8/8 Mathieson's ROH on HDnet Live Coverage: El Generico vs. Davey Richards, Colt Cabana and Brent Albright vs. The Embassy, plus Nigel McGuinness and Tyler Black appear
Aug 8, 2009 - 07:00 PM

Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDnet
Taped in Philadelphia, PA

Usual opening video, usual Mike Hogewood/Dave Prazak intro which hyped El Generico vs. Davey Richards and the return of Mark Briscoe, and we go into our first match.

1. Claudio Castagnoli and Jimmy Rave (w/Prince Nana) defeated Colt Cabana and Brent Albright in 8:30. The Embassy jumped the faces before the bell, and dominated with offense on Albright before Cabana finally tagged in and hit a couple of moves, including the Flying "Apple".

Albright got the Crowbar on Claudio, but he got to the ropes. Claudio distracted the referee while Nana snuck in and hit Albright with a low blow, allowing Claudio to hit the Ricola Bomb for the pin. Post match, Claudio stomped Albright's head in with a steel chair, and Rave beat on Cabana until Necro Butcher and Grizzly Redwood made the save.

Joe's Judgment: Not a great match, but at least the Embassy finally beat somebody. A clean finish that made the Embassy look stronger would have been nice, considering that these are probably the two biggest stars in the faction and Cabana and Albright losing wouldn't make them any less over.

Kyle Durden was backstage with the American Wolves. Davey Richards couldn't decide if he was more pissed off or confused that the attention that should have been given to the Wolves was given to "Piano Teeth" Mark Briscoe's return. He said he had crippled both Mark and El Generico before, and he'd do it again. Eddie Edwards said that the hunt was on...

Nigel McGuinness hyped his match with Tyler Black next week, saying that he keeps hearing that Tyler Black is the next world champ, but if he keeps taking his eye off the ball, he's not going to be the next world champ...

Silas Young says that he does what he wants to who he wants, when he wants...

2. Delirious (w/ Daizee Haze) defeated Silas Young in 6:45. Delirious went crazy at the ring bell. Silas kept slapping on headscissors, and each time Delirious escaped and put on a headlock.

Silas went to ringside and grabbed Daizee Haze, which made both Delirious and Hogewood pretty mad. Delirious intervened, but Silas smashed him with a forearm. Silas continued on offense, and went for the headstand Arabian Press, but Delirious got his knees up, hit the Panic Attack, and then Shadows over Hell for the win even though Silas definitely kicked out between one and two.

Joe's Judgment: Forgettable, but Silas got a bit of offense in. More than I was expecting, although the right guy definitely went over.

[C]

Alex Payne made his entrance, followed by Jay Briscoe, who introduced his younger brother Mark.

3. Mark Briscoe defeated Alex "Sugarfoot" Payne in 4:15. Payne got a lot of offense in early, including a nice nearfall on a rollup, and held a variation of the Figure Four before Briscoe took over with a kick to the head, top rope Ace Crusher, and then got a powerbomb for the pin.

Joe's Judgment: Not a whole lot to say about the match, but I'm pumped for the return of the Briscoes. ROH's tag division just got a huge boost. As if it wasn't good enough already.

A Tyler Black interview aired. He said he could beat Nigel McGuinness, just not when the belt was on the line...

4. Davey Richards (w/ Eddie Edwards, Sara Del Rey) vs. El Generico (w/ Kevin Steen) ended in a no-contest in 10:00. Generico hit a Yakuza right after the belt rang, and followed it up with a Blue Thunder powerbomb for a nearfall. Generico beat up Davey around ringside, and Davey crawled back into the ring and asked for a timeout. Generico wasn't buying it, and Davey hit him in the knee brace.

Generico knocked Davey to ringside and then hit a flip dive on him. They went back in the ring, and Davey took control. He went for the Cloverleaf, but Generico got to the ropes before he could lock it in. He continued to work over Generico for the next several minutes.

Generico made a comeback with several clotheslines, then knocked Davey outside and teased a dive, but Davey moved. Generico slid instead, and then hit a tornado DDT after jumping between the first and second ropes. That is still a mark out moment, and I've seen it several times.

Back in the ring and Generico got a nearfall after a Michinoku Driver. He tried a Yakuza, but Richards caught it and turned it into a Dragon Screw. Richards and Generico exchanged kicks and slaps, with Davey getting the better of it. Generico came back with a suplex into the turnbuckles, and was about to hit the turnbuckle brainbuster when Edwards interfered, followed quickly by Steen.

A massive pull-apart brawl ensued, which included Sara Del Rey, Bobby Dempsey, Paul Turner, and pretty much everyone in the back. Del Rey mixed it up, punching Dempsey and another student in the face. The brawl went all over the arena, drawing massive "ECW" and "ROH" chants. Steen dumped a trash can on Edwards' head. When the brawl finally ended, Steen and Generico were inside the ring with a chair, and Hogewood said that the war was far from over to close the show.

Joe's Judgment: Great match and the brawl was a great different ending to the show. Really hot brawl that I'd say was better than the one on Impact. I could watch these two teams in any sort of singles or tag match about fifty more times before I got tired of it. Probably my feud of the year to date. Davey is just awesome in every possible way, and this was further evidence.

Pretty good show tonight. The main event was really good, Young-Delirious was decent, Mark Briscoe's return was newsworthy, and the Embassy won a match. Contact Joe Mathieson at jtmathieson88@gmail.com with any questions, comments, or concerns regarding this report.
