5/3 Mathieson's ROH on HDnet Live Coverage: Austin Aries vs. Delirious, Roderick Strong vs. Joey Ryan, plus Necro Butcher and the Dark City Fight Club in action, and Tyler Black and Jim Cornette appear
May 3, 2010 - 07:00 PM

by Joe Mathieson

Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDnet
Taped in Philadelphia, PA

The show opened with a video hyping Tyler Black vs. Roderick Strong for this Saturday in NYC. Brief highlights of some of their interaction at The Big Bang were shown, interspersed with promos from each man...

Joey Ryan made his entrance with Prince Nana and Mr. Ernesto Osiris. Roderick Strong followed.

1. Roderick Strong defeated Joey Ryan (w/The Embassy) at 7:18. Strong's upper thigh was taped. Ryan controlled much of the early going. He went for a pin with his feet on the ropes at about 5:00. Ryan went for the Mustache Ride, but Strong chopped him a few times and went for a gutbuster. Ryan dropped down and went for a superkick, but Strong caught his legs and turned him into the Stronghold and Ryan tapped out.

Joe's Judgment: These two guys are capable of so much more, so this match was disappointing. ROH really needs to figure out what they're doing with the Embassy, because Ryan is too good to be wasted jobbing to Strong. And I'm not even sure how strong Strong looked here, taking offense from Ryan all match.

Highlights of Davey Richards vs. Eddie Edwards for the ROH TV title aired. An "exclusive" look at what happened after the match saw Edwards being interviewed by Kyle Durden in the ring. Edwards said that many people thought the match would be the end of the American Wolves, but they were wrong, because the hunt will never end.

2. The Dark City Fight Club defeated Caleb Konley and Pee Wee. DCFC dominated, with their legdrop backbreaker stuff, and got the win with a repeating powerbomb on Pee Wee into Project Mayhem. Hogewood mentioned that he'd like to see DCFC vs. the Briscoes. Yeah, we got that twice already, and it wasn't particularly great.

Kyle Durden interviewed DCFC in the ring. Chavis said that people said they were a second rate tag team, but "that didn't look like a second-rate tag team." They said they didn't care who the tag champs were, because they'd be the next ones. Chavis delivered the "and if you got a problem with that, do something about it." Davis speared Konley over the top rope, and then yelled "We dare ya."

Highlights of the Kings of Wrestling vs. the Briscoes from The Big Bang. The KOW cut a promo where they said that the Briscoes had to go all the way to the back after they lost the titles. The Briscoes came up to Jim Cornette and asked for a title shot. Cornette couldn't give it to them. [C]

Joe's Judgment: The KOW need to have a long reign. They have everything going for them: look, mic skills, in ring talent, literally everything. They can be the guys to carry ROH. Putting the belts on them was absolutely the right decision.

The Art of Wrestling with Colt Cabana aired. His guest was Sonjay Dutt, talking about the "Art of Swaggerism". Dutt told Cabana his "swagger was wack." He brought on Peter Rosenberg, who said they should give him a makeover. The camera cut and Cabana walked back on, wearing two shirts and one pant leg rolled up. Rosenberg told Cabana to say "the phrase I taught you". Cabana said something about "sluggish beats" and walked away. Dutt and Rosenberg cracked up.

Jim Cornette told Necro Butcher that if he could keep the fans and TV crew out of his matches, then all his matches would be under Butcher's Rules. Necro said they had a deal.

Austin Aries had an interview. He pointed out how he had his own camera, the "Digi Super 75 XS", and talked about how he was made for HDnet, unlike "some people... El Generico..." He said that he wasn't going to be like Tyler Black and Roderick Strong and get title shot after title shot. He said he'd reinvent himself, and he'd continue to be the reason we turned in every Monday night.

3. Necro Butcher defeated Robbie Wolf in 3:40. Necro threw a chair at the opening bell. He threw Wolf on the floor, ripped up the mats, and did the chair slam. The crowd suddenly was red hot. Wolf got thrown into the barricades a couple times, then brought into the ring. Necro hit a facebuster on a chair, and hit Wolf with the Section D sign. The crowd chanted "USA" for no apparent reason, and Necro hit a sideslam onto the backs of two upright chairs for the win.

Joe's Judgment: This isn't Abyss obsessing over Hall of Fame rings, but it's not far off. The crowd seems to love it though, so maybe I'm just missing something. Whatever. Necro hasn't done anything for me in a long time.

Tyler Black was backstage with Kyle Durden. Black said that he'd thought he was an excellent judge of character, but he didn't realize Strong would snap. He said that Strong was getting his shot on Saturday and he would be ready...

4. Delirious defeated Austin Aries by DQ in 9:25. Aries entered, and a graphic said that this was the "A Double Cam Shot With Digi Super 75 XS." Nice! Daizee Haze tripped up Aries about two minutes in. Delirious put Aries in camel clutch position and licked his hands, then rubbed them on Aries. Aries knocked Delirious to ringside, and Kenny King beat on him. Aries got him in the ring and covered for two.

Aries hit a knee to the gut and a bodyslam followed by a slingshot elbow for two. Aries beat down Delirious and grabbed at the mask. At 6:45, Delirious hit the Cobra suplex for two, then went for another one but Aries got out and hit his shinbreaker suplex after avoiding the Bizarro Driver. Aries went for a dropkick, but Delirious caught him with a boot.

Delirious hit the Panic Attack and went for Shadows Over Hell, but Aries stood up and sidestepped, then kicked Delirious in the throat. Todd Sinclair and Daizee Haze held off Aries as medics came out to check on Delirious. Hogewood used the serious voice to tell us that this was serious.

Suddenly, Aries decked Haze and set up Delirious with his throat on the guardrail. King held him in place as Aries hit a top rope elbow drop. Jerry Lynn ran down with a chair to make the save and Aries and King cleared out. Hogewood called the attack one of the most despicable things he'd ever seen to close the show.

Joe's Judgment: Weak match up until the injury angle, which looked legit. Aries looked like an asshole here, which was pretty good, but the angle didn't have a whole lot of heat. Overall tonight's show was a bit of a letdown after three awesome weeks in a row. No American Wolves can do that I guess.

As for Supercard of Honor V this Saturday, Strong vs. Black should feel like much more of a big deal than it does, and I don't believe the Motor City Machine Guns or Amazing (formerly Awesome) Kong have been mentioned on ROH TV yet either. The show should be good, I'm just a bit concerned that it hasn't been hyped enough. Granted, this was all taped before The Big Bang, so it couldn't do much to hype SCOH, but I don't believe any matches other than the world title match were even mentioned. Hopefully that's because this is a DVD show and it'll change for the next iPPV in Toronto on June 18th.
