8/7 Shore's TNA Impact Wrestling live coverage: Dixie Carter goes through a table, Abyss vs. Bram in a Monster's Ball match
2014-08-07 20:00:52

By Chris Shore

TNA Impact Wrestling on Spike TV
Taped In New York City.

[Q1] A parental guidance for strong imagery warning aired… Bully Ray, Devon, and Tommy Dreamer were shown in the Matthattan Center earlier in the day. Ray said tonight they were going to do what they do best, tear the house down. Devon said, "Testify." Dreamer said it was going to be a historic night… A video recapped Ray putting several people through tables and teased the Dixie spot for later. For some reason, the announce team didn't say anything about it…

Shore's Slant: This is my only real problem with giving away what happened with Dixie. The announce team has to act like they don't know what is going on and it creates a weird disconnect.

1. Abyss vs. Bram (w/Magnus) in a Monster's Ball match. The crowd chanted for blood and tables within the first two minutes. Mike Tenay and Taz checked in on commentary. Abyss took a couple of trashcan shots to the head. He came back with a cheese grater to the nuts of Bram. Abyss pulled out Janice to a big pop. Abyss stuck it in the turnbuckle, again. He pulled out the tacks and poured them in the ring. He tried to chokeslam Bram on them, but Bram kicked away.

Bram grabbed Janice, but Abyss chokeslammed him on the tacks. Magnus took Janice away from Abyss before he could use it. Bram recovered and speared Abyss into the barbed wire board. He got Janice back and hit Abyss with it for the win…

Bram defeated Abyss at 8:08.

Post-match, Bram left with Janice… The announce team hyped Sanada vs. Samoa Joe vs. Low Ki to crown a new X Division Champion. Backstage, Joe started to put himself over in the X Division. Low Ki walked up and said they have had their share of wars in the past, but now Joe stood in his way. Joe said the next time Ki heard Joe's name it would be when he was crowned as new champion…

Shore's Slant: OK Monster's Ball match, but the Janice stuff just pushes me over the limit of suspension of disbelief and ruins it for me. Plus, Abyss has been so ho-hum for so long it's hard to get into any storyline that involves him.

[Q2][C] Backstage, Jeremy Borash tried to talk to Ethan Carter but EC3 took over and put over Rycklon, Snitsky, and Rhino as the most hardcore group ever. He said his Aunt D would never, never, never, etc. go through a table…

MVP, Lashley, Kenny King, and four women came to the ring. MVP said when he was in charge all the wrestlers whined about they wanted and it was too much of a headache. He said as long as they controlled the title, they had all of the power and none of the headache.

A "boring" chant broke out as MVP ran through the people Lashley had beaten. He said there was no one else left to beat. Bobby Roode's music hit and he came out with a mic. He cut a promo while climbing into the ring about MVP being right about how dominant Lashley has been. Roode said he was the longest reigning champion of all time and the reason why MVP sent him home was to prevent Roode from stopping MVP being champion.

Roode tried to play MVP vs. Lashley and said MVP planned for himself to be champion but he blew out his knee. MVP told him to stop trying to stir the pot. Roode told him to shut up. He said Lashley hadn't beat him yet and challenged Lashley to a match. King and MVP attacked Roode and beat him down until Eric Young and Austin Aries ran out for the save. MVP took a mic and told them to play with themselves because he and his crew were going to party…

Backstage, Gunner talked with Sam Shaw about their six-man match with Mr. Anderson. Anderson walked up and chased Shaw off. He told Gunner he didn't trust Shaw. Gunner said he trusted Shaw and Anderson and asked Anderson if he trusted him before walking off…

Shore's Slant: Still too many talking segment built around the main event. This didn't move the needle for me. It wasn't bad, but I can't say it hooked me either.

IQG asked Ray who their partner was and Ray blew him off. He said they had a guy who had always had their back. Dreamer said he couldn't believe Ray got him out of retirement. Devon said he couldn’t believe Ray got him on his birthday…

Bor-Mans made their entrance. Anderson did ring introductions for all three men on his team. He introduced "Gunner, this guy here," and himself…

2. Bro-Mans and DJ Z vs. Gunner, Sam Shaw, and Mr. Anderson. Gunner took the heat and went for a tag. Anderson shoved Shaw away and tagged Gunner. The match broke down and Shaw got in the ring. He took out all three men and looked at Anderson. Anderson got in his face and Robbie rolled Anderson up. Shaw went for the save, but Jesse grabbed his leg to prevent Shaw from helping…

Bro-Mans and DJ Z defeated Gunner, Sam Shaw, and Anderson at 4:42.

