Dot Net Water Cooler: Shore and Marv break down the WWE Draft

By Chris Shore and Marvin Hermanstyne
Chris Shore and Marvin Hermanstyne hang out around the DotNet water cooler and discuss the topics of the week. Today, they discuss the WWE Draft.
Shore: This Monday 's Raw brought us the annual WWE Draft. There were a ton of major moves, but almost all of them from Smackdown to Raw. We'll look at each of the picks, and breakdown where each show goes from here in a minute. But Marv, I want to start with your overall feelings about the draft.
Marv: This was the weakest draft ever in my opinion. It seems like there was no structure and it was booked on the fly. Eight picks was not enough and Smackdown suffered as a result. The first hour according to the ratings proved my point. We went forty minutes until the first pick and it was Kelly Kelly. Huh? And to think I almost did the two hour drive to attend this show. Thoughts?
Shore: Well, first hour ratings on these three hour specials are usually not as good as the traditional two hours, so I don't think those numbers are indicative of the draft. However, I will agree that the draft was very lackluster in that it became a Smackdown pity party as the show went on. Almost every major star moved off of Smackdown and onto Raw with little to no reciprocity. And the supplemental draft was even worse. Alright, let's look at each pick, you mentioned Kelly Kelly as the first pick. With Mickie James leaving, Smackdown "needed" another face Diva. Are you happy with the one we got?
Marv: Kelly Kelly gets points for being cute, but the number one overall pick? FAIL. Sure Smackdown needed another babyface Diva, but it doesn't help the cause within the Diva's division. Beth Phoenix is the top face and the irrelevant Tiffany is still there. If anything, this weakens the brand (Diva wise) because Beth and McCool are the only real workers. Everyone else is still green when it comes to wrestling. Sure you can give Layla credit for improving, but that's as far I will go. Big Show was number two overall, what are your thoughts about him?
Shore: Quickly on Kelly Kelly, Smackdown needed the new face Diva, and Kelly is the best you could hope for with Gail Kim supposedly taking time off. So I am good with that move. Show going to Smackdown is a win for the blue brand. With Mike Knox being released (speaking of fails), there is no one for Kane to really fight with, and no other big man for the regular guys to look good against. My only fear is that Show gets involved with the main event scene, and I just don't think he is world champion material. Don't get me wrong, I love the guy. But I think his time at the top has passed, and he needs to be working towards getting guys over, and enjoying the same last few years that Andre enjoyed. But we know he is very protective of his spot, so we'll see how it goes. You like Show coming over don't you?
Marv: I'm still throwing back beers about the Mike Knox firing. It baffles me how WWE releases such underrated talent by jobbing them out and destroying their character. But as far as Show, I like the move because he's a veteran that can still work and with being on Smackdown he has ZERO to worry about when it comes to his spot. Remaining on Raw would basically demote him to the mid-card which I know he doesn't want. I don't want to give any spoilers away, but Show will be in the world title picture quicker than we know it. But I don't expect him to be there long because there are opponents worthy for some good feuds and he could still be a main eventer without the belt being involved. The next pick broke your heart when John Morrison got kidnapped to Raw. Please vent, my friend...
Shore: This is really the worst pick of the draft. Yes, we all know I think Morrison is a star headed for the top. But that's not the reason why this pick was so bad. Once it was all over and the rosters were set, you can see that Smackdown is now a place for younger guys to make a name for themselves. He just had three good to great matches with Swagger. Swagger has no current opponent as Orton lost and stayed on Raw and Edge and Jericho moved as well. So why not let them feud over the title for a while? He would have been the best face on the brand, and I think he and Swagger could build each other up nicely. Instead, he's moved to Raw where he is at best the 5th face in a crowded group. I assume he will feud with Miz, which is great, but he could do so much more on Smackdown. At least he took his buddy R-Truth with him. What's up?
Marv: At least we don't have to endure his weak ass entrance on Friday nights. But I got mixed feelings on Morrison moving to Raw because if they push him, he could draw a crowd. With Triple H taking some time off, Morrison will probably take advantage of one of the top babyface spots. Not only a feud with the Miz would be great, but a white hot (no pun intended) Sheamus could be a nice feud in the future. The only damaging thing is John Cena when it comes to Morrison because Cena will steal all the kids' attention and he will be an afterthought. A Truth vs. DiBiase feud would be good to watch in the mid-card. The Rated-R superstar got moved to Raw and I'm still kicking myself for not putting him in my draft prediction article because of a certain Dot Net reader (you know who you are). Edge is coming back to spear the world on Raw...what are you thinking thus far?
