8/1 Mathieson's ROH on HDnet Coverage: Jay Briscoe vs. Roderick Strong vs. D-Lo Brown main event, Erick Stevens and Kenny Omega vs. Kenny King and Rhett Titus, plus Eddie Kingston in actio
Aug 1, 2009 - 10:33 PM

Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDnet
Taped in Philadelphia, PA

As always, we got the opening video, and Hogewood and Prazak introduction. Then we went down to the ring where Kyle Durden was preparing to interview Tyler Black. The interview never really got started though, because Austin Aries came out, and wanted to know why Tyler was getting an interview, and why Tyler thought he could beat Aries. Tyler said he was bigger and stronger, and the fans liked him. Yeah, because that helped him so much in Manhattan.

Nigel McGuinness came out to the bottom of the ramp. He mentioned that Tyler has had so many chances at the belt, but couldn't win the big one. He wondered if he ever would keep his eye on the ball. As Black turned back to Aries, Aries wiped him out with a sick belt shot.

Joe's Judgment: Good segment, and I love Nigel's new tweener character. And I love Aries' heel character. With him, you get the sense that this is actually how he acts in real life, like the actual Austin Aries is actually a dick like the character Austin Aries. Tyler... well, he still could use some work.

Hogewood hyped the main event and introduced a Roderick Strong video package...

1. Rhett Titus and Kenny King defeated Kenny Omega and Erick Stevens in 12:00. Omega took the advantage on King early, and continued it after a brief flurry of offense from Titus. The heels made a comeback after a brutal kick to the head from King to Omega, and then double-teamed him with various suplexes.

Omega finally tagged in Stevens, who went to work with a backdrop on Titus, but the heels quickly jumped right back on him, until Omega made his return. They got a nearfall after sandwiching Titus between two knee strikes, and Omega hit a nice moonsault on King to the floor. The faces continued to dominate the match, including an incredible double huracanrana by Omega, and Omega went for the Croyt's Wrath, but Titus pulled his leg out and King sort of fell on him for the pin.

Joe's Judgment: I like the odd couple teaming of Stevens and Omega, and I love King and Titus. This match, while it wasn't spectacular, was pretty good, and while I wasn't a fan of the finish, Omega really impressed me and made me want to see him challenge King and Titus' mentor, Austin Aries, for the world title, which is apparently what ROH is building to. I wish Stevens had been showcased a bit more though, because it seems like since his awesome feud with Roderick Strong, ROH has forgotten about him.

D-Lo Brown hyped the triple threat main event... [C]

Hogewood said that Jerry Lynn was at home with his family thinking about his future in the business...

Footage aired from the Kingston-Hero brawl last week...

2. Eddie Kingston defeated Orange Cassidy in 1:45. Kingston killed him with a Backfist to the Future after a backdrop driver. Post match, Kingston told Kyle Durden that he won't stop fighting Hero until Hero is out of the wrestling business.

Joe's Judgment: I love seeing Eddie Kingston squash people. And I wish they'd promote this feud more on their site and their DVD releases, because both guys are so awesome.

They recapped the show so far and announced the next two main events of Davey Richards vs. El Generico and Nigel McGuinness vs. Tyler Black...

Joe's Judgment: Davey vs. Generico should be awesome.

A Jay Briscoe video package aired...

Roderick Strong defeated D-Lo Brown and Jay Briscoe in a three-way match in 13:00. The match started off with the two faces working over D-Lo. They hit tandem shoulder blocks, and stomped him in the corner. Whenever either man would go for a cover, the other would break it up. D-Lo made a comeback and knocked Briscoe to the floor, then followed him. Strong hit a nice flip dive onto both men, then D-Lo and Jay brawled at ringside.

D-Lo got a nearfall after a leg lariat and lungblower, and worked over Strong in the ring. The pace then slowed as D-Lo worked on Roddy, but quickened as Jay returned, and hit a Death Valley Driver on D-Lo for a nearfall. Jay went up top, but Strong followed him and tried a superplex. D-Lo grabbed him and powerbombed him, and Roddy superplexed Jay at the same time. Nice.

The finish came when Strong tried a gutbuster, but Jay kicked him in the face. D-Lo threw him to the outside and tried the Sky High powerbomb on Strong, but Strong countered into a sunset flip for the pin.

Joe's Judgment: Really fun match that exceeded my expectations. D-Lo looked like he belonged. I've really come around on him, and his heel turn with him playing the "I'm too good for this" type of character has been good. I didn't believe in him at first, but he has made me a believer. Kudos to him. Roddy and Jay were what you'd expect from them: awesome.

I enjoyed tonight's show more than I thought I would. It wasn't a can't-miss show, but I was entertained for the entire hour and I can't wait for this show to move to Mondays where hopefully more people will watch. You can contact me at jtmathieson88@gmail.com.
