Dot Net Water Cooler: Marv and Shore discuss WWE Smackdown's big move, silly NXT contests, the Hoff, Randy Orton and Jack Swagger, and more
Apr 16, 2010 - 05:04 PM

Chris Shore and Marvin Hermanstyne hang out around the DotNet water cooler and discuss the topics of the week. Today, they discuss Smackdown's network move, Monday Night Raw, NXT Weekly contest, and they make their draft predictions.

Shore: We are back again this week Marv after taking the week off with nothing to talk about, and we come back to a big week. We have a lot to get to, but let's start with Smackdown. It was announced earlier this week that Smackdown will be moving to SyFy on October 1. NXT will leave SyFy and be shopped around at the same time. What do you think about this?

Marv: Overall, a good move for the blue brand. It may kill the 1.9 percent of people who don't have cable, but hey...you can always blame Michael Tarver. But all joking aside, Smackdown really needed to be moved to a better network than MyNetworkTV because the show, most times, is underrated and better than Raw most weeks. As far as NXT I'm neutral at the moment, but starting to sour on the show because of the stupid ass challenges at the beginning of these shows.

Shore: Yeah, we'll get to NXT in a moment. What about not having a presence on network TV anymore? Do you think that will hurt WWE by going to full cable for both major shows?

Marv: If it was 20 years ago, I would have said yes. But in this generation of streaming TV and basic cable, WWE will benefit from this move. Especially if they get their own network. Wrestling fans will have to get cable to see that. Having wrestling on network TV is a thing of the past, and if they did move to a network channel, which one will it be? Fox is cheap and selling TV-PG would be shitty to their network because they still have the raunchy programming on the regular. NBC would have been a good choice, but for that to happen, they would've had to move to another night besides Friday. Friday is the death night for television because no one is at home. Smackdown should move back to Thursday nights and the ratings will spike in my opinion.

Shore: Yeah, I agree. If this had been a real network they were moving from, I would have called it devastating. But many people don't get MyNetworkTV, so I think it is an overall win. I'm still unsure why SyFy seems to be the favored network, but whatever works I guess. You mentioned the crappy rookie contest this week on NXT. Each person was given a topic and they were to speak extemporaneously for thirty seconds. I've already spoke some about this in my rankings article, so I'll give you first shot here.

Marv: This was an atrocious segment that went twenty freaking minutes! Man I had to chug these Miller Lite bottles and chat on the Forum just to maintain sannity. Besides Barrett, he was the person who was the best by a long shot and had the home crowd advantage, everyone else sucked. Otunga got good heel heat, but everyone else's promos were like watching squirrels eat nuts. I'm sorry, and save me the hate mail, but Daniel Bryan’s work on the stick sucks worse than a Hoover Vacuum. He looks so bush league and indie like it’s not funny anymore. He's clearly getting buried by WWE and I can't picture him as a world champion any time soon. Just imagine if Nigel came to WWE and what he would have had to endure.

Shore: Yeah, Nigel McGuiness looks like the smart one of the two for sure. I thought it was a stupid competition too. But they were given stupid topics. Rainbows? Who wants to hear these guys talk about rainbows? Or what's on the other side? I think it was rigged to some point. Not a direct work, but rigged nonetheless. But you mention Bryan. I think now that his answer was sabotaged by Striker on purpose, at the very least. The whole thing could have been scripted. It just seemed even stranger than the rest. Do you think that's a possibility or do you think he's just that bad?

Marv: Trust me, if you want me to rip Bryan I can do it like Michael Cole but actually tell the truth and not sound corny. I would think working with The Miz would improve his mic skills, but he's basically the same old boring guy. He's jobbing every week and this week he got squashed. Internet fans can complain away, but according to the way he is booked, he looks weak as hell. He just doesn't fit the WWE's mold on what they look for as a star. Otunga and Barrett is what WWE wants, two young heels that have the charisma to be stars in the future. Everyone else either sucks because of their gimmicks or they are small guys whose only chance at success will be on WWE Superstars and tag teaming with the jobber Evan Bourne...

Shore: I must be the only guy who likes Darren Young. I think those four, Young, Bryan, Otunga, and Barrett are the best of the group. I think Young looks very comfortable with the big boys. One thing is for sure, they need better contests than a keg run and a stupid slam poetry contest, agreed?

Marv: How about dumping these contests in general. There is nothing innovative about this shit. I have seen all this crap on VH1 on their reality shows. Why do I need to see these concepts on WWE TV?