Shore: Cena will always get in the way of people who are better than him. That's just the nature of the beast. And yes, I am happy to have the dancing fool on the Monday show. Edge presents an interesting situation. It appears he is going heel again after his attack on Orton Monday night, and that is a good thing because his face turn was awful. But is putting him with a soft face like Orton the best move? I'm guessing that this is the big Orton face build that will culminate in his moving to Smackdown in the fall, but I don't know if Edge is the right guy to use to build Orton as a face, much like Jericho wasn't the right guy to try and build Edge as a face. The waters here are very murky, and I don't see a good way to use him on Raw when you count in all the other moves that were made in the draft. But he hasn't been on Raw for a while, so that's a nice change I guess. Next was my favorite move to Smackdown, Kofi Kingston. After getting buried after his feud with Orton, do you see this as a new, new beginning for Kofi?
Marv: It really depends on how he is booked. The top heels on Smackdown are Swagger and C.M. Punk which isn't saying much, so they will need to rebuild the heels to make all these babyfaces mean something. Maybe we can get something we have all been waiting for.... like an MVP heel turn? Kingston should benefit from being on Smackdown because if he doesn't get a world title run or get involved in the world title picture, he will prove my point that he is nothing more than a mid-card act and he will be fed to Drew McIntyre every week. We finally got Captain Charisma to the blue brand, so can he finally become world champion in the WWE before the end of 2010?
Shore: So you're not a Kofi fan huh? I think the guy could be money if given the chance to get over on the mic. But he was pushed into that silly ass Jamaican gimmick, and then just when he breaks free of that and starts to look good against Orton, they bury him completely. So I think he will be a big player in the next few months on Smackdown. As far as Christian is concerned, and let the hate mail begin, I hate the guy. He is the male version of Michelle McCool in that he phones it in most of the time. His act is tired, and repetitive, and boring. I just don't care about him anymore. He is very over, and will probably add to Smackdown as a whole, but I want him away from the main event until he shows some real effort. But the pick is almost wasted because he should have had a program with Edge or the last guy drafted, Chris Jericho. Jericho moving to Raw is a disaster. He will be buried beyond belief, and he could be making stars on Smackdown. Does this one upset you as much as me?
Marv: As an advocate to push African American superstars, this stupid Jamaican gimmick killed all of Kofi's credibility. I was slowly starting to buy him when he was feuding with Orton, but I could give a damn about him now. He'll get his push on Smackdown, but I still don't want him as a world champion quite just yet. And Chris...are you turning into Dot Net's Vinnie Mac? I would never expect for you to hate Christian. Comparing him to Michelle McCool baffles me because he actually has talent and was always underrated. While I agree that some of his acts are boring, he is over with the crowd and could be the top face on the brand until Taker comes back from the dead. I want him in the main event picture immediately because the brand as a whole is decimated with upper mid-card talent and he has the most experience out of everyone. Having a Edge/Christian feud was not going to happen because Vince always screws us over and Christian/Jericho could still happen if they wanted to move Jericho back in the fall.
Jericho moving to Raw was the worst move of the draft because he will be fed to Cena. That will piss me and every Jericholic off weekly. Jericho could have stayed on Smackdown and brought some credibility to the roster but now he is an afterthought on an already loaded show. Moving on to the supplemental picks, the first pick is The Great Khali and Ranjin Singh...briefly spew some venom out about the Punjabi Playboy.
Shore: I thought he was going back to India. That's all I really have on him. Chavo Guerrero moving to Smackdown was next. I'm a little happy about this because Chavo can work, and he could be a huge help to the young guys who are trying to get established on Smackdown. Of course we will only see him on Superstars, but still. What do you think?
Marv: Until they split up this Simply Flawless faction with Vickie being involved, Chavo will be doing Superstars for a while. Cody Rhodes gets kicked in the dome at Mania and now he is on Smackdown, so what are your expectations for the former Legacy member?
