2/22 Mathieson's ROH on HDnet Live Coverage: The Briscoes vs. the Young Bucks (aka Generation Me) for the ROH World Tag Team Titles, Rhett Titus vs. El Generico, and Colt Cabana in action
Feb 22, 2010 - 07:00 PM

Ring of Honor Wrestling on HDnet
Taped in Philadelphia, PA

Show starts with just a quick tease of the footage from the 8th Anniversary Show with Tyler Black beating Austin Aries for the ROH World Title. Mike Hogewood let us know that if we weren't in NYC on the 13th, we missed history. This was followed by the opening video, and Rhett Titus' entrance. Titus tried to give his room key to a girl at ringside, but was interrupted by a guy sitting next to her. Dave Prazak said something about Dave Lagana.

1. Rhett Titus defeated El Generico in 7:30. The crowd chanted "You have herpes" at Titus before the match. Titus overpowered Generico to start. Generico hit a flip dive, but his offense was short-lived, as Titus locked in a chinlock straight out of the Randy Orton playbook.

As Titus punched Generico in the face, Hogewood pointed out that it didn't look like Generico had his head in the game. Generico hit a kick, and after Titus kicked out, said something to ref Paul Turner. When he went back to Titus, Rhett got an inside cradle and pinned Generico for the three count. Rhett flashed a look of surprise, which quickly turned to a cocky grin.

Joe's Judgment: Well that was odd. Not a great match by any means, but Generico's head not being in it clearly came across. Titus' facial expressions at the end were great. He's getting really good in his character.

Kyle Durden was backstage with Colt Cabana. Colt said that he was worried about Generico, but was quickly cut off by Durden taking us out to the parking lot, where Necro Butcher told somebody to send Erick Stevens out.

2. Colt Cabana defeated Bobby Shields in 2:15. Colt did his normal schtick, hit his big spots, and won with the Billy Goat's Curse. After the match, Steve Corino came out and told him to watch who he stood up for.

Out in the parking lot, Necro was beating up Ernie Osiris. Erick Stevens jumped him from behind, and they brawled all over the place. They got into the building, and brawled down to the ring. Stevens threw a ref into the guardrail, and Necro punched the timekeeper. They brawled into the commercial break. [C]

Back from commercial, we saw what had happened during the break: Stevens hitting a powerslam on Necro onto a pile of chairs, and Eddie Kingston running him off.

Joe's Judgment: The brawl was kind of weak until the big spot. It's amazing how much my interest can be killed in two guys who I really like by placing them in a program with Necro Butcher. Stevens and Ryan should be in the tag title picture, not doing this. Kingston got that huge win over Hero at FB, just to be moved into this program that's going nowhere? Ugh.

Highlights played of Black vs. Aries at the 8th Anniversary Show...

Jim Cornette was backstage. He said that he had to sort out the situation with Necro punching the timekeeper, but he wanted to announce that he signed Black and Roderick Strong vs. Aries and Kenny King for next week.

3. The Briscoes defeated the Young Bucks in 16:00. The Briscoes were cautious in the early going, and the Bucks capitalized with their normal crisp offense. Prazak compared the Bucks to the Rock & Roll Express, and the Briscoes to the Road Warriors. Hogewood seemed to not know what he was talking about. Sigh.

The Briscoes controlled the match for several minutes, focusing mainly on Nick Jackson. When they knocked him to the apron, though, he slingshotted back in into an X-Factor. Matt tagged in and the Bucks ran through their signature spots.

At 14:00, Mark hit a top rope cutter on Nick, but Matt ran in and caught Mark in a powerbomb. Matt tagged in and the Bucks got a quick nearfall. They exchanged superkicks: first the Bucks, then the Briscoes. The Bucks were first to their feet and tried More Bang For Your Buck, but Mark got his knees up on the 450 splash, and knocked Matt off the top when he tried for the moonsault.

Mark tried the Cutthroat Driver off the top, but was stopped by Nick. Matt rolled up Jay for a two count. The Briscoes hit a crazy-looking double-team Razor's Edge/springboard cutter, but Matt kicked out just as Nick broke up the pin. The Briscoes tried a spike Jaydriller, but couldn't get it, then hit their version of the Doomsday Device for the three count.

After the match, the Briscoes raised the Bucks' hands, and Hogewood and Prazak talked about what they'd done in just a short time in ROH to close the show.

Joe's Judgment: That was the Bucks' last match on ROH TV, by the way. It was okay, I guess. It got a bit spotfesty, but the Razor's Edge spot was crazy. Matt took the bump really well, too. The Bucks will be missed, but TNA's got a great young team. The Briscoes didn't look like they were mailing it in like they have in the past, but it still seemed like they were just hitting their spots, not actually trying to have a great match.

Overall, tonight's show was hit and miss. It didn't put me to sleep, but it didn't make me jump out of my chair either. Everything was forgettable, and very little progress was made. I wish they'd made a bigger deal out of Titus beating Generico, because that's the sort of thing you should make a big deal about. Whatever. See you next week.

I'd like to thank Jason Powell for covering for me last week when I was out due to lack of internet. If you want to contact me, feel free to send an email to jtmathieson88@gmail.com.
