5/17 Mathieson's ROH on HDnet Live Coverage: Roderick Strong vs. Kevin Steen, Kenny King and Rhett Titus vs. the House of Truth, plus Claudio Castagnoli in action, and the final eight minutes of Davey Richards vs. Eddie Edwards
May 17, 2010 - 07:00 PM

By Joe Mathieson

Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDNet
Taped in Philadelphia, Pa.

Highlights of Tyler Black beating Roderick Strong at Supercard of Honor V opened the show, accompanied Strong saying that in Charlotte, it took two guys to beat him, and in New York, it took three referees. The opening video aired and Mike Hogewood announced the main event as Strong vs. Kevin Steen.

1. Kenny King and Rhett Titus defeated The House of Truth (Josh Raymond and Christian Able) in 6:40. The HOT got the early edge, with a baseball slide dropkick from Raymond on Titus. Titus got a rollup, but the ref was distracted and Able powerbombed Raymond onto a kneeling Titus.

King and Titus got two with a Titus flipping neckbreaker over King's knees. Titus had Raymond up for a Razor's Edge, and King tried to hit the blockbuster, but Raymond dropkicked him to ringside off the top rope. Able knocked down Titus and Raymond hit a shooting star crossbody.

The HOT got two with their wheelbarrow lionsault knee drop. King made the save and got two with a Royal Flush into the turnbuckles. Raymond made the save and then hit an Alabama Slam on Titus, and Raymond hit a Skytwister to ringside on King. Able got two with a suplex. The HOT tried some sort of a double-team, but King crotched Raymond on the top rope, and then they hit their Razor's Edge/Blockbuster combo to win.

Joe's Judgment: Lots of moves. Lots of them looked great. Not a lot of psychology, not a lot of selling, but HOT looked very impressive. More please. By the way, both teams worked heel and the crowd didn't favor either one in particular.

Highlights of last week's Pick Six battle royal aired. Afterwards, Hogewood and Dave Prazak were in front of the green screen. Hog said that Aries didn't deserve to be in the Pick Six after what he did to Delirious. Prazak said that Aries was a former champ who deserved to be in the Pick Six. Hogewood introduced the same video as last week recapping the Aries/Delirious angle.

2. Claudio Castagnoli defeated Andy "Right Leg" Ridge. Ridge got a couple kicks with his famed right leg, but Claudio got him up for the UFO (which is still cool-looking) and got the pin.

Jim Cornette was backstage. He said that some in the wrestling media had called Davey Richards vs. Eddie Edwards "the best TV wrestling match you'll see all year". He said that if we missed the match the first time, we deserve to see it again, and if we saw it already, then we want to see it again, so we'll jump in and watch the final eight minutes right now.

The last eight minutes of Davey Richards vs. Eddie Edwards from the April 26th edition aired. See my recap from that date for a fuller review. Spoiler: it was a great match and well worth going out of your way to see. Easily the TV MOTY so far in my opinion.

Kyle Durden was backstage with Colt Cabana. Durden said that Cabana would challenge Eddie Edwards for the TV Title next week. Cabana said that when he lost to Edwards in the first round, it was because he let Steve Corino get into his head, and he thanked Jim Cornette for recognizing that. Colt said he was like the Man vs. Food of professional wrestling, and that next week, he'd be the "Champion of TV".

The same Supercard of Honor V highlights aired as from the top of the show. Roderick Strong was backstage with Kyle Durden and Jim Cornette. Strong called the NYC match a "mess", and said that everyone in ROH was lying to him. Cornette said that Strong was being paranoid and Austin Aries showed up.

Aries said that he and Strong came into ROH together. He said that when Strong leaned on him, they were tag champions. Aries said that with his help, Strong could move back up from #3 to #2 and reach the level of mediocrity he'd been striving for. Strong said that it was tempting, but he wanted to be number 1. Strong slapped Aries and they had a pull-apart brawl. [C]

Joe's Judgment: This segment was a bit hard to follow, but it got the idea across. Strong could be a good heel and his character is pretty interesting right now.

The Art of Wrestling for this week is the "Art of Beer-Chugging". Cabana had a beer that was taped up, for "legal reasons". All three "threw down" their money. Cabana threw down a one, and the Briscoes yelled at him. They started to race, and Cabana finished first and grabbed the money. Mark grabbed Cabana's can and said it was root beer. The Briscoes took all Cabana's money, and then beat him with his shoes. Yeah.

A quick recap of the Strong/Aries/Cornette segment aired...

3. Roderick Strong defeated Kevin Steen in 7:00. Austin Aries came out during Strong's entrance and beat him with a shoe. What is it with shoes tonight? Some students pulled Aries back, but he ran down, kicked Strong in the throat, and rammed him into the ringpost.

The crowd chanted "Olé" at Steen. Steen grabbed the mic and said that Paul Turner seemed to think Strong was hurt. Steen said that if there was anyone in the locker room that he respected besides Steve Corino, it was Strong. Steen offered Strong the opportunity to forfeit the match and live to fight another day for a world title shot. Turner asked Strong if he wanted to forfeit. Strong said he'd rather die than forfeit.

Steen beat on Strong and choked him in the ropes in the first couple moments. Strong went for a gutbuster at 1:30. Steen got the mic again and told Strong he was being stupid, and that the fans who want Strong to fight weren't thinking about the long-term repercussions. Steen offered Strong the opportunity to quit, but Strong spat in his face.

Steen continued to beat Strong around ringside. Strong got a couple chops, but Steen hit a Codebreaker and went for the cannonball. Strong ducked out of the way, but Steen shortly afterward hit a DDT and a Swanton for two. Steen grabbed the mic again and said Strong was starting to piss him off, and bad things happen when he gets angry. He asked Strong to give up, and Strong started singing the Olé song. Steen kicked Strong in the face, but Strong hit a powerbomb and rolled up Steen for the win.

Post match, Steen locked in a crossface and Strong tapped, even though the match was over. Tyler Black ran out to make the save and Steve Corino came out to talk to Steen. In the ring, Strong and Black exchanged heated words and Black walked away.

Joe's Judgment: For a seven minute match, that was pretty good I guess. It made Steen look like a monster heel, which is what it should have done, and Strong had the out that Aries attacked him pre-match. That said, it was only seven minutes and there was only about sixteen minutes of wrestling on tonight's show. I realize they're stretching about six weeks' worth of footage over ten weeks, but I'll be glad when it's over and we're back to great wrestling every week in the main event.