Shore: To piss me off. Cody has zero character, and holds zero interest for most people. I'm sure he will have some impact on Smackdown because he will be shoved down our throats, but I could not care less about him. And as you pointed out, he gets kicked in the head straight to Smackdown. What a way to make an entrance. We'll wrap two picks up together with the entire Hart Dynasty moving to Raw. I have to say, this would upset me, but since they are the new tag champs, we can still expect to see them on Smackdown. That's good. What do you think about them moving, and about their winning the tag titles?
Marv: Good and bad to the Harts moving. The good is by being the unified tag champs, they can be on both brands so they could increase their exposure and we can possibly get Bret on Friday nights sometimes. Bad thing is, if Vince makes a TV appearance he will make them look weak or find a way to screw them out of the belts. As far as being the tag champs, I'm neutral on the title change because I really did like ShoMiz but the Harts won the belts out of nowhere after they were wrestling Cryme Tyme every week since 2007. Now after their hot win on Raw, they get the honor to face your buddies...The Dudebusters! Yes, Crock and Boretta will be taking over your main event on Superstars this week, it must really bring joy to your life. But anyway, Chris Masters comes to Smackdown...do his dancing pecs make a difference or will he dance his way to another pink slip? You know WWE has more releases coming soon...
Shore: I don't know about Masters. His face turn has been interesting, but he's not been seen in a while, and with Eve being the new Divas champ, she won't be with him. So I don't know where he will fit in at this point. I can't believe they moved him just to cut him though, so maybe there are plans for him. And I am purposefully ignoring the Dudebusters. Next up is big Ezekiel Jackson who is sidelined with a leg injury. Do you think we will see another feud with him and Kozlov?
Marv: No, No, NO! That would be one of the most cluster feuds of all time. But moving Zeke was a head scratching move considering that they had a vignette of him coming to Smackdown after his ECW title reign of one whopping day. He will be lost in the shuffle and will do Superstars duty when he gets back. Goldust back to Raw? Why?
Shore: To feud with Kozlov? Somebody has to. I have no idea. He would have been better served on Smackdown as a trainer type position. And that brings us to the BLOCKBUSTER trade announcement......Hornswoggle to Smackdown. Admit it; you're very excited about this aren't you?
Marv: Yeah...I'm just jumping for joy and eating Lucky Charms! Hell no...I hate this move. WWE is so damn desperate for comedy and you dump this midget on the blue brand? Makes no damn sense I tell ya. Zach Ryder lost his girlfriend to Smackdown...woo woo woo...Rosa Mendes for Women's Champion, and you know it! Fair or foul?
Shore: Foul. Very Foul. Super Foul. Intentional Foul. OK, I'm done. Rosa is a waste of time. She is neither pretty nor good in the ring. And that leaves us with the last pick, and the only other name besides Christian and Kofi moving to Smackdown...MVP. After being buried on Raw for a year, this has to be exciting for him. Do you want to see a face or heel MVP for this run?
Marv: I want that cocky, T.O. acting, Armani suit wearing star we grew to love when he debuted in WWE almost 4 years ago. I am buying the heel MVP with the balloon entrance. Being affiliated with the Kool-Aid man, Mark Henry, destroyed things and he was buried 30 feet deep on Raw. I see big things with his return to Smackdown and if they were smart, they should make him a main eventer right now. We all know he can talk and is decent in the ring so why not put some stock in this guy? His babyface run is just as atrocious as Edge's, if not worse. He is a natural heel and should remain that way because he could easily get heat like Punk if not more. Just go back and watch some of his old material...he was getting main event level heat and I always wondered why he never got pushed hard. The US title doesn't mean shit anymore so it's time to put him as heel world champion. What do you think?
Shore: On this we agree. Heel MVP is light years better than face MVP. I don't think his face run is as bad as Edge's was, but it was still bad. I think Smackdown is a little heel heavy, so I hate to see him turn like that. But my guess is the cast off rookies from NXT will mostly end up on Smackdown, so we will have new blood yet. I said in my blog this week that overall I thought this would do some good for WWE, though not how they expected. Ultimately, do you think this will create more stars, or just keep the status quo?
Marv: It will create new stars and make the Friday night show watchable, but will the hot stars get snatched back to Raw if they get so hot on Smackdown? The writing is better on the blue brand, but will we see some first time world champions? Hopefully the NXT trash will go to Raw except Barrett and Otunga if you ask me. Save the hate mail, but I would rather watch Captain Planet reruns on Boomerang than listen to Daniel Bryan cut a promo...
