5/10 Mathieson's ROH on HDnet Live Coverage: The Briscoes vs. the Dark City Fight Club in a #1 Contenders' Match, Pick 6 Contender Series battle royal, plus Prince Nana reveals the newest member of the Embassy
May 10, 2010 - 07:00 PM

by Joe Mathieson

Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDnet
Taped in Philadelphia, PA

Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak introduced the show. Hogewood talked about one of "the most despicable things" he'd ever seen, on last week's show. Footage of Austin Aries injuring Delirious' throat last week was shown.

Joe's Judgment: Nice production on the videos. Delirious still does nothing for me, but ROH is definitely trying to get this angle over. It'll be up to Aries to carry it on the mic because Delirious obviously can't.

Jim Cornette announced the next iPPV for June 19th from Toronto. The winner of tonight's match between the Briscoes and the Dark City Fight Club will challenge the Kings of Wrestling for the ROH World Tag Team Titles on that show.

Dave Prazak narrated highlights of the KOW vs. Briscoes match from The Big Bang...

1. Jay & Mark Briscoe defeated the Dark City Fight Club in 11:40. About two minutes in, after some brawling, Mark Briscoe hit a flip move of some sort off the guardrail onto one of the DCFC members on the floor.

The two teams brawled to the floor after the Briscoes controlled some brief in-ring action. Davis threw Mark Briscoe into the guardrails, and then both Davis and Chavis double-teamed Jay in the ring. They hit a press slam cutter, which honestly should be a finisher.

The DCFC continued to beat down Jay for the next couple minutes. Jay made the hot tag to Mark at 7:00. Mark hit a crossbody and then a second rope elbow on Chavis. Jay cleared Chavis, and Mark hit an exploder and then cleared Davis. Mark hit a moonsault from the top rope to ringside.

The match broke down and both teams kept hitting spots. Davis got two with a really bad-looking spear. Davis went for a powerbomb, but Mark broke free. DCFC went for Project Mayhem on Mark, but Jay speared Davis out of nowhere and Mark rolled up Chavis for the win.

Joe's Judgment: Not a bad match. Crowd was hot and cold, popping for the big spots. I've thought the Briscoes phoned it in on HDnet before, but tonight they did pretty well with what time they had.

Kyle Durden was backstage with Austin Aries. He asked if he was proud of what he did to Delirious. Aries said of course he was proud, and then moved on to tonight's battle royal. He said that he'd studied the greatest battle royal wrestlers of all time, and tonight, he'd "throw all nineteen other men over the top rope". Durden said there were only six people in the ring, and Aries said that it would be a piece of cake...

Videos of Prince Nana and Erick Stevens aired. Nana said that Necro wasn't an issue to him any more. Stevens said he knew how Necro used wrestling to feed his family, but he "couldn't care less if his kids went hungry." Nice. The Necro/Stevens parking lot brawl aired, followed by last week's Jim Cornette/Necro Butcher segment.

Nana came to the ring with Ernesto Osiris. He told a toothless woman in the crowd to shut up. Nana called the fans poor, said they had no money, unlike the newest member of the Embassy: Shawn Daivari. Daivari came out and said that he'd help the Embassy get rid of Necro Butcher, because all the Americans look up to him, and by taking out Necro he'd hurt all the "stinking Americans."

Joe's Judgment: Nana is greatness, always and forever. Daivari in the Embassy is okay I guess. I'll wait and see how it turns out.

Kyle Durden was backstage with Eddie Kingston. Kingston said that everybody wants to be the champ, and tonight, he'd get into the Pick Six, and after that he'd be coming for the title.

The Art of Wrestling with Colt Cabana aired. Tonight's segment is "The Art of Talking" with Bobby Cruise. Cabana said that he'd been talking since he was about three, but he wanted to hear how Cruise did it. Whenever Cruise started to say something, Cabana interrupted. Cruise finally walked away.

The Pick Six battle royal is next...[C]

Recaps of Eddie Edwards' road to the TV title were shown. Highlights from his matches with Colt Cabana, Kevin Steen, and Davey Richards were included, and then Richards putting the title on Edwards...

2. Austin Aries defeated Rhett Titus, Rasche Brown, Joey Ryan, Jerry Lynn and Eddie Kingston in a battle royal for the vacant #6 spot in the Pick Six. Prazak got a legit laugh out of me during Ryan's entrance when, in response to the "Who wants a mustache ride?" in Ryan's entrance music, he gleefully shouted "Everyone does!" Hogewood picked Lynn to win the match.

Everyone ducked away from Brown. Kingston tried to eliminate Ryan. Brown beat on Titus but did not eliminate him. Kingston and Ryan eliminated each other at 5:00. Kingston and Ryan brawled all the way to the back.

Brown Irish whipped Titus and Lynn tried to whip Aries into him, but Aries reversed it and sent Lynn into Titus. He bowed, but then turned around into Brown and ran away. Brown held Lynn up for a powerslam, and when Aries ran in, kicked him in the face, then connected with the powerslam.

Lynn hit a tornado DDT on Brown and tried to eliminate him with a headscissors. Aries and Titus ran over and eliminated Brown at 8:00. Titus and Aries tried to double-team Lynn unsuccessfully. Aries went through the ropes and tried to skin the cat, but Lynn knocked him to the floor. Titus went for Lynn, but Lynn eliminated him with a headscissors at 9:30. Lynn tried to climb back in but Titus held his leg, and Aries dropkicked Lynn to the floor to eliminate him and win the match at 9:45.

Hogewood talked about how Aries showed no remorse for his attack on Delirious last week, and that one day he'd get what's coming to him, and "I hope I'm there for it." The same Aries/Delirious video from earlier was shown again...

Joe's Judgment: The battle royal could have been better, but it served its purpose. ROH is really pushing the Aries/Delirious angle. The video was good, but did it really need to be shown twice? By the way, major props to ROH on making it seem like this show was recent when it was taped almost two months ago. More wrestling would be nice, but I do like that there's a lot going on and they are trying to fill the hour with different angles.
