Kester's UFC 148 PPV Results and Review: Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen, Forrest Griffin vs. Tito Ortiz, Cung Le vs. Patrick Cote, Dong Hyun Kim vs. Demian Maia, Chad Mendes vs. Cody McKenzie, and Ivan Menjivar vs. Mike Easton

By Ryan Kester

UFC 148 Silva vs. Sonnen II
Aired live on PPV from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada

1. Ivan Menjivar (24-8) vs. Mike "The Hulk" Easton (12-1) [Bantamweight Division]

Round One: 10-9 Easton. Both men traded strikes the entire round, but Easton was the aggressor and controlled the octagon for the entire round.

Round Two: 10-9 Easton. Rinse and repeat. Slow fight thus far and the crowd is starting to get unruly. Both men continued to strike evenly but Easton is easily the aggressor and the one controlling where the fight goes.

Round Three: 10-9 Easton. Rise and repeat but Easton managed to clench the fight by getting Menjivar to the ground.

Official Decision: 30-27, 29-28, and 30-27 for the winner by unanimous decision, Mike Easton

Ryan's Reaction: Not the most exciting fight in existence. The two men were simply too evenly matched for one of them to really go off, so we got a lot of brief exchanges coupled with a whole lot of range finding.

2. Chad "Money" Mendes (11-1) vs. Cody McKenzie (13-2) [Lightweight Division]

Round One: Mendes caught a kick from McKenzie early, countered with a right hand to the gut, and McKenzie crumpled to the floor. Mendes dove on him and swung until the referee dragged him off.

Official Decision: Winner by TKO at 0:31 of the very first round, Chad Mendes.

Ryan's Reaction: That's more like it. The crowd needed something thrilling after that snoozer of an opener, and Mendes and McKenzie delivered. Both men were aggressive, but Mendes managed to land one hell of a right that lead to the quick finish.

3. Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" Kim (15-1-1, 1 NC) vs. Demian Maia (15-4) [Welterweight Division]

Round One: Demian Maia took Kim's back early, slammed him to the ground, got in a few shots, and the fight was over.

Official Decision: Winner by TKO at 0:45 of the very first round, Demian Maia.

Ryan's Reaction: That was an odd win. Maia sort of fell on top of Kim and just started to punch before standing and celebrating. The announcers were guessing that Kim broke a rib and if that's the case, bets wishes to him. Broken ribs are no joke and they hurt like mad. Good win for Maia.

4. Cung Le (7-2) vs. Patrick "The Predator" Cote (18-7) [Middleweight Division]

Round One: 10-9 Le. Le got an early takedown and managed to stay in control of the striking game. Cote was the aggressor for the majority of the round, but Le was able to avoid and counter most of what Cote threw at him.

Round Two: 10-9 Le. Another round of le backing up for the most part, but Le continued to land more strikes despite not being the aggressor. Cote threw a few more combos than the first, but he has yet to figure out a way to reliably get to Le.

Round Three: 10-9 Le. Rinse and repeat of the first two rounds. Le got another two takedowns to take the fight.

Official Decision: 30-27, 30-27, 30-27 for the winner by unanimous decision, Cung Le.

Ryan's Reaction: Good back and forth fight that managed to go the distance without being a bore. Le looked impressive and Cote just couldn't figure him out.

5.Forrest Griffin (18-7) vs. Tito "The People's Champ" Ortiz (17-10-1) [Light Heavyweight Division]

Round One: 10-9 Griffin. Ortiz scored a couple of takedowns but was unable to do much with them. The rest of the round was all Griffin, who scored with strike after kick after strike.

Round Two: 10-9 Griffin. Ortiz blasted griffin with a right that left him rocked for the first minute, but griffin came back and out struck Ortiz for the second straight round.

Round Three: 10-9 Ortiz. Ortiz blasted Griffin again and followed by getting on top. Ortiz held dominant position for the majority of the round but Griffin did manage to get out and land another series of combos.

Official Decision: 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 for the winner by unanimous decision, Forrest Griffin.

Ryan's Reaction: Good fight. Ortiz looked like he was going to take the fight off of a couple of counters, but for the most part Griffin simply out struck Ortiz.

6. Anderson "The Spider" Silva (29-4) vs. Chael Sonnen (28-11-1) for the UFC Middleweight Championship

Round One: 10-9 Sonnen. Sonnen had Silva on his back within five seconds. He stayed there the entire round, throwing everything from knees to elbows to shoulders. Sonnen slid into mount for the final minute but Silva defended to the close of the round.

Round Two: Sonnen charged in but Silva defended. Sonnen went for a wild shot and ended up on his ass, and Silva threw a knee to his face. The referee never called it, however, and Sonnen stood. Silva struck him back to the mat and rained punched on him until the referee called the fight.

Official Decision: Winner by TKO at 1:55 of the second round, Anderson Silva.

Ryan's Reaction: That was certainly an anticlimactic finish, but Silva showed that he is still the best fighter in the world. Silva was relentless the minute he had the advantage, and he walked away with the victory tonight. I simply had such high expectation for this fight that a TKO finish felt like a bit of a let down.

Overall Show: Good card. The opening wasn't anything to write home about, but the rest of the show delivered. Thanks for following along with me tonight.