Post-match, Anderson went after Shaw until Gunner pulled him off… Backstage, Dixie talked up King Mo as her bodyguard and said tonight they would see the end of Bully Ray…

Shore's Slant: I like the story they are telling with Anderson and Shaw. Gunner seems to be the odd man out, and I fear it leads to yet another Anderson heel turn, but I like it on the whole so far.

[Q4][C] Backstage, Anderson and Gunner argued and almost fought. Shaw ran up and broke them up. He said Ken was right and took the blame. Anderson stormed off yelling, "Ken is right." Gunner punched the wall…

3. Ethan Carter III, Rycklon, Snitsky, and Rhino vs. Bully Ray, Devon, Tommy Dreamer, and Al Snow in an eight-man extreme, hardcore, weapons war match. I think I have the match right. The rules are like War Games without the cage. EC3 and Dreamer started. Dixie Carter, King Mo, and security were shown in the balcony. Dreamer beat down EC3 and played to Dixie.

Rhino was the next guy out and he dropped Dreamer with a trashcan lid shot. EC3 recovered and they beat on Dreamer with a kendo stick. Devon was out next and cleared house with a trashcan…[C]

Back from commercial, Snitsky had joined his team and they were in control. Ray made his entrance and flattened a trashcan on all three men.

[Q5] EC3 bled from the forehead so much Ray looked like he was bleeding after interacting with him. Rycklon made his entrance and took out everyone with power. EC3 choked Ray out with his own chain as Christy Hemme counted down. Al Snow was the final man. He came to the ring and gave everyone head.

Everyone took everyone else out with Dreamer standing tall. Spud ran in and hit Dreamer with a kendo stick. Dreamer no sold it and the babyfaces surrounded Spud. They dropped Spud and held his legs open for Snow to give him top rope head. Snow hit a moonsault to the floor on Snitsky and Rycklon. Rhino took 3D in the ring and Devon covered for the win…

Team Bully Ray defeated Team EC3 at 17:30.

Pot-match, Ray took and mic and looked for Dixie. He saw her and said she was surrounded by a bunch of crazy New York City people. He said all of Dixie's hired guns were on the run because they got their asses beat down. He said the clock was running out because he was putting her through a table tonight. She had a mic and said that wouldn’t happen but King Mo was going to knock Ray out…

Backstage, the Beautiful People whined about Taryn Terrell and Angelina said it was time she got her one-on-one rematch…[C]

Shore's Slant: The gimmick for the match was totally unnecessary and ultimately meaningless except for a few random weapon spots. They could have told the same story with fewer machinations. Still, the crowd was super hot for it. I once again point to the "It's happens" video replaying during the show. I don’t mind it as hype before the show, but making it part of the show makes the promise from Bully Ray seem weird. It's a little thing, but a noticeable one.

[Q6] A video recapped what just happened. Backstage, IQG asked a no longer bloody EC3 what happened and he said the men failed him and Dixie in their loss. He said they still had to protect Dixie and if they fail again they have the secret weapon in King Mo… A Bound for Glory video aired…

The Beautiful People made their entrance with no fanfare. Angelina said everyone is crazy about Taryn Terrell and Gail Kim but the Beautiful People were better. She said she deserved her rematch and she wanted it now. Taryn Terrell made her ring entrance. Angelina complained about Taryn stealing her time. Taryn said Angelina stole her chance at the Knockouts title and prove who was best.

