Dot Net Water Cooler: Twilling and Shore discuss Vince McMahon's million dollar giveaway
May 27, 2008 - 03:57 PM

Dot Net TV reporters Rich Twilling and Chris Shore meet up at the water cooler and discuss the hot topics in professional wrestling.

Today's topic: Vince McMahon's announcement that he's giving away one million dollars.

Rich: So what do you think of Vince McMahon’s announcement? I don’t know how he could possibly be serious.

Chris: I never take Vince seriously. This is the guy who “died” in a fiery explosion. I know that’s storyline but he pulls ridiculous stunts all the time. This is probably a repeat of what WCW did.

Rich: I hope not. Why would anyone want to copy anything WCW did? He is desperate to increase ratings, but if he does not deliver on something huge here, he may just alienate people to the point of them not watching anymore.

Chris: You’re right, he will alienate people. But how can he possibly give away a million dollars every week. Even with USA backing him, he can’t leverage that kind of advertising revenue to make it up.

Rich: I would love it if he actually gave away his own money. He is wealthy, but he is not Bill Gates. He never put a time limit on it. If he is really doing this, it will probably be a one or two month thing.

Chris: Can you imagine the rating boost and mainstream media coverage if he really goes through with it?

Rich: I agree it could be huge. Even if the mainstream media mentioned it only to doubt its validity, at least it would pique curiosity. Any publicity is good publicity. Then, if he actually does it, a lot of people would be eating crow.

Chris: Of course it won’t help with PPV buy rates since most people will not become fans from turning in for a couple of weeks just to win money. That being said, I don’t know how this helps WWE for the long run. Sounds like more of a band-aid approach than a fix.

Rich: A band-aid approach seems too kind. To me, it is absolute desperation. However, sometimes absolute desperation is good business.

Chris: Sometimes. I guess we tune in next week to see.

Rich: Exactly. At this point, I think it would be a swerve if he actually did give away the money. The problem is the timing of the announcement. I don’t see how it will garner buys for One Night Stand on Sunday.

Check back tomorrow for another Water Cooler discussion. Remember both Chris and I welcome your email feedback. Rich Twilling can be reached at dotnetrich@gmail.com. Chris Shore can be reached at cshore10@triad.rr.com. Thank you for reading.
