World Wrestling Insanity interview with Rory McAllister
Host: James Guttman
Interview available at WorldWrestlingInsanity.com via ClubWWI.
He's one half of the tag team that's bringing kilts back into style. It's a brand new 43 minute uncut ClubWWI.com shoot with the brawling Scotsman himself, "Highlander" Rory McAllister, and it's jammed full of stories fans have been wanting to know about.
Rory's career with WWE was tumultuous at times. Coming from a hardcore background, The Highlanders had always been compared to The Sheepherders. However, when WWE agents made that comparison, some didn't know who they were. When those in creative learned that the Herders were the original name of the Bushwhackers, that was it. The team went from brawling bad guys to kid-friendly fish-out-of-water. Rory talks on ClubWWI.com about difficulty adjusting to the gimmick, talking to Vince McMahon, Stephanie, and Triple H about it, why Paul Heyman didn't want to use them in OVW before the gimmick change, who Paul was focused on, changing his whole style, why gimmick changes don't affect many new stars, and more. But the gimmick itself was different than Rory had planned and he explains to James Guttman how it began to really affect him.
"To be perfectly honest with you, me and Robbie had been talking for months before (Robbie appearing on camera in TNA) about leaving WWE because we had had talks with the top brass about how we weren't happy with the situation. We felt we weren't being used right and they kept promising, 'Your time's coming. Your time's coming.' Right after SummerSlam, I told Robbie, I don't think I can deal with this shit anymore. I've got my son to worry about. I'm a family man. I don't think I can be upset and depressed at work and come home to be a good father. After that happened, I pretty much made up my mind I didn't want to be there anymore. Not pretty much, I made up my mind I was done."
The TNA controversy is a big one. On WrestleMania weekend, Rory's Highlander partner, Robbie, was shown clearly on camera during an Impact taping. The company went ballistic and Rory McAllister tells the entire story on ClubWWI.com including where he was when he learned Robbie had been shown on TV, dealing with an irate John Laurinaitis, Robbie's phone call to him that night, Robbie's public apology to the entire WWE locker room, why he respected Robbie more that night than he ever has before, how Undertaker got involved in the situation, and more. But the question still remains, why did Robbie go? Did he see it coming?
"After some digging and talking to some guys who are high up in TNA, it was a total set-up. Robbie had his son with him and we've got some friends who work in TNA. He wanted to go backstage. Somebody there told him it would be a good idea that he should sit away and definitely not be on camera. (They said) 'You definitely won't be on camera. You won't be spotted. Don't worry. You're safe.' And it wasn't long into the show, that idea was kind of botched and up pops Robbie."
Given their unhappiness with their WWE gimmicks, it wasn't surprising that Robbie went with it anyway. The Highlanders were on their way out and he figured it was worth the risk.
"Bottom line was that Robbie messed up. He told me afterwards that he knew he was going to be set-up, but he said he just didn't care."
This explosive shoot doesn't end there. Rory hits a ton of topics including being upset with the disrespectful end to The Spirit Squad, the night DX beat all WWE's tag teams at once, Knowing What Would Happen To The Highlanders In WWE, Heat Between WWE's Tag Teams, Not Having Any Animosity to WWE, returning to Europe, giving Ric Flair a kilt, hounding Tom Prichard for work, why he's a fan of Dave Batista, what Dave does great in the ring, Chris Candido, Waldo Von Erich, Johnny Jeter, Shane Helms, and more.
