5/9 Twilling's ROH on HDNet Live Coverage: Bryan Danielson vs. Tyler Black to determine the number one contender for the ROH Title, Nigel McGuinness returns, former ROH star makes his first appearance on HDNet
May 9, 2009 - 08:00 PM |
ROH on HDNet
Taped in Philadelphia, Pa
[Q1] The opening video aired. Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak, in suits, welcomed us to the show. They put over tonight's main event of Bryan Danielson vs. Tyler Black. They sent it to the ring where Nigel McGuinness was waiting to cut a promo...
Nigel was met with chants of "Still our champ." He said he enjoyed hearing the chants, but they would not put the belt back around his waist. He said being the ROH Champion was like shagging a porn star. You are proud, other people are jealous, and you don't know how long you are going to last.
Nigel talked about his title reign and battling injuries. He said he was not able to wrestle one night and the fans turned on him. He pointed out one fan in particular who said, "F*ck you, when are you dropping the belt?" Nigel said as long as there was one wanker in the crowd, he would never lose the title.
He sort of put over the fans and was both babyface and heel in the promo. He called Jerry Lynn "Geritol Lynn" but put him over as the man that beat him clean and took the belt. He channeled Ric Flair and said "to be the man, wooo, you've got to beat the man." He said he would heel up and come back to earn his place in wrestling history. He was in it to win it...
Twill's Two Cents: Great promo. Nigel played a tweener role here and definitely had his backers in the audience. He put over Jerry Lynn but still put himself over as the man to beat in ROH. Very good opening segment.
Kyle Durden interviewed Tyler Black and Bryan Danielson backstage. Black said he had respect for Bryan, but the time limit draw proved to him that Bryan could not beat him. Danielson said he would beat Black tonight. Tyler said he respectfully disagreed and they agreed by shaking hands to settle it in the ring...
Twill's Two Cents: Simple, but very effective.
1. Daizee Haze and Delirious defeated MisChif and Jimmy Jacobs in 5:23. Delirious cut a Zombie like promo before the match. Although it should have been male vs. male and female vs. female, MisChif and Jacobs frequently double teamed Delirious.
[Q2] With Jacobs on the floor, Delirious hit a suicide dive. Haze hit the heart punch and Mind Trip on MisChif for the win...
Twill's Two Cents: Solid opener. I think Jacobs is being heavily misused but nonetheless, this was a decent way to start the in ring action this week.
They promoted a rematch for next week pitting Claudio Castagnoli vs. Brent Albright. They both cut a promo...
2. The American Wolves (Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards) defeated Orange Cassidy and Leslie Butterscotch in 3:58. Richards is back after touring Japan. Leslie Butterscotch may be the worse name in the history of professional wrestling. The Wolves dominated and looked impressive. They hit the superkick/German suplex combination for the win...
Kyle Durden jumped into to the ring to interview the Wolves. Richards cut a promo on Kevin Steen and El Generico. Edwards reminded us who they were and that they were gunning for the tag titles... [C]
Twill's Two Cents: The Wolves looked great here and a tag team title feud with Steen and Generico should produce some very good matches that I am looking forward to very much. Hogewood sounds silly calling the Wolves bullies.
Durden interviewed Ric Flair backstage. Flair put over Ring of Honor and when asked about tonight's main event, he said he didn't have a preference of who he wanted to win. He said only one man could climb the ladder. Durden and Flair both gave a "Wooooooo." ...
Twill's Two Cents: Two things; first of all, why wasn't Flair advertised for this show? Secondly, Flair obviously did not know who Danielson and Black were. That was a shame. They should have done a retape.
[Q3] Footage was shown from "earlier tonight" of Colt Cabana returning to ROH. Prince Nana came out to confront him with Ernie Osiris. Nana took off as Cabana knocked out Osiris...
3. Bryan Danielson vs. Tyler Black with the winner becoming the number one contender for the ROH Championship ended in a double countout in 21:25. Jerry Lynn was shown watching the match from the production truck.
Twill's Two Cents: Nicely done. I would have been very disappointed if Lynn was not shown watching this match.
The match started very slowly with Danielson working over Black's arm and Tyler not being able to counter. Tyler was finally able to use his quickness to gain a quick offensive advantage, but Bryan again was able to tie up Tyler by working on the leg. The match continued as if they were going to wrestle for an hour.
Danielson kept things methodical and on the mat while Black tried to use his quickness to separate himself and hit moves out of Irish whips. Bryan applied submission after submission and Tyler continued to struggle to get to the ropes. Bryan worked over the wrist, the ankle, and tried to apply a surfboard, but Tyler prevented it. Bryan countered by stomping down on the back of Tyler's knees.
With both men standing, Black and Danielson exchanged knife edge chops and European uppercuts respectively. Bryan applied a Greco Roman Knuckle Lock with Tyler on the mat and scored about five or six nearfalls in a row. With Black on the floor, Danielson tried a springboard move but Tyler slipped back into the ring. He then followed up with a somersault plancha.
[Q4] Back in the ring, Tyler hit a few high impact power moves. He hit a springboard lariat after an enziguiri for a two count. He followed with a standing shooting star press for another nearfall. Danielson countered a corner Irish whip and locked in one of my favorite moves, the rolling half crab. Tyler struggled to the ropes.
Throughout the match, Hogewood tried to convince Prazak just how great Tyler Black is as if that was his son out there. It was awkward as Prazak tried to call the match. Bryan hit a missile dropkick and followed up by beating Black down in the corner. Hogewood openly rooted for Black and Prazak countered by putting over Danielson.
Black tried a backslide and they rolled through with the sunset flip/pinfall exchange for about thirty seconds. Black hit a Pele kick. Danielson countered a powerbomb with the triangle choke. Black considered tapping out. He lifted Bryan up, but Bryan hit a head scissors and kept the hold applied. Tyler was able to get to the ropes once again.
Danielson tried the belly to back superplex, but Black countered with the Bucklebomb and superkick combo. Bryan got his foot on the rope before the referee could count to three. With Black on the top rope, Danielson pushed him into the crowd. Bryan followed with a springboard plancha. Both men tried to get back into the ring, but they both prevented each other from doing so and they were both counted out.
Twill's Two Cents: Awesome match. ROH diehard fans are used to matches like these but those who are new to ROH may not be. They started very slow, but told a story in doing so. Then they both absolutely laid everything out there and gave everything they had. Along with Austin Aries, there are a lot of people in line for Jerry Lynn's title.
The announcers wondered who would face Jerry Lynn next. The fans chanted "That was awesome" as Lynn looked on in awe from the truck. Footage was shown of Ric Flair and when he would appear next in ROH...
After a couple of commercials, another ROH commercial aired saying Flair would appear next week and tell Jerry Lynn who he would be facing in his next title defense...
Good show tonight. Feel free to send your show thoughts and/or comments to dotnetrich@gmail.com.
