WWE King of the Ring tonight, early start for Raw, Dish Network HD note, Dot Net Podcast note, Lita
Apr 21, 2008 - 08:45 AM

-The road weary WWE crew returns to American soil for a show tonight following the European tour. Raw is live tonight from Greenville, S.C. Has Joey Styles started his gig at WWE.com yet? I ask because the live events page lists Raw twice with one starting time of 7:30 p.m. and another at 9:00 p.m. (ET).

Despite the WWE.com snafu, I can tell you that tonight's three-hour Raw kicks off at 7:00 p.m. (CT) and will feature the eight-man King of the Ring tournament. It's been announced as a one-night tournament, meaning the new King of the Ring will be crowned on tonight's show.

WWE has yet to announce the names of the participants in the tournament. In fact, they have yet to announce any matches for tonight's show. Yes, they are still teasing that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have been invited to "settle their differences in the ring." That being said, they've scaled back dramatically on that hype since they first announced the publicity stunt. I'll be covering the show live tonight so feel free to watch along with me.

-This will be the Raw crew's only show this week until the Backlash pay-per-view on Sunday. The Smackdown and ECW tapings will be held tomorrow night in Greensboro, N.C.

-Dish Network is finally carrying USA Network and Sci-Fi Network in Hi-Def.

-Poll Results: 60 percent of Dot Net readers are hopeful that WWE will use the King of the Ring tournament to elevate a mid-card performer. 28 percent of the voters would like to see WWE create a new star by showcasing an undercard performer or even a developmental wrestler. Only 13 percent want to see eight top wrestlers compete in a one-night tournament.

Poll Analysis: I don't disagree with the voters because I think WWE needs to create new stars, but I am surprised that there weren't more votes for an eight-man tournament involving eight top wrestlers. I don't think it will ever happen, but it would be fascinating to see how WWE booked a tournament with Triple H, Undertaker, John Cena, Randy Orton, Shawn Michaels, Batista, Chris Jericho, and Big Show. Of course, I would be totally against the idea of giving away such a tournament, as it should definitely be saved for pay-per-view.

-Dot Net reader Dave Wolf of Mapleton, Minn. sent in the following story: I was listening to the overnight show Saturday night/Sunday Morning on Fox Sports Radio, hosted by Chris Plank. From time to time, they bring up wrestling, mostly stars from the '80s. I didn't hear exactly how it started this week, but it seemed like every other caller would start his call by throwing out the names of a few wrestlers.  Some of the more interesting names that were mentinoned included the Von Erichs, George "The Animal" Steele, Barry Horowitz, Jim Brunzell, Rick Rude, Jimmy Snuka, Doink The Clown, Dink The Clown, Junkyard Dog, Stan Stasiak, Stan Hansen, Don Muraco, Greg Valentine, Dean Malenko, Tony Garea, King Curtis, and many others.

The host and the other members of the show commented frequently and laughed about how the show had been taken over by wrestling talk. Also, an email was read saying thank God that Ric Flair finally retired. He's like 60 years old, and it was signed by WWE.

-Amy "Lita" Dumas will be performing with her band The Luchagors in Myrtle Beach, SC on Saturday April 19th to raise money for the American Red Cross. The event will be held at Wimppy's 4711 S Kings Hwy Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29575. For more information, call 843-902-2877.
