in ROH because they're on national TV and because he wants to win the ROH title...

Corino came out looking very middle-aged to face Lance Lude. Lude is the little guy with furry boots from The Set who was last seen on ROH TV getting squashed by Kevin Steen and El Generico. Corino wore jeans and a long sleeved white shirt.

Corino grabbed the mic and announced that he was forfeiting because Lude wasn't worthy of facing him.

2. Lance Lude defeated Steve Corino by forfeit. After the "match", Corino started to walk away, but then came back to the ring and destroyed Lude, finishing him off with a Sliding C Special. Corino left the mic next to Lude and left.

Joe's Judgment: Corino is still great on the mic. This was better than the squash that would have otherwise resulted, but given Corino's Japanese schedule, I don't see how he'll ever be able to amount to much in ROH this time around. For those who aren't aware, Corino wrestled in ROH on and off from 2002-2006, mostly feuding with Homicide.

Erick Stevens entered for match number three...

3. Erick Stevens defeated Remy Marcel in 1:45. Stevens has lost the mohawk and gained a permanently pissed off look. He basically threw Marcel around the ring and yelled, then finished him off with the Doctorbomb.

Joe's Judgment: I like Stevens, so hopefully ROH can figure out something to do with him. Nine months later and he's still doing exactly what he was doing when this show debuted.

Sonjay Dutt and Tyler Black entered for the main event...

4. Tyler Black defeated Sonjay Dutt to earn a spot in the Pick Six and a $2500 match bonus. Sonjay is debuting some nice new blue tights. The two exchanged strikes in the opening minutes. Sonjay got a short-lived edge, and then was thrown to ringside and beat up by Black.

Tyler continued to work over Sonjay. Every time Dutt got up, Tyler would knock him back down with a dropkick. The two went up top and Tyler attempted a superplex, but Sonjay blocked and then backdropped him into the ring.

Sonjay dropped out of the ring and slammed Black's head into the apron. He followed up with a legdrop, then brought the match back in the ring and worked over Black with very heelish offense, including hairpulling, grinding Tyler's head into the mat while working over his arm, poking his eyes, and other such heelish tactics.

Dutt got a nearfall with a pin combo, then held a bodyscissor for a fairly extended period of time. Tyler stood up, then senton'd Dutt, breaking free. He backdropped Sonjay to the floor, then flip dive'd onto him, then hit his flying lariat thing.

Sonjay regained control with a dropkick out of nowhere, then tried an Ace Crusher, which Black caught in a fireman's carry. Sonjay got out with an eye rake and hit a DDT, then a standing Shiranui (Sliced Bread #2) for a nearfall. Black hit the Paroxysm for a nearfall, but Sonjay kicked out and superkicked him. Black got up off the mat with a cartwheel kick, then powerbombed Sonjay in the corner. They exchanged strikes, then Black hit a superkick and finished off Sonjay with God's Last Gift for the pin and his spot in the Pick Six.

The announcers hyped next week's main event of Colt Cabana vs. Claudio Castagnoli to close the show...

Joe's Judgment: I saw this match on the listing and I groaned. Audibly. I was wrong to do so. Sonjay was awesome in his brief program with Delirious, and continued that awesomeness here. His heel mannerisms are great. Black did what he always does, but the hot crowd made it a bit better. The Pick Six continues to pique my interest. Tonight's show didn't look great on paper, but it was still a pretty good hour of wrestling. Somehow, I don't feel like I missed a whole lot on Raw.