Angelina said she could help Taryn with who was better. She said she was the best and hottest Knockout there is. She told Taryn to go home and tell her baby mommy is second best, or third or fourth. Gail Kim came out and said she talked to Kurt Angle and he told her she could pick her opponent. She picked Angelina and Taryn. She tried to play Angelina's words about being the best against Velvet and then said Velvet was in the match too. The Beautiful People attacked, but Velvet hit Angelina by mistake and they were dumped to the floor…

Backstage, James Storm slapped Sanada and told him he was going to win for Storm because Storm showed him the light. He made Sanada bow and told him to win, or else…[C]

Shore's Slant: So Gail Kim is so stupid she picks a match that puts her at a statistical disadvantage to retain the title? I don't think Kim is stupid but that decision sure does try and paint her like she is. And no, it isn't brave. It's dumb. And I don’t think that crowd gave two shits about what the women were saying. They sure didn't act like they were responding to more than the outfits.

A video said someone was coming. They gave away two of the five letters: H---K. They guy is wearing a mask so I'm going to go with Havok… A video hyped next week's show with Team 3D vs. The Hardy Boyz… Backstage, Ray stood in a blue light for some reason and called his match "hardcore heaven." He said he was going to knock King Mo's punk ass out and put Dixie through a table tonight…

[Q7] Storm made his entrance to the ramp and introduced "The man who ended Great Muta's career." Sanada made his entrance. Storm physically forced Sanada to bow and then Sanada did on his own. This makes no sense. Low Ki was out next. Joe was last…[C]

4. Sanada vs. Low Ki vs. Samoa Joe for the vacant X Division Championship. The bell rang as soon as the show came back from commercial. Sanada hit a dropkick on both his opponents. Low Ki went to the floor and Joe went on the attack. Low Ki came back in the ring and Joe threw him over the top rope. Low Ki grabbed his ankle, but he recovered quickly and hit a dropkick through the ropes on Sanada. Joe dove on them both on the floor, but almost landed short.

Joe and Low Ki faced off. They hit stiff shots on each other. Joe went for the muscle buster, but Low Ki reversed into a dragon sleeper. Sanada came in and broke it up. Low Ki hit a double stomp on him and went for Joe. Joe locked in a cross arm breaker. Sanada hit a moonsault to break the hold and hooked an O'Conner roll on Joe. Joe kicked out into a rear naked choke and Sanada tapped before Low Ki could stop him…

Samoa Joe won the X Division Championship at 6:48.

[Q8] Backstage, King Mo was shadow boxing. Dixie told him to "take him out." Mo said he was done and they walked off together…[C]

Shore's Slant: An OK match. The crowd was into everything Joe did, and they liked Low Ki, but they didn't seem to care about Sanada. And it's not like they have given us a real reason to care for him. His actions don't make any sense. Still, Joe as X Division Champion will give them a chance to grow the division again should they wish to do so.

A video recapped the almost moments with Ray and Dixie, including his promise from tonight. Dixie and company made their ring entrance. Taz asked the obvious question: why would Dixie come out here like this. He said she believed in her support and hated Bully Ray. Uh…OK. The fans booed her and she said right back at them. She ran down all of the guys in the ring and fired Snitsky and Rycklon. They left and she screamed for everyone to get out of her building. She even told one person to get their "shit" and leave. They bleeped the word.

Ray, Devon, and Dreamer came to the ring with a table. Ray and Devon put a table in the ring while everyone just watched. Ray, Devon, and Dreamer climbed in the ring and stared off with Mo, Rhino, Spud, EC3 and Dixie. Ray said he had promised the people for a long time he would put her through a table. Dreamer said he told her before and he was telling her again, she had to go through the table because she represented everything wrong in wrestling.

Mo knocked Dreamer out and Ray attacked Mo. Devon cleared Rhino, Carter, and Spud somehow. They setup the table and setup for 3D. Dixie rolled to the floor and tried to escape with Spud. The babyface locker room cleared out and backed Dixie down to the ring. Dreamer rolled her in the ring. Devon picked her up for Ray. Ray drove her through the table and sat there in post-orgasmic bliss as the place came unglued. Dixie sold it as Ray recovered and he and Dreamer and Devon celebrated with the babyfaces…

Shore's Slant: Well, they got the moment they wanted, and the crowd reaction they wanted. I am still fine with them giving away that this happened, but I also admit it left the moment with little suspense. It was also wildly over the top with the locker room clearing out, but the crowd made up for all the mistakes. They went absolutely insane and closed the show on a hot moment. I'll have more tomorrow in the TNA Impact Wrestling audio review. Thanks for watching along tonight.