Shore: Fair enough. I like the concept of NXT, even if it hasn't played out as well as it could have. Alright, let's get to the only other show that matters, Raw. There's a lot here to discuss, but as the other Smackdown guy here, do you find it annoying that Jack Swagger is defending the Smackdown title against a Raw wrestler in Randy Orton?

Marv: Not at all. It’s a fresh title match and Orton is 85 to 90 percent of the way to being a babyface star. Throwing a triple threat together would have been boring because it’s obvious that Swagger will retain. But having Orton in the match one on one with Swagger makes things interesting because if they wanted to put the title on Orton, he can easily move over to Smackdown via the draft and their feud can continue. Look for Swagger to retain and Orton gets moved to Smackdown anyway to freshen things up for Friday nights and beef up the show because of the network change. Edge and Jericho do not need the title in my opinion, and it’s a decent main event level feud.

Shore: But how many times will WWE shit all over Jericho? He is the best heel in the business right now. CM Punk might be hotter, but he doesn't have the deep cred like Jericho does. He is never booked as a legitimate champion, and they made the title belt look like a means to an end (Jericho vs. Edge) than the actual end! That belt has never looked weaker.

Marv: While I'll agree with your assessment, Jericho doesn't need the belt to be credible. The world title still has value compared to the WWE title which is still a piece of shit, and the creator has the belt at the current moment. WWE has the "on the fly" booking mentality for quite an while and it seems no one has long title runs beyond three months anymore unless your John Cena. Besides the Undisputed title run Jericho had, all his title runs have been forgettable at best since returning to the WWE. To be perfectly honest, when he became the IC champ some time ago, I knew his booking was going south from there. He's done so many jobs yet it doesn't kill his heat. Trust me, I have been a Jericho fan since his WCW days. Isn't his contract coming up soon?

Shore: I think so. There are rumors he wants to take time off for Fozzy, but I haven’t heard anything above general speculation. And I know Jericho doesn't need the title to be credible, but he deserves a long run as champion for all the things he has done over the years. I'll get off my soapbox now. What did you think about the Hoff and his appearance as guest host?

Marv: Shaking my damn head....that's my thoughts about the "Hoff". He's in my top 5 worst Raw guest hosts. He mocks the Rock, the Great One? Fail. He calls Otunga D-List? Fail, number #2. Then they have Baywatch type match with the Divas...Fail #3. Raw was a mediocre and forgettable show in my opinion. Eve Torres winning the Divas Title in two minutes does nothing and shows how bad women's wrestling is in the WWE. Otunga got fed to Cena which made me frown and Kofi Kingston getting buried by the Powder Puff Celtic Warrior, Sheamus, just makes me wander off to another world. Raw just makes my head hurt the bulk of the time and hopefully the Draft can really shake things up...

Shore: Raw is certainly stale right now. And that brings us to the draft. With the announcement that Smackdown is moving to SyFy, we can expect bigger changes than we would have a week ago. So who do you have moving around and why?

Marv: Randy Orton, to me, is going to Smackdown considering that he is wrestling for the world title and the feud with Swagger has the potential to be good. But you will have to wait until I have my Draft prediction article for everyone to view. I'll be working the NFL Draft next week, but I will still make time to have my Draft Predictions article ready to view. I am still trying to make arrangements to go to the Draft, so my predictions will remain quiet until next week...

Shore: The big Marv tease huh? I'm not writing a predictions article so I'll give you mine. I think Smackdown gets Orton, Kofi, Bourne, and possibly Miz. I think Raw gets Edge, Shad, Ziggler, and possibly Morrison. I think Miz and Morrison end up on the same show, but I'm not sure which way they will go. Any chance Cena goes to Smackdown?

Marv: If Cena goes to Smackdown, I may take a hiatus from WWE, or start writing for Raw or get purposely future endeavored from Dot Net. I love covering Smackdown, and I don't need Cena making Friday nights hell. But as far as your SD predictions, I agree. Raw, not so much. Ziggler will stay on SD and everyone else will possibly move but my mind can change when I put this article together.

Shore: Where does Tim Tebow goes in the NFL draft?

Marv: If we went undrafted, I would pop bottles and spend hella money in NYC...but he goes 2nd round, 3rd round at worst. I just don't see what people see him to be perfectly honest. Cool points to Jerry Jones for ripping Tebow, but his Cowgirls still suck...
